"My father was extremely poorly and since being in this wonderful place has put over a stone in weight on. The meals are fantastic and a choice too. The place is very welcoming, in fact home from home. Bedroom is comfortable and always kept clean. Clothes are regularly laundered and I am 100% happy with the care. Also various activities bring residents close together."

"'Barchester Newton House Care Home' staff have provided an exceptional service for my mother. Staff nurses and care assistants have demonstrated a kind, compassionate and diligent approach towards my mother at all times and during what has been a difficult time, they have gone the extra mile in trying to make my mother comfortable now she is at the end of her life. I have been deeply touched by the high levels of professionalism shown and the genuine kindness of these caring and committed workers. Day time staff such as the staff nurses have also shown these amazing qualities not to mention the cleaners and kitchen staff. I am and will remain eternally grateful for this group of dedicated staff and take comfort for knowing good people who have looked after my mother so well."

"My husband spent 10 months as a resident in Newton House. He was always showed dignity and respect and we grew to treat Newton House as our home. I spent 6 hours a day with my husband and the staff, sometimes working under great pressure, always found the time to give support to both me and my husband. The nursing care at the end was second to none and I will be extremely grateful to Newton House."

"My wife has settled in well at Newton House. The home is clean and bright and the food is very good. The staff are really kind and very supportive of her illness. The activities team are great, planning regular events and outings which she really enjoys. We enjoy a coffee in the café and the homemade biscuits are absolutely moreish. I visit the home daily and I receive a friendly welcome from everyone. Thank you."

"My friend has been a resident since late last year. I definitely think the care has improved in the last 6 months. When my friend was admitted no rehab seemed available so he very quickly became unable to walk and then bedridden. The staff have always been very kind to him and he always appears clean and comfortable as possible."

"Staff are very friendly and efficient, however, I feel they are often rushed as there are not enough staff during peak times. For example; my mother has occasionally missed her bath day because of the lack of staff. I would in fact, like my mother to have more than one bath a week. Overall, very nice friendly place."

"Always very clean but feel staff sometimes need more training with certain patients, have more respect for patients and don't treat everyone like they have dementia. Getting to patients quicker when the bell is pressed could also be improved and making sure equipment is always at hand. Hoist out of use a lot and they don't have another one on the ward."

"My mother has been a resident for 7 years. We have seen many changes in that time. Her nursing care has been very consistent and excellent. Her nurses know her well and vulnerability. The only change that has been a disappointment is the gardens of her unit which used to be a delight but which are this year a total disappointment and uncared for. The activities team are excellent and the carers are well trained, it would be good if more of then stayed longer term."

"The staff are very helpful and friendly and treat the residents with dignity. The Castlegate unit is well designed for those residents who like to walk with secure access to the garden. My wife is on a liquidised diet which never looks very appetising however the normal diets look reasonable. The rooms are always clean and tidy with en-suite toilet and hand basin with the option of adding personal furniture. Overall, good experience."

"My mum came in for 1 week's respite care, to give me a break and to allow a shower to be fitted. On the first impression, the home is clean and tidy and the food is very good. However, on reflection, I feel the staff/carers need to be more proactive with the clients and be more encouraging when it comes to moving clients about - showering and washing. My mum had never had any odour before she came in but did when she came home. She also had an untreated eye infection (despite me raising it with a staff member ) - all it took was a call to the GP on the day she got home. I know it is unsettling for anyone to move from their own home, maybe my expectations were too high, but I expected her to be more supported in her new environment."

"My husband was admitted in October last year and I was very impressed with the welcome we received when we arrived. Staff are very happy to help with anything, always smiling and nothing is too much trouble. Activities are wonderful, just been to the Valentine meal which was excellent. The way tables were dressed and decorations around the room, given a box of chocolates and a rose. The staff could not have done more to make it a lovely day."

"The care staff are excellent but some of the nursing staff do not maintain the carers. The word 'carer' as a job title does not apply. They're too busy to sit and spend time talking to residents and would love to do that more. In my opinion, the nursing should do 'physically' more things to assist when busy and short staffed. Food quality has become worse and portions too large causing high levels of wastage as most people are older they are slow to eat/feed themselves. More foods should be softer and more time given. Juice (fresh) only in the morning is pathetic. Also, it would really help nurses if more meds were dispersible/liquid."

"I would like to highly praise and thank your staff for all they did for my Mum whilst she was in their care. They went above and beyond their duties in all areas. Words cannot express our gratitude for the way they made her last few days as painless and dignified as possible and how they supported and made it bearable for her family. Nothing was too much for them. Can't name anyone in person but you should be very proud of the very high standard your staff have set. Thank you."

