Walk to reduce breast cancer risk

Walking can reduce the risk of breast cancer in women, according to health experts.

With more than one third of all cancers diagnosed each year in the UK caused by smoking, unhealthy diets, alcohol and excess weight, experts are claiming that light cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, could reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer.

Dr Marilyn Glenville, a leading nutritionist specialising in women's health and founder of marilynglenville.com, explained: "Putting on 1.5 stone after menopause increases breast cancer risk by 18 per cent."

"Walking for just half an hour a day has been shown to halve the risk of developing breast cancer," she continued.

One large study of over 200,000 women also found that all types of exercise cut the risk of breast cancer.

Furthermore, reducing alcohol intake to no more than one unit a day will help to prevent breast cancer.

Getting more vitamin D, eating less red meat and increasing fruit and vegetable intake is also recommended by Dr Glenville to keep bodies healthy.
