What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"I find the home very friendly and homely. Staff are kind, always say 'hello' whenever you meet any staff members. I am very pleased with the way they are caring for my father-in-law."

"The home is very homely. The members of staff are all very friendly and all say hello when they see you and have a laugh and a joke with you and Dad which creates a good atmosphere. The girls all wave when they pass Dad's room and speak to him. The nurses are very helpful and answer any questions about Dad. Also, the lads that bring the drinks trolley round are very friendly and helpful."

"I found all staff including doctors, nurses, carers, cleaners, helpers and even the chef very friendly and helpful at all times. I've felt my dad has been in good hands and have never felt worried for his care. Everybody has been loving and thoughtful."

"My husband recently spent two weeks in Barchester Challoner House Care Home for end of life care. Although his stay was short I cannot fault the care he received. All the staff were so kind and helpful, nothing was too much trouble, no problem unsolvable. The care and compassion shown to both my husband and myself were first rate and I shall always be grateful to all concerned. I would wholeheartedly recommend Challoner to anyone seeking a safe, kind and caring environment for a loved one."

"There still seems to be an issue with the quality of food. Mum often says the meat isn't good quality and the food presentation could be improved. I know it must be difficult to cater for 50+ people but perhaps some discussion is needed!"

"Care home - five star hotel. They treat you as one big family. If you have a problem any of the staff always have time to listen and put your mind at ease. Well done management, what a team."

"Mother was found a place at very short notice in July when her former care home closed without adequate warning. She was 102. When she had settled down, she told me that this was the best thing that I had ever done for her, Finally, her age and frailty caught up with her and an ACP (Anticipatory Care Process) was instigated. The senior nurses at the home were excellent talking me through the inevitable and what to expect with their prime concern to keep Mother comfortable. They had a great liaison with her new GP who seemed to be fully aware of everything that was happening. At 3.20 a.m. on a Sunday, a Senior called to say that she had passed away. The ACP had included instructing an undertaker so there was nothing for me to do. Nobody likes to think about End of Life care. I echo Mother's words. Moving her to Challoner was the best thing we could have done for all of us."

"In the few years that Daddy spent at the care home, he became a favourite with some of the carers. He was a bit of a joker in his day and the staff always joined in. All the staff were professional and they took the time to answer queries. Bless you, for your patience and commitment. Thank you."

"My husband was transferred to Challoner House from Winchester Hospital in January 2022. He had bladder cancer and needed end of life care. He was only here for one week before he died, but the excellent care he received and the kind caring manner of all the staff here have made the world of difference. Just knowing he passed away in such a nice peaceful place, surrounded by caring people has made an awful situation much more bearable to come to terms with. Both myself and his family can't thank everyone enough for the care he received and also for the kindness shown towards us."

"It was a very sad day when my husband and I decided he could no longer live at home. We could not wish for a better home from home. The staff go out of their way to please - both resident and relative. Although I miss my husband desperately it is a great comfort to know he is so well cared for."

"My parents have been residents at Challoner House for five months. The care they have received has been excellent. The nursing staff and carers are true professionals; they have met my parents needs head-on. My father suffered a stroke and has dementia; he has been given excellent care with all personal needs and treated with respect. My mother has cancer, all her needs have been met with care and humour. The staff have lept their morale up during this difficult Covid time. I have visited when allowed and have been reassured of all the Covid measures in place to keep my parents safe. The staff have been very supportive during what has been a stressful time for all of us. I cannot recommend Challoner House enough - first class. Thank you."

"A short while ago my sister was brought here both legs heavily bandaged leaking water and some blood. Very painful arthritis in her arms. Now she is bandage free in both legs and her legs are 100% better. I would say a magic wand was waved but I know it is due to the care and time spent with her that achieved her situation now. Many thanks to all the staff from her very grateful sister."

"Under very difficult circumstances, Challoner has dealt with the covid situation very well. The staff have remained cheerful and caring. My only complaint is weak communication as to the situation of another company taking over payment, and my mother has not been reimbursed."

"The home has looked after my father for nearly 2 years. All of the staff are friendly and the care is excellent. There is always a good range of activities for the residents which are tailored well to their needs. The nursing care is first class and the nurses knowledgeable and caring. My father has always been happy at Challoner. The administration has always been efficient and accurate, with any issues quickly sorted. Dad has always been listened to and any suggestions acted upon and sorted. He feels safe and looked after which is important for him and the family."

"Challoner House is a comfortable, attractive home with lovely gardens. According to my relative, food is a bit hit and miss. "Mum was admitted at the start of lockdown for two weeks' respite and has stayed ever since! "My friend has settled in so well and is content and happy. I understand she is socialising with other residents and staff. She really doesn't remember me, but as long as she is happy and content this gives me no cause for concern. She did remember me as a friend she sat next to me at church in due course."

"My mother was well looked after at Challoner House. The staff couldn't have been more kind and understanding to her. She was always treated with respect and dignity, and in this, her final month, her care was outstanding despite her considerable needs. Although the staff were extremely busy they always had time to chat to my mother, and were good friends to her and me. The home is beautifully furnished, the gardens are a constant joy, and there is always a delicious choice of food at meal times. The activities team have such a good rapport with the residents, and have a wide choice of activities. Thank you to everyone."

"When it became clear Mum wasn't looking after herself, I spoke to Challoner on the Tuesday and when I rang on the Thursday in rather a panic, they were able to accommodate her the next day. My experience of all the people who worked at Challoner was always very good. They treated Mum with care, kindness and patience which made a potentially worrying time much easier for us to cope with."

