CQC staff to receive dementia training

Staff at the Care Quality Commission (CQC) are set to receive training on dementia awareness from the Alzheimer's Society for the first time.

At present 80 per cent of people living in care homes have either dementia or another form of cognitive decline. This training, which will be rolled out to more than 2,000 staff, will the regulator to stop the conditions signs and symptoms.

It aims to give CQC employees and insight into what living with dementia is like for patients as well as look at ways in which communication can be improved.

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, said that the CQC plays a major role in ensuring dementia patients receive the best level of care possible.

"As the people who are responsible for care standards it’s crucial that all CQC staff are aware of the particular needs of people with dementia," he stated.

It is estimated that more than 800,000 people are currently living with dementia in the UK.
