Red wine ingredient 'stops growth of breast cancer'

An ingredient in red wine could be used to treat breast cancer, a new study shows, which could be useful for people with the condition using assisted living.

Resveratrol, which is found in red wine, may stop the growth of breast cancer, according to research published in the FASEB Journal.

The ingredient blocks the growth of oestrogen to block its growth effects on cancer.

As resveratrol inhibits the proliferation of hormone resistant breast cancer cells, it is thought it could combat progression of the tumour.

Journal editor Gerald Weissmann said that while the findings are "exciting", people should not start using red wine or resveratrol supplements as a breast cancer treatment.

"What it does mean, however, is that scientists haven't finished distilling the secrets of good health that have been hidden in natural products such as red wine," he continued.

This follows research published in journal Atherosclerosis which revealed that having a glass of wine every night is healthier than indulging in several drinks on one night of the week.
