What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"Of all the care homes I have visited, this stands out as the most homely and caring. Staff are friendly and attentive and all residents seem happy. Food is very plentiful and nourishing and there is a constant range of activities. I was impressed."

"My sister and I were extremely emotional when our 90-year-old mother was deemed unsafe to be at home, due to her frailty and dementia. Barchester Milford House Care Home has dispelled all of our worries. All of the staff are so kind and caring and we thank them all. Also, our thanks to the manager for working so hard to secure a place for Mum. We could not be happier with Milford House, a safe and secure environment with a happy atmosphere."

"Overall, good. I was welcomed and cared for as needed, not that I needed much except for helping me shower and dispense medicines. My partner had the luxury of two weeks without having to care for me, which was well worth the expense. The staff were uniformly friendly and helpful. A few details: 1) I was a bit disappointed in the 'institutional-style' food. I realise that you are constrained here by the needs of some of the residents. It was disappointing not to have any form of dressing for the salads - surely a sachet of vinaigrette or mayonnaise could be provided. 'Unimaginative' would be my description. 2) I felt that the management side was a bit weak. I'd asked when arriving if a visit from a chiropodist to cut my toenails could be arranged. I was told it would be, but nothing happened. 3) I got the impression that you are understaffed, not helped by the kitchen refurbishment. 4) The housekeeping was a bit chaotic: dirty towels left on the toilet floor weren't cleared away."

"My mother went to Milford House for two weeks of respite. Initially, she did not like it, but by the end of her stay, she did not want to go home. The staff were all lovely and made my mother's stay really super."

"I conclude my stay at Barchester Milford House Care Home with having met wonderful people, who have shown me care and respect. My respite turned out to be a wonderful holiday. I sincerely hope that I shall be accepted back if the time arose that my daughter needed a break away again. I have loved everyone that I have met, I shall take away treasured memories. I pray that God will bless you all and those you care for. Please continue the good work in every department."

"A lovely friendly caring place. Nothing is too much trouble. I have had nearly 6 very happy months here and shall miss my Milford House 'family' very much. Would not hesitate for one second to recommend it to prospective residents and their families."

"I recently supported a friend who was visiting their mum at Milford House and while it wasn't my family member, I would absolutely use their service should I ever need to. I thought the staff were exceptionally friendly, warm and respectful with their patients to make them as happy and comfortable as possible. I feel like they cared deeply about the patient's well-being. They also had activities going on the same which the patients were really excited about and absolutely engaged by. The building and environment as a whole are welcoming and felt like it was a really safe space - the food looked pretty good too! 5 stars!"

"My husband has been a Milford House user since leaving the Spinal Unit in 2010. At first, he was there for 6 months while I had a property converted for his needs and then a respite user. His needs altered in 2018 and I became unable to care for him at home, and he was admitted to Milford House on a permanent basis. The staff have been kind and supportive to him and me since then and have nurtured him back to better health, and he is happy to stay there. This year the staff supported him in arranging a (surprise) proposal on Valentine's Day, even helping him obtain an engagement ring, and also assisted him, and attended, our wedding in July on his 70th birthday. The staff make us feel part of a large family and I am so glad we were able to find such a fantastic place for him to stay."

"My mother has been very happy at Milford for the two weeks respite care stay. The staff are all very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. They all smile! My mother says all the food is delicious to the point that she is now worried about weight gain! Excellent."

"I visited a friend at Milford House last weekend and I must say how impressed I was. There was a lovely, homely atmosphere. The staff were friendly and the care my friend received was wonderful. We spent some time looking at their current art exhibition and what joy that has given to the residents, friends and family of the home. It certainly is a unique concept to have the exhibition on the doorstep. It has been a real talking point with my friends in the women's institute back home. My friend says that the 3 course meals at lunchtime are of a high standard and there is a varied menu each day. It is just like being in a restaurant."

