Study shows new approach to dementia therapy

A scientific study has revealed a new approach is being taken to Alzheimer's disease research.

Researchers from the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases have identified a "target molecule" which they believe plays a key role in the build up of amyloid protein in the brain.

Clumps or "plaques" of this protein have been established as a primary cause of the nerve cell loss associated with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Dr Stefan Lichtenthaler and his team believe that these plaques can be prevented by increasing the work of a particular enzyme.

The study leader explained: "If that is the case, stimulating ADAM10 could be an important mechanism for therapy.

"But our antibodies also open up new possibilities for diagnosing and preventing the disease."

According to the Alzheimer's Society, the number of people in the UK living with some form of dementia will increase to more than one million by the year 2025.
