Study finds CVD risk is 50%

New research has claimed that an individual has a 50 per cent chance of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) at some point in their lives.

The study also found that even those who have an optimal risk factor profile have a 30 per cent chance of being affected by CVD.

Dr John Wilkins of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, found lifetime risks for total CVD were high regardless of index age.

"Achieving older age free of total CVD does not guarantee escape from remaining lifetime risk for total CVD," said the authors in the report.

Data collected by the study found that 1.7 per cent to 7.9 per cent of individuals were in the all optimal risk factor group.

A study conducted by researcher Amy Huebschmann of the University of Colorado School of Medicine recently noted premature cardiovascular aging caused by type 2 diabetes can be eased by taking exercise.
