Survey shows support for health bill among patients

Patients want more control over their NHS care, a new independent survey has revealed.

The patient survey, conducted on behalf of the Department of Health, claims that over 80 per cent of patients want more choice over how and where they are treated in the NHS.

"The NHS should be there to serve patients and the public - not vested interests," stated health secretary Andrew Lansley.

"That’s why we're modernising the NHS and improving patient choice," he continued.

Last week prime minister David Cameron defended the controversial health and social care bill that will give patients greater choice in their NHS services.

Mr Cameron acknowledged the reservations of many healthcare professionals but stated that the reforms were vital to strengthen the commission of NHS services, increase accountability, liberate provision of NHS services, strengthen public health services and reform healthcare providers.
