Activities at Harton Grange Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Marius Sidoriuc

Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Marius, I am the activities coordinator here at Harton Grange. I joined Barchester's family in 2021, as I found their approach and standards on dementia very interesting. Since early 2022 I work for Barchester as both activities coordinator and care assistant. In 2018, I started my journey in health and social care as a care assistant and very soon after, I completed courses on dementia and activities (NAPA, level 2) and I worked as both activities coordinator and care assistant in Kent. I'm also an apprentice in health and social care. I've met some amazing people that have guided my understanding of dementia.

The most important thing for me is to see our residents achieving a meaningful raison d'etre, living as they like and to benefit from a range of activities starting from Namaste to reminiscing and spiritual needs (such as praying or listening to hymns), art and craft, armchair exercises, music therapy or finger nail pamper sessions.

I like to acknowledge that I am working as a part of a whole team, including the fantastic management, hospitality and maintenance departments, promoting a person centred approach for each resident and we are glad to know each persons preferences and abilities in order to plan how the day will look with them. One way we are able to do this is through our residents' and family' meetings where we try to let everyone have their say about the way they want to live and the activities they take part in.

Life at Harton Grange Care Home

Building the new pizza oven

Yesterday we had a very busy day. We are proud of ourselves that we helped Neil to build our pizza oven.... Yes, indeed, a pizza oven, made from sand and clay.

We hope that this project will bring a lot of fun and....pizza and bread in our activities. It is not ready yet, but it will be very soon....( oh, a lot of work...)

Thank you so much Jos from Equal Arts for all your support and passionate work.

Greenfingers

We are proud to let you know that our activities have now extended and we'll use not only the clay oven, but also what we'll get from our raised beds. We have planted herbs and we also intend to plant some seeds to grow delicious vegetable.

We want to thanks to Jos from Equal Arts, our fantastic management team Judith and Beverly; also to Neil, the most clever master, our master chef Joy, and Claire who dealt with all paper work required.

Many thanks to artist Caroline for her donation of seeds.

A trip to the Roman Fort

We had another beautiful day out. We visited Arbeia Museum (the Roman Fort) in South Shields, we met a few children from Bright Future and had ice cream.   The children gave to our residents a few drawings representing roman fashion and we offered them some puzzles.

And, of course, we had fun and laughter on a summer day like this.....

Cuddles galore

We are very lucky to have been gifted two wonderful "Hug Bears" through a kind donation.

These bears cuddle you and they have a beating heart. They bring comfort to residents who are upset, anxious and to anyone who needs a hug!

Our carer, Krystal was one of the first to receive a cuddle along with resident, Judith.

A trip to Souter Lighthouse

Harton Grange residents had a great time out and exploring the local area!  We visited Souter Lighthouse and after learning so much history about this bright guardian of the coast, we went for lunch at the Grannie Annie's Pub & Pantry.....

It was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and everyone is looking forward to the next trip out.

Opera delight

Our homes had a fabulous time with the talented soprano Astrid Joos from Street Theatre.  Astrid spoke about a selection of famous operas and our residents were treated to performances of wonderful arias from operas well-known to all, such as ‘Giuditta’, ‘Don Giovanni’ and ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’.

It was a lovely experience, truly enjoyed by all.
