New tool may help doctors diagnose cancer

A new computer-based tool could speed up the diagnosis and prognosis of cancer, according to a new study.

The algorithm has been successfully proven to identify those suffering with gastro-oesophageal cancer and lung cancer by highlighting potentially worrying combinations of symptoms and risk factors.

Professor Julia Hippisley, lead researcher on the project at Nottingham University, stated: “Earlier diagnosis of cancer is a major challenge and we hope this new research will help doctors identify patients for earlier referral and investigation.”

The tool currently works as a series of two simple web calculators, which are designed for use by doctors. However, it may also be made available on the internet to raise awareness among the general public.

Timely and accurate cancer diagnosis is vital to increase a patient's chances of survival and ensure that they have access to the right treatments.