"Friendly and caring staff. Since being in the Milfdor House as a resident, my mother has only undertaken planned hospital visits. Previously, she spent 23 out of 26 weeks in and out of the hospital for various ailments. This illuminates for me the impact of 24-hour nursing care along with 24-hour live-in care."

"I was impressed by the management of Milford, her experience, commitment and high standards. Some of her staff have been here for a considerable length of time. Cleanliness is very good and genuine practical support from the carers. Catering was varied with choices and well cooked. All this strengthened me and I would certainly recommend Milford to anyone. A very minor point, if Grapefruit is on the daily breakfast menu please provide it. How about a physical exercise room for some who need it."

"I cannot praise the staff highly enough the manager and her team for the wonderful, outstanding, support, kindness and commitment they showed my family and I whilst my Auntie was a palliative care patient at Milford House. We feel extremely fortunate that we chose Milford House and that my aunt found comfort and contentment for much longer than initially thought. We are convinced this was a result of the wonderful care she received there. We will always feel indebted to all the wonderful staff at Milford House. Thank you all."

"My mother was extremely worried about going into a care home for respite care. After a couple of days, she said "This is a really nice place to live". By the end of the week, she was calling it home and wanting to stay permanently. My mother is not the easiest of people to please, so a big thank you to all the lovely staff who have made her feel welcome, cared for her needs without fussing and ensured she is happy and comfortable. I am very much relieved that she has been so happy and it is the most relaxed that I have seen my mother since my Dad died. Thank you so much."

"My friend went into the Barchester Milford House Care Home 18 months ago because of incapacity and unable to manage at home even with community care. Everyone at the home was so kind and helpful to special needs. Her room was nicely decorated and with lovely views across the fields. I was able to book and have lunch with her before the restrictions of Covid. She has recently passed away and was treated with dignity, we will all miss her bright smiley face."

"After living with increasing support at home, my mother moved into Milford House Care Home about a year and a half ago. During all that time, she has been suffering from Vascular Dementia and struggles to remember anything or to form meaningful sentences. Since moving into the home we have noticed how happy she is. She loves being surrounded by people who are kind and look after her. There are wonderful activities which she thoroughly enjoys. Although she can't express this in her own words, we can see it in her eyes and members of staff tell us lovely stories of the ways she enjoys dancing with them. We can't thank Milford House enough."

"My brief convalescence at Barchester Milford House achieved everything I had hoped for. Everybody I met seemed cheerful and unfailingly helpful in getting me back on my feet. Although I understand the reason for it, 5.30 was three hours too early for the last meal of the day but retaining the bun from afternoon tea and the dessert from supper until later saw me through."

"A pleasant room overlooking a courtyard garden with doors to the garden. Comfortable and clean. Nursing care very good and carers well trained and helpful. Laundry service much appreciated. The food varies not exciting but adequate. More fresh fruit needed but available on request. Impressed by excellent management. Friendly and caring staff would book again if needed."

"I need to commend Milford House, management and staff for the exemplary care of my aunt. "Mum needed nursing home care and was admitted in March just prior to the nationwide lock-down. The worst possible time to go into "care" where she could have felt abandoned by family and friends. However, Barchester Milford House staff have been wonderful throughout the whole pandemic keeping families informed. Skype calls were offered, which for my 91-year-old mother was an experience. However, she was well supported through these and enjoyed having a chat. We have subsequently visited on 1 July under strict guidance (absolutely necessary) and my daughter and I were so pleased to see my mother looking well and very happy. I feel I could not have chosen a better home for my mother. Thank you to all the staff who have worked so hard during these recent months."

"My father is very well looked after in Milford House. He was with my mother until she passed away in April 2020. Dad was escorted to the funeral of Mum and was and still is well looked after. They were both very happy from 2015-2020 in the home. Dad is still very well looked after. Thank you to all staff in this difficult time."

