"Absolutely disgusted since Barchester took over. The room and toilet are filthy! When I took Dad out this week, I took photographic evidence. Dad never had his clothes and always someone else's. Dad's new clothes were "lost". I lost a lot of money. Dad's fingernails are always filthy and long. Dad has lost over two stone, looks awful, dirty, thin and uncared for."

"All the staff have played an important part in keeping my mum safe and well during these difficult times. We first want to thank them all for all their care and kindness. It means the world."

"Mum has only been at Hampton Grove for 4 months but appears happy and settled. It's a credit to the staff how they have coped during this difficult lockdown period. My sister and I have been able to visit Mum in the pod which has been great and the staff have been very accommodating in fitting us in, for that we are very grateful, thank you. Knowing mum is safe and being looked after is a huge relief. The outside needs a tidy-up."

"Obviously, during the pandemic, it has been difficult to really give a well-informed opinion of the overall facilities and care. From the good rapport, my mum has with the carers that I have seen I am pleased that she is comfortable in their care. I hope soon that hairdressing will resume and other activities to raise my mums' interest. A little disappointed that we can only have one visit a week at the moment and it can be difficult sometimes to speak to mum on the phone."

"This review is having to be done during Covid restrictions so for me personally. I have not been inside the care home since the first lockdown, so I cannot technically say truly what the rooms and inside are like. I would however like to say I'm very impressed with the Pod rooms available to us and the staff have been and are excellent. As a family were are happy that our relative has been kept safe during this awful pandemic."

"The staff at Hampton Grove are splendid and I have every confidence that they have my mothers best interests at heart and they look after her very well. However, the external garden space is not well maintained and needs attention."

"The new visiting system to enable a bedroom visit after a lateral flow test is a great improvement, enabling me to hold Mum's hands at last, which she finds so much better. The Activities Team staff that help supervise these indoor visits have been so caring and helpful, understanding what is in the best interests of the residents with dementia like Mum. Thank you so much."

"It is with regret that this will be my last review as my mum passed away last weekend, but I just wanted to say one last time what a great home this is and my mum was looked after brilliantly. All the staff knew my mum and us as a family and for the last five and a half years all I have is praise for each and every one of the staff. They became part of our family too, it's been a tough year with covid but even though I couldn't see mum I knew she was well-loved and cared for. Thank you."

"Unfortunately mum passed away on 16th January, peaceful and in no pain. Her time in Hampton Grove Care Home was happy, respected and well cared for. The staff are a major factor as they are all brilliant and a great credit to the company. Thank you for looking after mum for the last five and a half years."

"Throughout the pandemic, the care home and staff have as always been excellent. It's a great comfort to know my mum is safe in such uncertain times. Since lockdown 2, they have had indoor pods enabling me to still visit. I can' thank the home enough fo this. To remain Covid free is exceptional, well-done team."

"My father was at Hampton Grove for many years, staff were all excellent. My father couldn't have any better care in such a lovely, clean home. He was happy here for so many years, and management was so kind to us with his passing. Would highly recommend this home to other families looking."

"The new 'visiting pod' indoors is a great facility and enables me to see Mum safely and in the warm. Sadly we cannot yet old hands or hug, but Hampton Grove staff go out of their way to make it as happy an experience as possible. I am eternally grateful to all of the staff for looking after Mum so well."

"Barchester Hampton Grove is an excellent care home. The home itself is finished to a high standard and is very welcoming. My mother has been very well looked after since moving in a year ago. The staff and carers are doing a fantastic job despite the current Covid19 pandemic."

"It's taken a while but I'd like to thank on behalf of our family all the staff and management at Hampton Grove for their outstanding care of my mum in the last few months of her life. They took in a very poorly and confused elderly lady in the middle of a global pandemic and gave her the love and security that she needed, and made her feel safe and looked after. At the end of her life, they were very compassionate and supportive to us and helped us to cope with such a difficult time. We can't really thank any of them enough."