"As a carer myself I was well impressed with the standard of the care, cleanliness, the warmness and friendliness of the staff, nurses and management. They worked very well as a team and nothing was too much trouble. They treated my mother and ourselves with such dignity it made us feel like it was all family. I have been in a lot of care homes and as good as some of them were, nothing comes close to Newton House. I am really pleased my Mum ended her last days in such a lovely, warm welcoming place. Thank you to all staff nurses."

"All the carers, nurses, night and day work extremely hard. I feel there should be an increase of staff during the day and at night to deliver more one to one care. The opinions of all staff need to be taken into consideration plus all residents when changing rooms at short notice. All managers should listen to their staff on day to day running of the home and not to just adhere to their budgets."

"The service provided for my husband has hugely improved since he was first admitted in January 2017. The staff now know and understand his needs and have responded very well (he is not the easiest of patients). The nursing staff are excellent. "We were recommended Newton House by friends who had relatives here. Newton house staff are doing all they can to make my husband comfortable at end of life. He has not complained, but sometimes I have to ask for him to have his nails cut or to make certain he has the mat or bell nearby. The staff are kind and calm which is also a calming influence on relatives who do, of course, worry. The food is good."

"My Dad has been a resident in Newton House Care Home for almost 5 years. When he arrived he would enjoy walking around the home and looking at everything on display and was also allowed to touch. "This place and the staff are just amazing! My nan was only in there for a week before Christmas before she passed on Boxing Day, but the care was second to none and the staff looked after us, especially with family members staying as we knew time was running out for Nan. The care and compassion of the staff was brilliant and one in particular was amazing. The place is clean and well organized. Couldn't have wished for a better place for my lovely nan to spend her last days. A huge thank you to everyone who cared for and supported my nan and us as family."

"I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to you and your teams for everything you do for my mum, on Westgate. I have been able to visit her on 2 occasions now, with a weekly rolling visit and FaceTime planned from hereon in. It has been an extremely difficult time for us as a family, as we have always had Mum come home to us every 2nd weekend or so. She lived with us for 10 years prior to her dementia becoming unsafe for her to be left alone whilst we were at work, and so for her not to be able to do this with us has been deeply distressing for all of us. Your team has, as always, been so very kind and considerate to Mum's evergrowing needs. It is wonderful to see the genuine love, care and tenderness that your team displays towards her. This is extremely comforting to see (from a 3-meter social distance) as I cannot yet give her a very much longed-for hug. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

"I could not fault the staff, friendly, helpful. They were often understaffed and they had to move between the blocks which was not ideal with Covid. Food was good but meals were too close together for me. Three times I had no toilet paper, once I really needed it and had to ring. The shower head made it difficult to take a shower. The TV was too low as the bed end blocked it. Staff had to put it on a box. It would have made sense to mount it to the wall."

"Since my mother was first admitted to Newton House, I cannot speak highly enough of the care she had received. The staff is without fail, cheerful, helpful, and compassionate. They encourage her to take part in activities without pushing her and are always willing to go that little bit further. We have felt confident that she is in the best place possible at this stage of her life, and have no regrets about her move to Newton House; traumatic for all of us. The staff has gone above and beyond, and we are forever grateful. Thank you so very much."

"My wife was moved to Newton House in early May. She has Alzheimer's but due to neglect in another home, she had lost a lot of weight in a short time and developed serious pressure sores. The astonishing care that she received from the nurses and other staff has resulted in weight gain and finally the healing of the pressure sores. Above all, they have kept me informed with good news and were not afraid to tell me straight if it was not so good. I thought I would never see my wife out of bed again, but on my last visit, she was in a wheelchair. Although she does not communicate she has a smile on her face and looks content. The three young ladies who were looking after her were so kind to her (and me), apparently, she is going to have a Chinese meal soon - a sweet and sour chicken should go down well. The care that my wife has received was exceptional and a tribute to the management and staff. Thank you all and bless you for saving her life and giving a real lady some peace and dignity."

"Just wanted to pass on our thanks to all the staff at Newton House. Without exception all the staff my dad has had looking after him since he transferred to Newton House in July have been exceptional. This has meant that my dad has settled in and trusts staff to look after him, a major achievement that was never really fulfilled at his last home. Staff really go out of their way to get to know residents and do the best to provide what a resident enjoys. Although a small thing like having a bath may seem to us, it’s a lovely experience for my dad and now the staff know he enjoys this, they try and work it into their timing as much as possible. My dad always looks well cared for, he has always taken great care of his appearance and staff ensure that this remains the same, this brings comfort to my mum also. When we call staff are always helpful, supportive and respectful, and eager to accommodate both my dad’s needs and those of his family. Could not ask for more, thank you."