"My parents (both aged 89) moved into Milford House together in December 2019. Although there were no double rooms available, the manager was very helpful and arranged two adjacent rooms for them. These were set up as a living room and a bedroom so that Mum and Dad could sleep in the same room together. Recently, during the COVID-19 lockdown, they have moved into two larger next-door rooms, which they tell me they are even happier with. The care my parents have received over the last 6-months has been exemplary. They both have chronic health conditions which made staying in their own home untenable, even with care from me and daily visits from carers. Neither of them was at all happy about moving into a care home, but they have settled very well at Milford House which is testament to the high standard of care they have received there from all of the staff. I feel at ease now knowing my parents are safe and well cared for at Milford House."

"We have always been impressed with the standard of care provided by Milford House. The home always has a warm and friendly atmosphere, the staff go above and beyond what would be expected. During this Coronavirus crisis, it is comforting to know that my brother-in-law is being so well looked after particularly as we are unable to visit as we live abroad, knowing he is cared for gives us great peace of mind. Many thanks to you all."

"Very welcoming and friendly atmosphere given that my dad stayed as a respite user for just two weeks. My father found the staff very warm and engaging and they took the time to talk with him. He thought the quality of food was excellent, but he would have liked a warm drink, biscuit or snack in the evening, bearing in mind his dinner was at 5.30 pm."

"My parents initially moved into Milford House together. We knew Dad only had a short time to live, so it was important that he was well looked after and that they would both be happy. Sadly we lost Dad shortly afterwards and now just a few months later we have sadly lost our mum. Everyone at Milford House has been exceptional, they have been friendly, caring and very professional. The care shown to both Mum and Dad could not be bettered. They were both shown respect, courtesy and loving care and for the time Mum was there on her own she settled in better than we could have hoped. At the end of their lives, Mum and Dad were respected and treated with dignity throughout and the whole family felt supported."

"Mum went into Milford House for a week's respite care. To be honest, it was a case of going to the first home which had a place at short notice. However, I was very impressed and Mum settled down quite quickly, so much so that she has now moved in permanently. Milford House has the added bonus of being just 10 minutes' drive from my home and I know the manager, which give me added confidence. I think Mum will be very happy there."

"Our mum was a resident of Milford House for thirteen months. She was well-loved by the staff and always treated as family. She was well cared for with her personal hygiene and always looking clean and looked after. She celebrated her 100th Birthday with a party laid on by the home. This was much appreciated by the family. Leading up to and after her death all the staff have been caring and supportive to us. Thank you so much for your care and attention."

"There is a welcoming atmosphere - coffee and hot drinks plus cake in the reception area is a nice touch. Staff are unfailingly polite, friendly and helpful. The accommodation is very pleasant and maintained to a high standard. There is a feeling of spaciousness and height. The gardens are a particular feature of this home and there is a sunny inner courtyard garden with tables and chairs and parasols. The menu of the day is displayed in the front hall. "I can't recommend Milford House highly enough. The loving way in which they cared for my Mother in her final months was amazing. She had been very ill following a stroke and became much better after moving to Milford House. The staff are lovely, from the nurses to the office, to the kitchen, to the laundry. I was always made really welcome and used to just pop in at any time. I found that the staff were quite prepared to go the extra mile to make Mother comfortable. She had a lovely, big airy room which she felt relaxed in. My partner and I cold called on seven nursing homes and Milford House were the only one to take a medical history before even showing us around. Any questions that I made were responded to promptly and with grace. I am sorry my Mother couldn't enjoy all the activities that were on offer more but I can't think of any place better for her to have been. Thank you all."

"I have been so impressed with the overall care and kindness shown to my Mother at all times by all the lovely staff at Milford House. It is a huge upheaval moving to residential care and my Mother was quite poorly when she first arrived at Milford House. The wonderful staff have devised a care plan to manage her awful pain from Osteoarthritis. I am confident that my Mother will thrive at Milford House. The food is excellent and freshly cooked meals and homemade cakes look very appetising. The gardens are beautiful also."