"My mother has been in this care home since August 2016. The team on floor 3 have cared for mum with dignity and kindness. Any concerns we have, have been dealt with immediately and checked by the home manager who is in my opinion excellent. Since COVID hit the home has been superb and now pod visits are available it's been fab to see her. The staff are kind and respectful. Thank you for everything."

"My mother has lived at Hampton Grove for six and a half years. Throughout this time, all of the staff or maintenance, activity organisers or managers have been unfailingly kind and caring towards all of the residents. In recent months they have done whatever they can to maintain contact in very difficult circumstances. I have no hesitation in recommending the home."

Judy Scarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5

"As we are unable to enter the care home to visit mums room, I am sure the itemised list still remains as it was when we could see for ourselves. The standard the home gives is excellent (just a little freshening up of rooms would be suggested, as they do look rather tied). All the staff I encounter on my visit are very professional and caring. A very homely feel to the home and I deeply appreciate all the hard work carried out by all the staff. Thank you, does not seem enough."

"As we cannot go into the home it's hard to do a review. But all the staff are very good and care for him. We have had garden visits and he comes out and is always smart and tidy. Now is the time we worry about coming to see him as it is too cold outside for him. My mum is in assisted living and has a flat with care but it is too cold to bring her now at 93 years old."

J Mcarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5

"My mum has to have temporary care whilst her husband was in hospital due to her having vascular dementia. Whenever I visited Hampton Grove or rang the staff were so friendly and kind. If my mum ever had to permanently go into a nursing/care home I would only choose Hampton Grove."

You have all done a fantastic job over this hard time. Thank you for taking such good care of our mum. It must be really hard trying to keep them amused. Mum seems quite happy. "It is a hard time as visits are restricted. Staff are amazing, happy, friendly and helpful with queries always followed up. Hopefully, winter visits will be in a covered area as it's disappointing when visits are cancelled, especially as it's once a week for 30 minutes, for which we are grateful. Thank you for the care and kindness shown to Mum."

S Wcarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5

"Hampton Grove/Barchester have worked really hard to create an indoor visiting room. I had a visit with my mum at the pod on Tuesday and I must say it was really well done. Mum looked comfortable and warm. The intercom system worked well, we could hear each other clearly. Mum took to the new visiting arrangements in good spirits. This is going to be a great facility for all the residents and families. They even decorated it well, ready for Halloween."

"The staff are wonderful and coping extremely well with these awful conditions. My mother-in-law is being looked after exceptionally well and is looking really well on the few times we are able to see her. "My father went to Hampton Grove for respite to give my mum a break. He walked into the care home walking and talking but came out in a wheelchair and has never been able to talk to us again and an ambulance had to be called when we got him home. He was admitted to hospital with a bad UTI which had been undetected by the care home. During his two weeks stay, he had two falls, having never fallen over at home at all since his dementia diagnosis or stroke. We struggled to get any details of what happened and what injuries he had, communication within the care home team was very poor and also communication to my mother. I had to call a meeting with the assistant manager to get some kind of answers which she was reluctant to have and during that meeting it became pretty apparent how bad communication was. Once we got my father's belongings back, quite a few items of clothing were and still are missing but to our horror in his case were items including medication belonging to other people."

Louise Hcarehome.co.uk rating: 1.83 out of 5

"Do not use this company. My 98 yr old father stayed here for one week and really did not enjoy the experience. He said that no one talked to him, so our explanation that he was profoundly deaf, was ignored. On collecting him all his clothes were in the laundry, even though we had expressly said not to wash them, and I was told that they could not retrieve his clothes for 5 days! I made a complaint in person and was not offered anything but apologies, even though we had to buy extra clothes for him in the interim. We had him booked for a haircut and they couldn't even manage to get him to that, they forgot..... When we got him home his speech was slurred due to lack of fluids, which took days to reverse, our doctor had to put him on hydration medication! I hate to think what state he would have been in after 2 weeks. We felt so guilty that we had left our lovely, frail dad, with people who just care about the numbers. I'm sure this is down to poor management."

