Scottish dementia researchers could receive £450,000 funding boost

Dementia researchers in Scotland are set to receive a £450,000 funding boost from Alzheimer's Research UK and the Scottish government.

Announced at the Scottish Clinical Dementia Research Network Conference (SDCRN) in Stirling this week by Michael Matheson MSP, Scottish minister for health, the move will allow scientists to apply for funding for projects which could improve dementia care and work towards a possible cure.

The funding will see the charity and the Scottish government invest up to £225,000 each for projects which are approved. Applications are to be submitted by June 14th, with final decisions made by October 31st.

Mr Matheson said: "The Scottish government is committed to improving all aspects of care for the increasing number of people in Scotland with dementia and research plays a key role in helping us to reach this goal."

Dr Eric Karran, director of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, added there*at are currently around 56,000 people with dementia in Scotland and it is hoped that this funding will make a difference to people's lives.