"My mother has been consistently well cared for since entering Milford House three years ago. If there have been any concerns during this time, they have generally related to the excessive heat in her room during hot summer weather, when perhaps it would have been more comfortable at times had the patio door been opened. Please note that this is more the nature of an observation than a complaint. Otherwise, all Ok, except to note that mother gets far more out of the activities when it has been ensured that her hearing aid is present. The nurses and carers are particularly attentive and friendly, with this, contributes to my mother's contentment."

"My dad recently was transferred to Milford House from a hospital, in final stage cancer. From the moment he arrived, he was treated like a king. He had more care in 10 minutes in Milford House than he had had in the hospital for 5 weeks!! Dad was relaxed and relieved to feel safe and mum and all the family were welcomed by the staff. It felt like home and we are so grateful this precious man got to live his final days surrounded by his family and care staff, who went above and beyond. "My nan spent her last year in Milford House. In this year she was the happiest in a long time so we were able to enjoy quality time together. My mum spent a week in Milford House on respite in September and loved it. All the staff are so friendly. Mum's nights were the worst for her, being a poor sleeper but staff brought her endless cups of decaf tea and chatted with her. Mum loved the varied food so much that she regained her appetite. Sadly Mum passed away in November in hospital having previously lived with dad in another care home, not of our choice. My dad moved to Milford House in December. He has improved so much since moving to Milford House, he has his sense of humour back, he loves his lovely room overlooking Salisbury Cathedral. It's lovely seeing him regain his appetite. I am so happy with Milford House, it's an amazing place and has amazing staff. I can't really thank you enough. They even look after me and make sure I'm alright!"

"We have been pleased overall with Milford House. There are things that could improve but the care can sometimes be dependent on which staff are working, which would be the same in any nursing home. The atmosphere is very relaxed and surroundings are lovely. If you ask for anything, every body is very keen to help. The manager has an open door policy and will always be willing to talk."

"My mother has severe dementia and I could no longer cope with her at home. She has settled into Milford House, I visit her regularly and during my visits to her and whilst walking past many other residents' rooms, I have only heard and seen kindness. She, and others, must try the patience of staff, but they manage to care for her with patience and compassion."

"This is my second visit to Milford House, I came last year and enjoyed so much I came back this year. Everyone is so helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. The ladies who run the downstairs entertainment are excellent and very helpful. I have been very happy here."

"A lovely homely atmosphere, staff could not be more helpful and caring. My experience has always been a good one. Even if the staff are experiencing a busy time, they always make me feel welcome. Professional, courteous, helpful and humorous, this applies to all staff at Milford House."

"Throughout the past 4 years, my wife has been confined to bed with severe arthritis and advancing dementia. I cannot speak highly enough of the personal care and attention she has been given throughout. Milford House is both a home and every member of the team are members of a family. Nothing is too much trouble. Everyone is treated with respect and dignity. There is never a raised voice. Some of the ancillary staff- cleaners, laundry workers, gardeners are always prepared to sit and talk and enter the "looking glass world" of someone with dementia. But all the while there is expert medical oversight and instant communication with the resident's own doctor and surgery. Perhaps the most significant fact is that several members of staff have worked at Milford House for over 20 years and any new members soon learn the ethos and tradition of the past. In an ear when so much criticism is levelled at care homes it is reassuring to know there is a standard of excellence which no one can deny. I have my own name down in case I need similar care in the future!"

"At 92, having been a recluse for fifteen years after losing my confidence because of having several falls (due to arthritis) when I was out, and more recently having developed very bad cataracts which have sapped my confidence still further, I was filled with dread at the thought of having to go into care, even temporarily, when my full-time carer (my daughter) recently became seriously ill. Although it was a major adjustment for me to make, the staff's kindness, competence and willingness to do over and above what was asked, helped me to settle in so well that now I am very sorry to be leaving, and the high quality of everything (even to the tasteful décor) has been the icing on the cake. I have been so impressed that I would not hesitate to recommend other people to come here for respite. It is so unusual to come across an organisation where it would be unfair to single out any individual for praise when all have been so worthy of it. I look forward to my next stay!"

