Activities at Sutton Valence Care Home

Our activities team are great at building the activities programme around the likes and interests of the people we care for. Ensuring that our social events offer fun and adventure is part of the ethos of our home; it’s important that those we support can enjoy an active and social lifestyle. Of course, there will always be those who prefer peace and quiet, and in these instances, a cup of tea and a chat are always welcomed.

Meet Ruben...

"Look dear, look at my doll that my Grand-daughter, Sophie, bought for me out of her piggy bank" was the greeting I got this morning from our beautiful Phyllis.

The shear delight and pleasure she got receiving 'Ruben' doll was electrifying.

"Ruben has a button nose, just like my Mum's but hers was prettier" Joan said. Whilst taking her photo, Phyllis asked if she could take one of Ruben for her Grand-daughter.

A natural! - Phyllis found it fascinating that she could see the photo once it was taken and proceeded to explain to me about cameras in the 'olden days'

I think Phyllis took a marvellous shot of Ruben; don't you?

Exploring Crafts

What an eclectic few weeks our residents have had at Sutton Valence Care Home.

Our main aim was to try our hands at different medium crafts. Fantastic creative thinking was certainly in full flow. It's all still work in progress to produce the final suggested projects; group painting, pom pom art, upcycling, felt flower wreaths and brooches plus more.

As each project evolves our residents are sure to be proud to show off their creative hands and minds.

Norman visits Maidstone Market

This morning we were up bright and early to take Resident Norman to his favourite spot Maidstone Market. Norman is a local man and has been going there for years, he particularly loved showing us around and bumping into friends he has made from the Market. Norman purchased a beautiful picture and frame which he can’t wait to hang in his bedroom. It was an absolute pleasure to hear of how Norman remembers Maidstone town from years past and how it has changed in his eyes.

RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch

This year we took part in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch with our residents and collected information for the National Survey.

Residents had a brilliant time preparing bird food, filling up birdfeeders to attract the birds before they got started and then looking up the different species in their bird books to make sure they were logging them correctly. They saw Wrens, Blue Tits, Robins, Wood Pigeons and hungry Magpies.

Crafting

At Sutton Valence, we like to take the time, to get to know our residents because for some, this is an important part of their life, and we take this into account when planning activities.

While looking at the spiritual welfare for our residents we have decided to get involved with Peter Walker Sculptor’s beautiful ‘Peace Doves’ an art installation at Rochester Cathedral this month.

We have collected paper Doves for our residents to write prayers on.

This will then be returned to the Cathedral and added to what is planned as a stunning and thought provoking art installation.
