Winchester House Care Home in Rochester

Winchester House is a perfect home from home, located in the beautiful countryside of Tonbridge and Malling, close to the historic city of Rochester and the Medway Towns. Formerly a rectory constructed in 1875, Winchester House has been tastefully restored to provide elegant surroundings across 5 separate units.  We provide 24-hour nursing care alongside specialist care for people with dementia in our two dedicated Memory Lane Communities. These communities are designed to be dementia friendly and promote well-being for individuals as well as providing stimulating activity areas.

We're proud of our socially active community which revolves around superb facilities alongside first-rate care. We employ two activities coordinators and have a wide range of activities that include singing sessions, cake making, film sessions, games, quizzes and regular outings for all of our residents.

We would be delighted to show you around so that you can see what we have to offer for yourself – please feel free to drop in or to call us if you would like advice.

Types of care

Winchester House offers individualised general nursing care for older people and care for individuals living with physical disabilities. We also specialise in person-centred nursing and residential care for those living with dementia. Our care is tailored to individual needs and promotes independence wherever possible. The care we offer is very responsive should someone's care needs change, and our close links with local health and social care services mean that we are very adaptable whilst always focusing on the individual and maintaining high standards.

Our Team

The dedicated and experienced team are passionate about providing quality care to each individual living at the home.

Sue Simmonds

General Manager

Hi, my name is Sue, and I am the General Manager here at Winchester House. Welcome to our website!

I have worked here since January 2010 and have been working as a General Manager for Barchester since March 2009. I qualified as a General Nurse at Kent and Canterbury Health Authority in 1985 and went on to specialise in the care of older people.

I have a BSc (hons) in Nursing Studies and a Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory). I have worked in a variety of health and social care settings throughout my career, including rehabilitation, long term care, regulation, education and dementia care.

I am committed to delivering the very highest standard of care to residents within the home, offering them an opportunity to enjoy their lives to the best of their ability. I enjoy leading my team in a way in which they are empowered to use their skills, knowledge and experience for the well-being of those we support.

Agata Szymanska

Non-Clinical Deputy Manager

I have worked at Winchester House since 2009 and, throughout my time here, I have been a Healthcare Assistant, Team Leader and a Home Trainer. In 2016, I was offered the position of HR Administrator; and in 2017 I was promoted to Non-Clinical Deputy Manager.

I’m responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality care to those we support, managing the implementation of company policies and regulatory requirements; and for achieving the best possible care ratings from external regulatory bodies.

Sheila Moore

Senior Activities Coordinator

I have worked at Winchester House for over 5 years; my first year was spent working as a Healthcare Assistant and then as an Activities Coordinator.

Prior to joining Winchester House, I was a pub landlady, which may seem to be worlds away from what I do now, but actually required very similar skills - specifically interpersonal and organisational skills.

We plan our activity rota every week to ensure that we can cater for the different resident groups and individual requirements. This can mean that one day I am organising a communion service, hosting entertainers and then popping out to buy birthday presents for residents; and the next day I may be calling bingo and assisting some of the gentlemen - and the odd lady - to our local B&Q for a workshop.

Fran Bannister

Head Chef

I qualified as a Chef at the age of eighteen. At Winchester House we strive to give our residents and staff a varied and nutritious diet. All of our food is freshly cooked in our kitchen. We try not to use dietary supplements as we consider freshly cooked food, supplemented with nutritious snacks, such as smoothies and mousses, is more effective for maintaining and increasing individuals’ weights. This is underpinned by the focus of meal times being a social and important part of each and every day.

One of my favourite things is to make cakes and I am lucky that we have so many birthdays and special events to celebrate that require the chef team to make beautiful cakes.

Peter Grant

Maintenance Manager

I have worked for Barchester Healthcare for over 5 years and have been the Head of Maintenance here at Winchester House for almost as long. In addition to completing routine maintenance for the home, there are often special projects that need to be managed, such as equipment breaking down that requires fixing as soon as possible.

I am the home's fire trainer as well, so I am responsible for fire safety and training within the home.

Tanya Goldsmith

Head Housekeeper

My dear mother was a resident at Winchester House and was very happy here. After she passed away in 2013, I decided to apply for a job here as member of the housekeeping team. I love working here so much and I enjoy being able to put smiles on people’s faces every day. In 2016, I was promoted to Head Housekeeper.

I love the environment of Winchester House; no day is the same and I am very grateful to Barchester for giving me this opportunity. I hope that I will be here for many more years!

Lucky

Pet Therapist

My name is Lucky and I have lived and worked at Winchester House for the past three years.  My main duties are based in the Dementia Residential Unit, Marconi.

My work is very demanding.  I have to be friendly with residents, staff and visitors and keep the odd lap warm, as required.  I train whoever I can in the art of cat feeding (I do like my food) and I patrol the local fields to check for any unwanted moggies from the nearby village of Wouldham, who may want to usurp me from my post.

In addition to all of the above, I am expected to test the comfort of the sofas and chairs (when they are not occupied), monitor the sunshine levels in the gardens and hide from Sheila, the Senior Activities Coordinator, when she needs to take me to the vets for a routine check up.
