Many older women want to lose weight to get healthier, but it can be hard knowing where to start.
According to a new study, there are a few simple things females can do to shed those extra pounds.
Researchers found that faithfully keeping a food journal, eating three set meals a day and avoiding eating in restaurants can help women lose weight.
The findings are the result of observations of self-monitoring and diet-related behaviours and meal patterns on overweight and obese postmenopausal women.
Dr Anne McTieran, leader of the study, commented: "When it comes to weight loss, evidence from randomised, controlled trials comparing different diets finds that restricting total calories is more important than diet composition such as low-fat versus low-carbohydrate."
It is not known if men also benefit from these techniques but, as a rule, those hoping to lose weight should decrease their food intake and increase their physical activity.
