Swedish study links vitamin B to dementia

A new study conducted by scientists from Sweden has again linked a deficiency of vitamin B with the development of Alzheimer's disease.

According to an article in the journal Neurology, the research established that low levels of vitamin B12 result in a greater risk of developing this particular type of dementia.

The scientists from the Karolinska Institute observed blood samples from more than 271 people to come to these conclusions.

Reacting to the news, the Alzheimer's Society commented that it was important to note that this was not a clinical trial.

The chief executive of the Alzheimer's Research Trust, Rebecca Wood, agreed that people should not stock up on B vitamins just yet, but a healthy lifestyle can help to reduce dementia risk.

She added: "The strongest evidence we have for reducing dementia risk is to eat a healthy balanced diet, take moderate exercise, and keep cholesterol and blood pressure in check, particularly in mid life."