"Since Covid-19 came along I have been unable to see my mother in person. To view her condition, to offer her my affection and to be involved in her day to day life. This has been a hard adjustment as previously we had weekly visits and daily phone calls. I have had to put my faith in the staff of this care home, at a genuinely frightening time not only in terms of the world crisis but also at a time when my mother's condition has massively deteriorated. I know it was the right choice because of how well physically and emotionally she seems there. The staff I have spoken and video called with seem so overwhelmingly positive and their welcoming and chatty warmth reassures me that they are doing their best for my mum. It means the world to me."

"It’s been a difficult year for everyone but my comfort has been knowing that Mum is genuinely cared for in Newton. Whenever I see her on video calls she is clean and tidy and smiling and I know she has the best care. The team that deals directly with Mum are wonderful and go over and above to make life as comfortable, safe and fun for her! They all deserve medals."

"Unfortunately, nearly the last 12 months have been a washout and so sad. My mum's had a few falls through lockdown but I can't fault the carers keeping me informed on this, the only thing that upsets me is I live over an hour away and in lockdown, despite not being able to visit Mum, I had a call in the evening to go to the hospital where Mum was taken. She was left on her own strapped to a stretch board for over 5 hours (that's not the care home's fault) but I thought a carer would have had to go with her as Mum doesn't have full mental compacity, and with visits stopped I was surprised I was even asked to go. On a positive note, I cannot fault the home, it's clean and the carers are very friendly; my mum's contented for sure. My mum always looks clean washed etc. The staff always make you feel welcome, I love the activities team, always chatty and always updating us when we visited. Through lockdown, one lady has been a superstar. I can't thank her enough for updates and video calls - you have helped me through this."

"In these challenging times, I have found all the staff to be very caring. We have been kept informed, at every stage, about their plans to keep everyone safe and their approach to Mum's care. Although we haven’t always been able to visit in person, we have been able to see Mum, latterly via video call. She is being well looked after by the nursing and care staff and entertained with a multitude of activities by the activities team. Thank you, everyone, for looking after my mum so well."

"It's been so difficult during the covid-19 pandemic. My Mum went into care at the very beginning of lockdown so it's been very hard not seeing her in her new residence. However, the staff who I have spoken to or had contact with seem very caring with regard to my Mum's wellbeing. Every time I have enquired for information, the staff were well informed and honest about what they were telling me. They were also very friendly and have been great at enabling video calls using their own personal phones to do this. I'm sure everyone there has had to work unbelievably hard to provide quality care whilst making it as safe as possible for the residents. (My review is based on my overall impression of the home from phone and video calls as I have so far been unable to visit in person due to the restrictions of the pandemic.)"

"The care home staff have been great at arranging video chats with mum regularly ever since lockdown has made visiting in person impossible for the time being. This has been happening with several family members frequently. I would like to personally thank the staff involved in this. I think this care and attention to detail has made a real difference in how happy and settled mum has been in the home."

"I would like to recommend this care home. All the staff are a very committed team, and dedicated professionals, with a very very high standard towards all the residents. We have seen all the love and care that they give to our love ones. If they need anything, it will be provided, without any problem. We like to thank all the castle gate team for all the hard work that they do, and a special thanks to one lady and the team for sending photos and updates about the care home and activities, (if you have a loved one and need to find special care with love and an excellent team), then, Barchester Newton is the one for you, make time and go for a look round; it's amazing!"

"My wife and I paid two visits to Newton House in May on our way up to and back from Scotland. The first was arranged beforehand, the second was not, being in the spur of the moment. The staff could not have been more kind and helpful on both occasions. We were allowed to see our (having passed lateral flow tests) 90-year-old aunt in the same room without a plastic barrier and able to share lunch and coffee with her. The Activities Coordinator was especially understanding on the first occasion as were her colleagues (whose names we did not get) on the second. Congratulations to all of them."

"In 2020 my husband had a massive brain bleed which left him with vascular dementia. Finding a care home near to me was not a difficult choice. I had heard great things about Newton House and the staff from friends. This year on his birthday, he has now been a resident for over 12 months, the staff decorated the family room with balloons and garlands and brought us a delicious cake with candles for him to blow out. They allowed our little dogs to join in the party. The staff went out of their way to make my husbands birthday special. A big thank you to all the wonderful staff. You are amazing."