"Although due to the coronavirus lockdown we have been unable to see my mother, I have been impressed with the response from the staff. We have been doing 'Whatsapp' calls with my mum, who seems to be in a good state of mind and is constantly reassure by the staff when she becomes upset about her situation. She seems to be well-fed and cared for."

"My nan was transferred to Hampton Grove after a fall at home amidst the covid pandemic, so it has been extremely stressful for our family, but after a shaky start with the reception team (I had the phone put down on me after enquiring about visitation, sounded like he was too busy to talk to me) The care team and entertainments staff have been amazing! My nan seems fairly happy (Which is a miracle in itself) I would like to say a special thank you to the lady who works with my nan as she has gone above and beyond for her."

"Hampton Grove was Mum's happy, caring home for the last 20-months. Although quite a private person, Mum made lovely new friends with both residents and carers and enjoyed activities such a char aerobics, cake decorating and crafts. I could call or visit whenever I wanted and was always welcomed and brought up to date with and medical needs etc. They really upped their game during the covid pandemic, quickly locking down the home, wearing PPE and having staff and residents tested. They also found ways to continue the activity programme without outside help. I have already recommended Hampton Grove to others. Thanks for all your hard work and best wishes to all the team."

"The staff is excellent. Dad is happy and safe and cared for. The cleaners have not been the best but I know management is aware. The activities team is fabulous. The rooms I think need refurbing and for the money we pay, this should be done. The carpets and decoration are tired and dirty, curtains, etc and surely a large TV could be fitted."

"Since my mother entered the care home in 2014 she has been well looked after by a caring and well-managed staff. She wasn’t the easiest person to look after but the staff were always on hand to deal with any issues that she had. After five and a half years of living there, we have to say that we were confident that she was happy and well treated. We visited every week she was there and got to know the staff really well. They were always very polite and professional and I will miss our weekly catch-ups. I would definitely recommend to anybody who was thinking of sending a relative to a care home to Avery House/Hampton Grove."

"On arriving at the home I am always greeted by a smiling friendly face on the reception desk. All the carers and staff are friendly and helpful no matter what time I arrive or contact the home. My husband settled quite quickly in the home, enjoys his meals and although a shy man, is joining in with the activities. He thinks he is at work so likes being given little tasks to do, which makes him feel valued."

She has had spells in hospital since but with the dedication and care of the staff, together with Mum's stoic attitude, she has pulled back from the brink. "My mother came to Avery House on 30th November last year, originally for 2 weeks respite. She has been very happy at Avery and I have been more than happy with everything. The place itself and also the staff are excellent. The only reason I am moving my mother is because I live in Stamford, Lincolnshire and I'm finding the journey too much as I don't drive and have numerous illnesses myself. If it wasn't for this, my mum would be staying at Avery House."

She is happy too and as I live a long way away this is a great comfort to me. The home and staff are welcoming and the staff always find time to update me as to how my mum is. I cannot thank them enough."

"My mother has been a permanent resident here for just over two years, and as neither my sister nor myself live close by, I am totally dependent upon the carers and administration staff for all aspects of my mother’s wellbeing; a task that they perform admirably. They are all friendly, caring, efficient and good communicators, and I know they will always contact me if there is anything she needs. I am, therefore, confident that my mother is in capable hands."

"I believe it would be very difficult to find another care home where residents could have better care. Any needs are attended to promptly and staff are cheerful and friendly. Their attitude towards relatives is first class. Any concerns are always discussed and satisfactory outcomes achieved. If my husband was not happy there I would know just by looking at him! The leadership of the management team permits through all departments."

