What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"The care and attention my dad receives are fabulous. His recovery from a fall last year and mobility have been improved with the care and encouragement he receives from all the staff. His nutrition has been much better since living at Hilderstone Hall, and His preferences are accommodated. He has company from other residents and has participated in activities he wouldn't have been able to access otherwise. He has a better quality of life and is treated with care and respect. I can't express enough the reassurance I feel with my dad being cared for at Hilderstone Hall."

"I was very impressed with the whole experience of having someone I loved being in care. The staff were excellent and the rooms were always clean and pleasant. The activities were of good interest and varied. One of the staff helping with activities formed a good relationship with my friend and always listened to her. I would have no hesitation recommending Barchester Hilderstone Hall and my experience was a comfort for someone I loved."

"Very warm and welcoming on entry, made you feel at home straight away. All staff and management are very pleasant and obliging. The food is excellent. Just what was required for my wife after a long stay in the hospital. Remded me of the Victorian Holels in LLandudno."

"Hilderstone have been brilliant, they managed to get both of my parents into a room together on the day they were both been discharged from hospital. My parents spent 4 weeks together, when my father became very poorly, the home provided my mum with transport to see my father and offered to let him come back for his final few days, but unfortunately he was too poorly to travel, so they helped Mum to visit and when my father passed away we had the funeral go from the hall. The staff were amazing, they helped to console my mum and to be fair a lot of the family too. I really don’t know how we would have coped without them. For us, a lot of things happened very quickly and totally unexpected, but they were completely amazing and continue to be."

"Every time we visit our friend, the staff are always pleasant and friendly, and can’t do enough for you. Our friend has settled in well. Hilderstone Hall is always clean, our friend's clothes are always clean and ironed, and tea/coffee and homemade cake are always on hand for visitors to us - cakes are very yummy. Many activities during the week, and always welcome to join in with them. Staff keeps us up to date on what’s going on."

"Beautiful location. Happy to see some refurbishing taking place. Overall, a pleasant and helpful care home. However, weekend staffing is very minimal and lacking attendance. Often lack of communication and details left unattended to. Staff generally excellent."

"My mum has been a resident at Hilderstone Hall since March 2023 and the care and attention she receives has been amazing. The carers and senior carer are absolutely wonderful and nothing is ever too much trouble for them plus they are genuinely loving towards the residents which is so comforting to see. The entertainment lady is the most amazing person and puts a smile on all the residents faces and ours! She's truly the type of person you would want to entertain your loved ones, she's absolutely brilliant! The manager is also wonderful and so helpful and understanding of aspects of care. Beautiful place and currently undergoing a refurb to make it even more stunning. If I could I would move in here myself. Perhaps the only negative I could give is the extremely high cost for the stay here, think it would be helpful if it were on a scale of how much care each individual needs as Mum is completely mobile, can shower, dress and feed herself and only needs someone to give her tablets."

"Care, comfort and cleanliness - respecting the very long lifetime experience, contribution to society and personal dignity of my father-in-law - are of paramount importance to him and his family. These three things embrace every aspect of what is on offer at Hilderstone Hall in our opinion. Although he may not say much himself now, we know that he is very appreciative of the attention and care that he receives and this, in itself, significantly informs our own views. In the twilight of his life, we are confident that he is welcome and loved here and our thanks to all the staff and fellow residents who make up this lovely community area are fulsome and heartfelt."

"The staff and nursing care are outstanding. It is very comforting to see my dad very happy and contented. Following a fall in his own house, he spent 7 months in the hospital with little or no mental or physical stimulation resulting in a big decline mentally and physically. Since being a resident at Hilderstone Hall it is lovely to see 'the old Dad back'. It is thanks to all the staff for going above and beyond, treating Dad with care, dignity and respect and returning his personality."

"Getting my uncle in the home from the hospital couldn't have been more simple. The manager organised everything perfectly. All staff couldn't be more helpful. The only negative was that there was no gluten-free food there on the day he went in. I went out myself to buy gluten-free bread for his first tea in the home."

"I am so impressed by the high quality of care provided by all the staff at Barchester Hilderstone Hall Care Home. Everyone who we met showed so much love, care and concern for residents and visitors alike. The engagement with all the residents is top-notch. You can see on the faces of the residents how comfortable and relaxed they are whenever the staff speak or deal with them. I can see why they enjoy their lives here. Well done, everyone. My father-in-law only stayed a short time but I was thrilled with the care he received."

"The staff at Hilderstone Hall are friendly and caring. I have some experience with care homes based on family and friends and this care home is on a different level allowing patients a good level of freedom whilst providing a caring and safe environment. All the staff I have met have been professional data all times and really seem to care about the residents. This place should be filed as a benchmark for all others to aspire to."

