MPs warned that ESA 'is failing the most vulnerable'

Every single MP and MSP is to be sent a dossier which highlights what impact the "flawed" Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) is having on their constituents.

A campaign by Citizens Advice Scotland (CAS) wants to raise awareness of the fact that people with chronic conditions such as Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis are being let down by the system, according to the Herald.

In the Comprehensive Spending Review, the government announced that people would only be able to claim ESA for a maximum of one year, unless they were "severely disabled".

This announcement attracted criticism from Parkinson's UK, which claimed that people with fluctuating chronic conditions would lose out.

The CAS agrees, and now it has sent out documents illustrating just how bad the problem is.

"We are still seeing case after case across Scotland where people are being found fit for work even though their illness or disability restricts them from any type of work. ESA isn't working for the most vulnerable," CAS acting chief executive Susan McPhee told the publication.
