Tameside residents at highest risk of heart disease

People in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester are the most likely to suffer from heart disease, a new research has found.

Studies conducted by the British Heart Foundation found that those living in that part of the country had a death rate of 132 per 100,000 people. That's three times greater than people living in the affluent London suburbs of Chelsea and Kensington.

The areas with the second and third highest rates of heart disease were found to be Ballymoney in Northern Ireland and Glasgow, with death rates of 129 and 128 per 100,000 people respectively.

Professor Peter Weissberg, the British Heart Foundation's medical director, said coronary heart disease remains the biggest killer in the UK, but it's impact really should not be dictated by postcode.

"We urgently need the nation to unite behind our quest to fund research to eradicate this deadly disease wherever it strikes," he added.

Despite the study's findings, deaths from heart attacks have fallen in the past three years.