"It's been 3 years since my wife came to Hilderstone Hall. She was immediately shown love and support- the care given was safe and secure with the result that she could quickly feel at home. That was perfect for her. For me, having been caring for her 24/7 for ten years, it was the hardest decision I had ever needed to make. To have proof that I had made the right decision was an enormous relief. Without exception, we are all human and therefore, mistakes happen. The measure of an excellent management team is how honestly and effectively such incidents are handled. In my experience this management team is exceptional."

"I visited Barchester Hilderstone Hall Care Home for three consecutive days and experienced friendliness to all visitors and residents. Whatever the request, pets welcomed, self-help and refreshments are offered to visitors. I was particularly impressed with the alarm mats by the bed. The grounds and home are lovely, well kept and maintained. Inside reception has several alone lounges where visitors can relax. There were always staff in sight to ensure all were comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble. My sister's room was large with an ensuite and plenty of room for clothes. Lots of artwork and sculptures were displayed, giving the feeling of a gracious home. Overall, a pleasant experience and I am happy my sister is in such a welcoming and professional home."

"I feel like since my gran was moved upstairs that the care had gone downhill a bit. But on my last visit, she was doing really well again which I believe is mostly thanks to the new entertainment staff (especially the one-to-one entertainment being done in the residents' rooms if they are unable to get them to leave their room that day)."

"The team at Hilderstone Hall care home are simply outstanding! They go above and beyond to care for our mum who has dementia but has always been fiercely independent and has a lovely sense of humour and loved the outdoors, particularly running. She ran the Great North run when she was 70! They encourage her to remain as independent as possible, there is always a laugh and a cheeky giggle which mum loves. The team take the time to take her out walking/running in the beautiful gardens. She likes her own space but is always gently encouraged to engage in the multiple activities they offer. The whole team genuinely seem to understand her individual unique needs and does their utmost to see that these are fulfilled. Our particular thanks go to the Hostess and the Senior Carer. The hostess has been our rock with her care, compassion and sense of humour with mum. She genuinely gives 110%. The senior Carer keeps us updated on a regular basis regarding all of Mum's care needs. This is so appreciated. They are both absolute gems!"

"We were very fortunate that there was a room available when we needed one, as a matter of urgency, for my sister. "My mum has been at Hilderstone for 21-months. Staff are amazing, kind, caring, respectful and always treat Mum with dignity. I feel that the staff genuinely love my mum, and I’m so very grateful for their care. The food is fantastic, and Mum enjoys a glass of wine with lunch. Activities such as singers, bingo and quizzes are regular, but it will be nice to see day trips out start up again. Over the last 21-months throughout Covid, Hilderstone staff have managed well, keeping residents safe following all protocols and keeping infections here to a minimum, but supporting relatives to keep in touch via window visits, pod visits, Skype and telephone calls - a little better communication regards the protocol changes throughout the time would, however, have been useful. A huge thanks to all the staff from me and my mum."

"My mum needed respite care after a hospital admission. The staff at Hilderstone Hall were all lovely and made her feel at home. Everyone is smiling and friendly. The weekly bingo and visiting singers, in particular, were a big hit with Mum, along with bird feeders outside her window. It was a huge relief to us all to know that Mum was being looked after so well and in a beautiful setting. Thanks to all the team."

"Difficult to tick 1 box with confidence owing to inconsistency. I am happy overall with the food and welcome alternatives if necessary but rather disappointing when other staff have to step in. Need additional activities coordinator to ensure 7 days per week are covered. Still lacking sufficient exercises for all residents and mine on a 1 to 1 daily basis. Frequently not ready early enough on a daily basis as stipulated in my care plan. Staff need to be supplemented by agency staff, some of whom lack training and manhandling. use appropriate behaviour, communication or what their remit entails. More established staff are hard-working, polite, willing, helpful and pleasant including household and hospitality teams. Staff morale generally has improved since the appointment of the current manager the deputy manager have been welcomed by both staff and residents. I have no intention whatsoever of leaving here, for positive reasons given [particularly the safety and security in the current climate. However, would welcome more consistency and communication overall with staff at all levels."

"My cousin is currently under your care. I have ordered a jig-saw board for her which was delivered to the home on the 27th March 2021. To date, my cousin states that she has not received this board to which she was really looking forward to using. I have repeatedly asked members of staff to try and find out the whereabouts of the board, some promise to find out but no response is forthcoming, and one even told me that she has received the board! I am most annoyed and disappointed that this home cannot provide me with a straight answer to what has happened to, what is a rather expensive item for me, and an essential enjoyment for my cousin. I look forward to hearing your response."