"A warm and friendly atmosphere, combined with a kind and compassionate care in a well-maintained building set in a beautifully landscaped garden and a country setting, have all made this the perfect place for me to convalesce after a serious illness. As a full-time carer myself my 92-year-old mother has stayed here at the same time. Despite the fact that she has been a recluse for 15 years, she has developed such a fondness for Milford House and all the staff that she will be sorry to leave, as will I. We have been very impressed by the high standards and the attention to detail, but it is the staff who make the place so appealing: inexhaustibly polite, tirelessly cheerful, always striving to give the best possible support to residents (even short-stay ones like us) and ever ready to go the extra mile and provide that personal touch which means so much. We have already recommended Milford House to others, and hope to return for another stay ourselves in the near future."

"My wife has been a resident since April 2017. I visit her at least once every day and always find that I am welcomed by the staff at all levels. This treatment makes my visit easier to bear. My wife has difficulty speaking as she has aphasia, but I believe that she likes her carers/nurses and that they are kind to her. Visitors have been impressed with what they see and the facilities she could enjoy. My only adverse comment concerns car parking. Parking space is limited and should be more easily defined. The gardens are very special to us."

"Always a warm welcome from the reception staff and the carers and other staff. A Pleasant homely atmosphere with no smells that unfortunately are noticeable in quite a lot of care homes. Quite a number of long serving staff which provides welcome continuity for residents and visitors. Good choice of food at all mealtimes - very pleasant restaurant with good activities/entertainment for residents. As a visitor, I am able to use the kitchen to make tea/coffee - the staff will assist and get it for me if required. Have been visiting the care home to see my cousin regularly over the last six years."

"My husband had malignant terminal brain tumours and came from the hospice to Milford House for end of life care. The experience was amazing for both of us. The carers and nurses were supportive of both of us, friendly, approachable and endlessly patient. I could have my meals there and remain his wife whilst they did the caring bit. His room became our home. At a very stressful time, I could not have wished for a better place to be. He had a very peaceful death."

"When needing assistance for the toilet, help response time is poor, so have been using the sleep response. Even if someone responded more quickly and prioritised problems, this would help as some people need a much quicker response time."

"My wife has been a resident for three and a half years bedridden throughout and with advanced Alzheimer's. Because I am there every day I know most of the staff and hear what goes on behind the scenes. I can honestly say every resident is treated with great respect and personal care. There is never any raised voices or impatience even with the most demanding. Every resident is visited on a regular basis for personal washing, bed changing etc. Visitors can come at any time and staff are always accessible I have my own name down in case there is a sudden crisis."

"The care staff and admin team could not be more helpful and supportive. It is clear they hold genuine affection for the residents even when their challenging behaviour must be trying. They are keen to involve relatives with decisions regarding care and are always friendly and professional. Areas to improve would be cleanliness of residents rooms, communication with the nursing team and visibility of management. Otherwise, a well run and caring home."

"Barchester Milford House Care Home is a caring and understanding home. Everyone works hard, but things get pressured when there isn't enough time to complete the job. If minor issues arise, they are sorted effectively. I do not see any problems that are on-going that effect my father's care. He is comfortable and is well cared for. Staff are friendly and helpful and very welcoming."

"I have visited Milford House over a period of eight years - and have been very impressed by the care of everyone, for residents and each other. I never feel I am visiting a "home", I feel I am welcomed home by all the staff and the residents, who are happy and so well cared for. It is where I would wish to be when I can no longer look after myself."

"My father was transferred from Salisbury District Hospital in October 2015 following frequent falls in his own home. We sadly had to make the decision to put him into a nursing home and we knew it would be difficult for him to accept. When my father was greeted by all the care and admin staff, they were warm, friendly and welcoming. The care my father has received has been excellent. All staff are very empathetic, supportive and kind to all of us. The whole team provide a very safe and happy environment for my father and I cannot fault the care he has."