"Welcome - first class, better than any other I have encountered. Staff generally caring, although some will rise to provocation - only human, focus on dementia. Activities treated as a priority - not as an optional extra as elsewhere. Any below standard staff do not last long. Comprehensive training, some of which I have experienced in my capacity as a volunteer with the activities team. Management team - very strong, there is not one of them I wouldn't have employed myself when in business."

The home is managed very professionally and take great care to make sure all the resident's needs are met and also have time for the families at all times. My mum has settled very well here after trying two other homes who couldn't meet her needs. The care here is so good. I have already put my name down for a room when I am ready, Seriously."

"Avery House has a lovely setting and within a dedicated team of carers plus all of the other roles - managers, administrators, activities people, housekeepers, catering and maintenance staff - whose work is vital to provide a safe, secure and welcoming home for elderly people. It is a fairly large home which affords a highly-developed organisation but it still has a warm feel to it because the staff are friendly, and as it has four floors, each floor is like a little home in itself. I've always observed that residents are treated with warmth and dignity and I know that my mother is well looked after here."

"My mother-in-law moved into this care home in September. Before that she was in hospital for 10 days, previously having lived in her own home with carers attending. The team at this care home were excellent in the way they came to the hospital to assess Mum and explained all the procedures very clearly when my wife and I previously visited the care home. The transfer by the NHS was smooth and the welcome at the home was comforting and well carried out. Mum has a lovely light room and has settled in well with excellent support from all the staff. This move has taken a lot of stress out of our lives."

"My great aunt moved from her home of 50 years into Avery House Care home in May 2017. This was a huge lifestyle change and initially, she was upset as she could no longer live independently. The management and staff were extremely kind, caring and welcoming and this gave us (her family) huge comfort knowing she would receive the care and attention she required. The facilities and room were homely, clean and a very high standard. Unfortunately, my aunt died of a heart attack in September 2017 and the kindness, support and care they gave not only to my aunt but the family, went above and beyond expectations. They are simply amazing."

In the time he has been here he has become part of a friendly and supportive community which has helped restore his quality of life, I would not trust his care to just anyone and searched for a while to find the right place for him. "Avery House has been a lifesaver for my father and me. Following a stroke, he was withdrawn, not getting out of bed or washing (even with carers) while living in his own home. Once in Avery, he was helped out of bed in the mornings. He is clean and happy. He is well fed and can mix with others though chooses often to eat in his room. He is helped with all daily activities. The staff are very caring and compassionate, despite my father having some inappropriate behaviour. The home is well run. Every one smiles and chats when I visit (daily). My only negative points are it is quite expensive compared to some other homes. But are they as good as Avery?"

The receptionist was very courteous and helpful, the members of staff I found equally helpful. The home is kept immaculately clean and up to date with its decor, my sister-in-law's room on the ground floor overlooks a beautiful garden through her patio doors. "Avery House has restored my faith in residential care. My mother who suffers from Alzheimers was initially admitted for emergency respite care when my father was hospitalised but is now permanent. I have been impressed with the very good care shown as well as the approachability and friendliness of staff who listen and try to accommodate clients' needs. Medical care has been good and appropriate. My father is now also in residential care at Avery House, initially for respite following his hospitalisation, but has now requested to stay and he really likes it there. It was a welcome surprise to be invited for a care review for both parents to discuss any concerns or issues I might have had. I was also grateful of the offer of an escort for a hospital appointment. For me the only improvement is that there seems to be a loss of personal clothing through the laundry process. I have been a carer from afar and wish I could find somewhere equivalent on the South Coast closer to my home."

"My wife was a resident of Avery House for five months until January 2017. She has Alzheimers and has difficulty in communicating her needs. The management and staff managed her difficulties with care and imagination and were always ready to chat and distract her if she was agitated or upset, over and above what was expected. Any problems were dealt with immediately. There was always a friendly welcome and I felt she was in a safe, secure environment. She was settled, enjoyed the activities. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated to a point where she had to leave for a more suitable environment. Many thanks to Avery House."
