Soy protein 'positive for heart health' in older women

Consuming soy protein could be good for the arteries of older women, who may soon be looking to find a care home, research has indicated.

A study, published in journal Stroke, revealed that soy protein reduced the progression of clogged arteries in women who were within five years of the menopause.

The progression rate of carotid artery intima-media thickness was observed to be on average 16 per cent lower in the group taking soy protein, compared to the placebo group.

However, in those who had experienced menopause within the past five years, isolated soy protein consumption was a significant 68 per cent reduction in progress.

This could cut heart disease risk in older women.

Researcher Elaine Krul noted: "The high compliance suggests that the clinical study products ... were very palatable and were not associated with any significant adverse effects as confirmed by the data."

In other news, a study published in the British Medical Journal has found that menopausal hormones do not increase the risk of death from cardiovascular conditions, contrary to the results of previous research.