"In 2019 my daughter and I visited Hilderstone Hall, we were shown around the hall and were very impressed. My husband came to stay in the Hall for 2 weeks respite. From the telephone calls I made to them they said he was doing very well and joining in the activities which I believe he enjoyed. As he was in memory lane I think he was comfortable. So I can only say his respite was satisfactory. I can only go on what the staff have told me."

"My Gorgeous Grandma has been living at Hilderstone Hall for the past 5 years. She is 103 years old and loves to sing. Grandma came into the home very poorly and through the dedication, love, care and attention of all the staff, she has thrived, enjoyed her time and feels very cared for. This has been even more apparent during Covid-19. Living 200 miles away and not being able to visit has been very hard for me but I have had regular FaceTime ‘Visits’. She is bed-bound and unable to have window/garden visits so I have a huge Thank you to the staff for sorting out special permission for me to visit grandma while I was up in the area. I had not seen grandma since February and being able to see her face to face meant the world to both of us. She is still my gorgeous Grandma and it was clearly evident that the staff have really looked after her, kept her well, happy and still singing. Thank you, it has been a weight off my shoulders knowing she is so well cared for and very much loved by you all."

"Staff cannot be faulted. Always friendly, helpful and polite. A big 10/10 plus. Minor problems in bedroom/bathroom dealt with rapidly and efficiently by management. More staff needed to cope with incessant demands on their services, especially at mealtimes. One carer cannot deal with 16 people in the restaurant, including those with dementia who may require assistance. All in all a very useful experience as a first-time resident."

"Moving to the care home in November 2018 was quite traumatic for Mom as she was transferred from the hospital due to her health deteriorating, so she could not return home. Only the wonderful care, support and kindness shown by the team ensured that she settled into her new home. Whenever I visit I see a team dedicated to the care and comfort of the elderly. "Impressed with the consistent high standard of food, not only to the variety of choice but opportunity given to provide requested alternatives that are offered. Carers are well aware of my fables and adapted accordingly, so now anticipate my needs. This has resulted in progress made in terms of efficiency, comfort, safety and dignity and the majority share a keen sense of humour with me. Buzzers answered promptly and explanations given if something is tardy. Compromise works wonders. Staff worked well as a team relating to difficulties over transport to the dentist. Feel much happier now and welcome the encouragement given to engage in the vast variety of activities. I enjoy socialising with many other residents. "My wife spent twelve nights respite care at Hilderstone Hall. A lovely building, a comfortable room, excellent facilities, first class food and drinks, but the trump card for Hilderstone Hall is the excellent staff. At all levels, including cleaners up to management level, the staff are caring, pleasant and enthusiastic - always helpful. The downside was that my wife did not get as many showers as at our home and sadly, a number of items disappeared - two new bras, a pair of pants and a new facecloth. Disappointing, but overall we would use and recommend Hilderstone Hall."

"My husband had Alzheimer's for 4 or 5 years. I looked after him at home during this time with help from a sitter who was a good friend to him and stayed for 2 hours most weekdays during the last 2 years so that I could have some time to go out etc. Family support from my son and daughter was excellent. However, after a fall at home, he hurt his back no bones broken just bruising and it was no longer possible for me to help him when I was on my own. He was admitted to Hilderstone Hall "memory lane" where he received excellent care he settled down well and we were looking forward to seeing him back to his normal "happy self". However medical problems intervened he was transferred to hospital with kidney failure and died a few days later."

"I have had a long association with Barchester Hilderstone Hall through 3 of my relatives having received care. I am extremely satisfied and grateful to the all of the staff, who have made this association a pleasant one for myself and my relatives. Individual needs are met fully, thereby ensuring that the best possible service of care is afforded to the residents. My relatives have always been shown courtesy, compassion and respect for their particular situation. Above all, they have had their dignity assured. The staff conduct their duties selflessy and with a noticeable pride. As the registered Next of Kin, I am always kept informed of situations concerning my relatives as they arise; and am offered advice and guidance as to the course of action available to me if necessary."

"I came to Hilderstone Hall (my second stay) after surgery to recuperate, suffering shock effects from a drip administered in hospital where I had to return suddenly for several days. The staff at Hilderstone Hall were very kind and understanding dealing with eating difficulties (effects of drip) that slowed my recovery. Also, always cheerful, friendly and willing to help from management to all levels. I am very grateful to them all."

"My dad died in hospital in mid-June. Hilderstone Hall was his home and everyone there was 'family'. Dad had a lovely and dignified 'send off' with staff and some residents paying respects. A lovely buffet was provided afterwards with staff giving me great warmth and support. A marvellous team."

"A beautiful place in a stunning tranquil setting, Perfect for respite care. I can see there are on-going renovations being done at the moment but what has already been done is homely and unlike what you expect for a care home. All the staff that I met were friendly and could not do enough for you. An outstanding place that I would not hesitate to recommend to others."

