Saffron 'may treat liver cancer'

Saffron could be used to treat liver cancer, according to researchers, improving the lives of those with the condition using home care.

A study published in journal Hepatology found that saffron provides a significant chemopreventive effect against the condition in animal models.

Inhibition of cell proliferation and stimulation of apoptosis was observed in rats with induced liver cancer when they were given saffron.

Professor Amr Amin from United Arab Emirates University said: "With limited treatment options, approaches that prevent cancer development are among the best strategies to protect against the disease.

"Our findings suggest that saffron provides an anti-cancer protective effect by promoting cell death (apoptosis), inhibiting proliferation of cancerous cells, and blocking inflammation."

In other news, caffeine may cut the risk of skin cancer, according to a study from Rutgers University.

Applying caffeine directly to the skin may guard against the condition by inhibiting ATR - a protein enzyme.
