New calming room 'helps treat depression'

A new calming room has been opened on the Isle of Man specifically designed to help with the rehabilitation and relaxation of mental health patients.

The room, which has been opened in the Braddan Hospital Department of Rehabilitation and Recovery Service, is equipped with a range of stimulus and therapeutic apparatus that can be arranged to meet specific patients' needs.

Funding from the Ballamona Association for Mental Health has enabled the room to be built, which can be used to help people suffering from depression and anxiety to become skilled at keeping calm.

Isle of Man minister for social care Martyn Quayle explained: "I would like to thank the Ballamona Association for Mental Health for its generous donation to fund the Calming Room and for its continued support to our service users.

"This support is particularly appreciated in the current difficult financial times for government."

Recent research indicates that even brief treatment may ease depression in mothers during and after the postpartum period.

The study, published in the American Academy of Pediatrics, underlines the importance of identifying problems early.
