More attention should be paid to positive care stories, Barchester founder says

Mike Parsons, founder and chief executive officer of Barchester Healthcare, has welcomed a new paper highlighting the positive aspects of care in the UK.

The research, by Graham Mulley, Emeritus Professor of elderly care at the University of Leeds, said that the media should report on success stories in long term care, as well as failures.

Mr Parsons commented: "He's right to point out how good most residential care is generally - and how much it has improved over recent years, too."

In his article, published in the British Medical Journal, Graham Mulley noted that the latest Care Quality Commission found 86 per cent of homes looking after residents supported by local councils to be "good" or "excellent".

Meanwhile, just one per cent of these homes were rated "poor" in the report.

However, these results received little attention in the media, points out the professor, as newspapers tend to hone in on negative situations arising in long term care.
