Govt must 'pre-empt' obesity

The government must do more to stop obesity before it happens, according to one industry expert.

Tam Fry, spokesman for the National Obesity Forum, claims that instead of introducing measures to help those already overweight and obese get back to a healthy weight, the problem must be pre-empted.

"What we have not done is to spend or to focus sufficient resources into preventing obesity taking place," he said.

This means making sure that all food available is as healthy as possible and physical activity is encouraged.

To ensure this occurs, a change of mindset is needed in the general population and the government can play a key role in bringing this about.

Such a reformation of attitudes towards obesity will be vital in reducing incidences of illness in the UK population.

Numerous studies have linked being overweight to common and fatal health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, and even stroke.
