Women who drink every day 'more likely to age successfully'

Enjoying an alcoholic drink or two each day may be beneficial to the health of older women, who could be using assisted living.

Research published in journal PLoS Medicine revealed that women who enjoyed a pint of beer, glass of wine or a single spirit each night were more likely be in good health at the age of 70 than heavier drinkers or those who did not drink alcohol.

Women in their mid-50s who drank 15 to 30g of alcohol per day had a 28 per cent greater chance of successful ageing than those who did not drink.

Furthermore, those who spread their alcohol consumption throughout the week were seen to have almost double the chance of reaching the landmark age without developing serious conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Meanwhile, research published in journal Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment reported that moderate consumption of alcohol could stave off the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
