Activities at Beeston View Memory Lane Community

Activities are an integral part of life at our care home. We want to ensure that the people we support have as much fun as possible during their time with us, so it’s important that our activities programme is created with the interests of residents in mind. Our skilled Activities Coordinators bring a certain uniqueness to the home that can’t be found anywhere else, and which is reflected in the activities they organise.

Luisa Painemilla

Activities Coordinator

Hi there, I'm Luisa, Activities Co-ordinator at Iddenshall Hall.

I have worked with the elderly over 8 years and also for fifteen years in the social field as an Activities Coordinator for different social groups in three countries. I have a Degree in Social Integration, a Certificate in Theatrical Psychology and a Music Therapy certificate. In the past I have worked for local authorities and in a cerebral palsy home.

My work is very rewarding and it is a pleasure planning events and activities each month. I enjoy interacting with Residents and learning about their interests, preferences and experiences.

Look out for our activities and events - you are welcome to join us!

Interactive Pet

Interactive Pet

We have a new interactive pet at Beeston View. This week Charlie arrived and the residents have been interacting really well with him. He has been named Charlie by one of our residents, who spent over an hour interacting with him, stroking him and talking to him.

Charlie is amazing, he rolls over, purrs, meows and licks his paws. The more you interact with him the more you get back. A wonderful addition to our home.

Little Beats

We invite a local toddler group to come and hold their 'Music & Movement' class with our Residents once a month. The group, 'Little Beats', consists of children up to the age of 5, who come along with their parents and sing and perform to some of their favourite songs.

This has been a huge success with our residents on our dementia nursing unit; so many of them were smiling from ear to ear by the end of the session.

We look forward to this becoming a regular fixture on our schedule here at Beeston View.

Cake Decorating

One of our regular volunteers, Jean, hosts a monthly cake decorating session with residents of Beeston View. Jean bakes all the cakes at home in her own time and then brings them in for our residents to decorate themselves.

Residents really enjoy getting creative and doing their own designs. They then get to share and enjoy the fruits of their labour for afternoon tea. Our staff at Beeston View each get a cake of their own to enjoy too!

Pimp My Zimmer

Beeston View has hosted a project which is designed to help elderly people recognise their walking frames. Its impact is proven to reduce falls by up to 60%. It is claimed that adding more colour and vibrancy to grey walking frames helps people to recognise their own frame and also allows people with dementia to more easily pick out their frame, meaning they are being used where they might otherwise not be. Recent research has indicated that access and mobility equipment needs to be appealing to elderly and disabled people, else it is not used as much.

Staff, residents and guests all enjoyed being involved in the 'Pimp My Zimmer' process. Residents were able to personalise their own frames by choosing colours and designs. Each frame was also personalised with their name.

This project was carried out by Vivienne from Age UK Cheshire, and she said: “We are a local charity working in the community to support older people, their families and carers. We want everyone to be able to love later life.”

The Magic Table

We’ve installed a wonderful new piece of equipment at Beeston View recently: the Magic Table, which has been set up in our upstairs unit.

This is a new interactive light game for residents with mid-to-late stage dementia. It is already having a significant impact on the daily lives of our residents. It’s nice to see engagement and eyes lighting up.

The table was developed in the Netherlands and has taken the region by storm. Launched only in March 2015, there are already 500 Magic Tables installed in care homes in the Benelux countries. It got its name from someone with dementia who announced when trying it that. “this is a magic table”.

The Magic Table now consists of a portable white box hung from a hook in the ceiling projecting interactive images on to any surface below.
