RoSPA: Age should not restrict driving

People should not be restricted from driving because of their age, one leading expert is claiming.

Kevin Clinton, head of road safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) explained that "there isn't an age at which all drivers become unable to drive safely".

This statement follows the release of a report by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), which calls for a new strategy to ensure safe mobility for an ageing population.

RoSPA has stated that an arbitrary age limit at which people must meet new criteria, such as retaking their driving test, is "unfair" to older adults.

However, Mr Clinton acknowledges that age can affect the faculties that are key to driving, such as eyesight and hearing.

"RoSPA therefore encourages all drivers to take regular driving assessments and refresher training," he said.

Regular eye tests are also important for all drivers, to ensure that they meet the relevant vision requirements.