The activities team are exceptional in providing entertainment, outings and stimulation for the mind and body, and although she has dementia, she is kept entertained with relevant activities to keep her mind as active as possible. All the staff are friendly and helpful and enjoy their jobs, which is reflected in the atmosphere of the home and the happiness of the residents. The home is well looked after with nice bedrooms, public areas and maintained outside space for the residents to go in nice weather, whilst being secure for their own safety. "My mum has been at Newton House Care Home, for over three years now. This is not a respite place for her as she is in her 90s and her condition is progressive. Mum is bed bound and this means that she is totally reliant on the staff for her everyday needs and her physical and emotional well-being. Being bed bound isn't ideal for a short period of an illness but permanently is totally demoralising. When asked what could be done, the manager was able to source a sling and special wheelchair that accommodated mums fragile state. Mum is now able to access the community, occasionally, when she is well enough. If mum isn't able to get out of her room the activity ladies come to her. All the staff chat with her when they are in the room so I know mum isn't left alone for long periods. I can honestly say that there is no other home that I would want mum to stay in. The staff are totally committed to the resident's holistic care. I cannot recommend the home and staff enough."

"Such a comfort knowing my mum is here. The staff are incredible! So warm, welcoming yet professional. With Dementia it's so important that they are accepted where they are mentally in that moment. This is where the home excels. They have taken mum and allowed her to flourish in what she loves to do and her daily routines. Nothing is too much trouble. "My sister was taken ill at the beginning of January 2023 and was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer and put onto palliative care only for end of life. As she was no longer capable of looking after herself at home and needed nursing care, we found her a place in Newton House. Ever since she was admitted the care has been superb. She has a lovely bright airy room, and the staff are lovely. The nursing staff notify me if there are any problems or issues. Because of the blockages in her digestive system, and her lack of appetite, she eats very little but is regularly kept supplied with milkshakes and anything the staff can try to tempt her. She needs assistance with personal care, and she is extremely happy with all her carers who are friendly and helpful. If any medical issue arises, it is dealt with promptly and a doctor is called if it is thought necessary by the nurses on site. We are extremely happy with the home and would highly recommend it."

Mum is vegetarian and she has wonderful meals prepared for her. Just so pleased we were able to find such a lovely home for her."

All the staff are friendly and helpful and enjoy their jobs, which is reflected in the atmosphere of the home and the happiness of the residents. The home is well looked after with nice bedrooms, public areas and maintained outside space for the residents to go in nice weather, whilst being secure for their own safety. I had heard great things about Newton House and the staff from friends. This year on his birthday, he has now been a resident for over 12 months, the staff decorated the family room with balloons and garlands and brought us a delicious cake with candles for him to blow out. The staff could not have been more kind and helpful on both occasions. We were allowed to see our (having passed lateral flow tests) 90-year-old aunt in the same room without a plastic barrier and able to share lunch and coffee with her.

"Mum transferred to Newton House from a care home no longer able to meet her increasing needs. Changing care homes can be a traumatic experience for the resident - leaving familiar faces and surroundings and moving into a totally new environment with new carers. But to move during COVID, when Mum wouldn’t be able to have visits from me after the initial day was frightening. From day one, the staff couldn’t have been more helpful, accommodating and caring I received update texts from the activities staff who also organised video calls. These reassured me that Mum was well and not stressed or anxious. My recent COVID socially distanced visit to see Mum was such a lovely experience. Mum looked very happy, content and so relaxed. Any fears about whether I had made the right decision to move her just disappeared. Thank you to ALL the staff who care for Mum, especially the activities team."

"My Dad has been a resident in Newton House Care Home for almost 5 years. When he arrived he would enjoy walking around the home and looking at everything on display and was also allowed to touch. He always enjoyed the entertainment and couldn't wait to join in with the singing and dancing. Sadly for the past year, he is now bedridden and has to have everything done for him. Every time the staff attend to him, his face lights up. He is still happy."

"All the carers, nurses, night and day work extremely hard. I feel there should be an increase of staff during the day and at night to deliver more one to one care.

"My wife has been a resident at Newton House for 7 years. During this time, I have seen several changes take place in the home. Generally, I am happy with the care she receives. Since the recent CQC inspection, I have seen improvements in the standard of care. One of the issues was lack of staff which I believe has been addressed, however, I feel that personal interaction between some of the staff is low on the agenda as the staff don't seem to have the time to spend with individuals. The majority of staff seem very compassionate and dedicated members of the team but I would like to see some staff show a more compassionate and caring approach to the residents regardless of the challenges they present. I would like to see more frequent checks on residents who are left in their rooms as I have, on several occasions, found my wife lying in an uncomfortable position."

"Always very clean but feel staff sometimes need more training with certain patients, have more respect for patients and don't treat everyone like they have dementia. She suffers from dementia related to Parkinson's and had lost the ability to stand/walk prior to entering Barchester Newton House Care Home so spent most of her time in a fully adjustable mobile chair.