"Hildersone Hall has made significant improvements not only is the home a much more pleasant place to be after the refurbishment but the extra staff on duty has made a huge difference. Please keep it up. Thank you. Staff and management are always lovely."

"We have been visiting our friend on a weekly basis ever since he entered about 6 years ago. The staff are always friendly and helpful and under the recent new management seem to be more attentive. The home has always been a bit run down in appearance and the major works going on just now should correct this. The garden needs a lot of attention to restore them to some of their former glory."

"Mum has been a resident at the home for nearly 3 years. It has a warm, welcoming atmosphere with polite and attentive staff. There have been several changes in management/staff as well as major refurbishments recently. I believe it now provides a much more consistent level of care than previously. Communication/dialogue with care/nursing staff has improved and as a family, we feel more included in Mum’s care. The most important part of her care is that she is cared for with dignity. She has advanced Alzheimer’s and cannot verbally communicate her needs or wishes. She relies on care staff to meet those needs in a caring, safe and effective way. Staff try their very best to meet her needs. I would like to see more activities/stimulation for those nursed in their rooms as this would enhance their quality of life, at least for short periods. We welcome the improvements and hope that the consistency of care we have recently experienced continues."

"I visited Hilderstone Hall as the residents' were enjoying a "drama/singing production". I was so pleased to see the residents treated with the utmost respect, care and dignity. The welcome provided by the admin officer was faultless - polite, helpful, cheerful and very welcoming. A great advocate and representative of Hilderstone Hall. The home was bright, clean and welcoming and all the staff were approachable and kind."

"Vast improvement with the management team, from which the excellent staff now get the credit and support they deserve. Christmas day was difficult for my dad and therefore me too. I cannot thank everyone enough for the care and compassion shown to us. Also, table companions for Christmas dinner had been well thought out."

"Hilderstone Hall! Wow it's brilliant! My 100+ year-old aunt was so anxious about her move. She immediately felt at home and the welcoming staff and the continuing care staff are amazing with her. At 100 she deserves the care and attention she is getting. Well done Hildersone! Many thanks from the family."

"Our aunt seems very well cared for. She is always well dressed, including jewellery and looks comfortable. She is usually cheerful, though confused but content. We find the staff very approachable and helpful. They treat my aunt with respect and are aware of her needs. She has a lovely room which is clean, well furnished and arranged."

"Hilderstone Hall is a care home I'd be happy to find myself in if and when the time comes. They are fortunate to have a warm and friendly long-term "welcomer" in the entrance hall. Staff are friendly too and helpful if needed. The rooms are always clean, comfortable and tidy. I know only the friend I visit and take out weekly in my car. Pressure sore problems (inevitable with constant sitting) are well attended to. Contact with care staff, in my presence, has always been cheerful and encouraging towards my friend. My only criticisms 1) He;s sometimes not been shaved. 2) His nails (as today when I "dealt with them") are often not cut."

"My mother has been at the care home for five months now and can only comment as the best home in the area. I have visited many homes and my mum had a short stay at another care home. The difference is unbelievable !! The main plus points starting in order are, 1, The excellent caring staff, the food, standards of cleanliness and location, I cannot fault anything about the home. I go back again to the staff everyone I have met is doing the job because they care and want to do it and other care homes seem to employ temp staff that just go through the motions."

"The staff at Hilderstone Hall are friendly and welcoming to relatives of their residents. They provide excellent activities and encourage residents to take part. Relatives are also invited to many of the activities and to accompany residents on some of the organised trips. The menu offered is varied and nutritious, although the staff do not always remind residents that they can have alternatives to the menu if they would prefer. Staff generally, but not always, pay great attention to the safety of the residents, sometimes forgetting to ensure that a buzzer is within reach, and that the motion-sensor mat is appropriately placed in bedrooms. There is not always a member of staff in communal areas. Communication between members of staff is generally good, although occasionally relatives are not informed of visits and reports of outside agencies. The staff are friendly to, and supportive of, residents, and help to make Hilderstone a home for all their residents."

Thank you to everyone who took such special care of my wife during the final months of her life. Though the decision to move her from her own home was a very difficult one the family always knew that she was being well cared for by the wonderful staff at Hilderstone. Thank you all for helping my wife to end her life with dignity amongst friends.

I would like to thank you for you kindness, understanding and promptness in admitting my uncle to Hilderstone Hall. He was only there for a short time but had he been more aware it would have been exactly what he wanted - the lovely room caring staff and, if he had been well enough the lovely gardens.
Thank you for making us feel welcome that first night, and for all the offers of cups of tea and for anyone who had anything to do with my uncle. you have a wonderful, caring and dedicated team making Hilderstone Hall what it is - an outstanding nursing home.