"With eyesight virtually down to zero, hardness of hearing and very reduced mobility, my friend's life was almost shut down. With strong Christian faith, she just wanted to go to be with the Lord. After fracturing her femur she spent a month in hospital and then she moved into Challoner House. Her comments have been 'I didn't know I could do that' (in the dining room for lunch), 'I think I would like to stay here', 'the staff are so kind and patient with these old ladies' (she is only 92!), 'I am going to all the activities I can'. Stimulation has given her a new lease of life!"

"No matter what the weather outside, it always feels warm and sunny in Challoner House. The dedicated staff are so welcoming, friendly and caring. They frequently go beyond the course of duty. Challoner House is a beautiful home in well-maintained grounds. There are plenty of activities and the staff help the residents to share in a good time, whatever the ability of the residents. My mother would love to have stayed in her home but thinks that Challoner House is the next best thing. She is well looked after and enjoys her meals. There are a varied menu and a good choice."

"Since my mother-in-law came for respite 2 weeks ago, we have noticed a great improvement in her. She is really happy and loves the place and staff. She looks better and says she feels well. The home appears to be really well managed and is spotlessly clean. When we visit all the staff are very friendly. We are hoping mum can stay here."

"Coffee and cakes were always available on arrival as a visitor and were much appreciated. The staff were always friendly and helpful. We moved Dad on the 9th August 2019 mainly because mum was being discharged from the hospital and they wanted to be together. The cost of Challoner House was not possible. Although the nursing home is very good we felt that they could manage to live in a care/residential house which saved them 50% of the cost at Challoner. Our aim is for mum and dad to return home soon and live out their remaining years with care at their home they have shared for 53 years."

"The garden and facilities are lovely and the staff friendly and very kind, but I have been very disappointed with some aspects of management, particularly on the nursing side and in respect of lost items. No inventory is taken nor any note made of items that have disappeared. It is often difficult to get things done - for example, it has taken weeks for my mother to have ear drops administered."

"My review is based on the care and support my family have had over the past three weeks whilst our mother has been in respite care. During this time the family have had to deal with many emotions in trying to get "our mum" to accept she is no longer safe to return home even with a care package in place. Throughout, mum has had first-class care and support as have we, her family. We know mum will be well looked after and safe in Barchester Challoner House Care Home. Thank you all."

"My father was admitted to Challoner in a very poor state, having suffered a fractured pelvis which left him unable to cope at home suffering a series of falls. Due to the excellent care from all the staff, he has made a remarkable recovery. All his sores have disappeared (due to his hospital stay), he is eating well and he has put on 10lbs in weight. I would highly recommend the home as there are plenty of staff who are very friendly and helpful. The quality and quantity of food is excellent and the activities and facilities are very good. More importantly, my father is happy there."

"My mother has been here for a year now and I have been very pleased that I chose this place. The staff are very friendly and kind and approachable. The food is good and the catering staff obliging. The building is clean and pleasant and the gardens are lovely. As in any institution, communication can be a problem but the staff have provided me with a notebook so that information, observations, requests or questions can be logged and not lost. Similarly, it would be nice if residents have a "named carer" who would pay particular attention to them and their situation."

"My mother has lived at Challoner House for a little over two years. The care that she receives is of a high standard. She is treated with respect, affection and admiration due to her great age of 101. My mother is a very private and independent lady which is respected by staff. Recently my mother-in-law also stayed at Challoner House for end of life care. My husband felt that he was well cared for as well as his mother. "I went into Challoner House after my husband's death, feeling very frail and unable to walk without help. I felt sick at the mention of food and had lost over a stone in a couple of weeks. I found the staff most sympathetic and helpful, day and night, so that after five weeks more or less I felt able to come to this place (extra care scheme), which is for people with some kind of disability, but basically able to look after themselves. However, if my condition (or either when my condition) deteriorates, I have asked my children to take me back to Challoner House."

"We knew Challoner House was the right nursing home for dad straight away after visiting. Dad has complex needs and Challoner House have done their upmost to care and look after him. All aspects of his care are excellent. Staff at Challoner House love their jobs and this shows through the excellent service. My dad would be the first to complain about anything if it wasn't right and I haven't heard a thing."

"Shortly after my review in September, my darling husband had a chest infection and died peacefully on the 1st of October. The care he received was brilliant, at the end I was holding him, the manager was monitoring his pulse and keeping me informed. The after care I have received has amazed me, when my time comes I hope I get the same love, care and attention that my darling husband received at Challoner House. I would like to thank ALL the staff, and a special thanks to the deputy manager who delivered a lovely tribute at my husbands funeral."

"The staff made my mum's last days comfortable. She was looked after with care and dignity, which is all one could wish for. A real home from home. Relatives were treated well and informed of care every step of the way."

"I had to find respite facility for my 92 year old mother for 12 months as the apartment she has just purchased wasn't ready. I have to confess I'd heard mixed reviews, however I kept an open mind as I knew there was a new manager on board. The care and consideration given to mum exceeded my expectations. We had an extremely warm welcome and because we were not sure how long mum would have to stay it was made clear from the outset that she was welcome to stay as long as she liked or was necessary. Thank you to all the staff you go that extra mile. Well done."

"My mother was diagnosed as terminal with a brain tumour but was not 'ill' enough to go to the local hospice. She required 24 hour personal care however, which I was not able to do on my own so I chose Challoner House, as it had all the personal and nursing care that would be needed as she deteriorated as well as a lively and cheerful atmosphere. From first to last (approx 10 weeks) every member of staff was fantastic. Mum was always comfortable, clean and entertained and I was also looked after on my mostly daily visits. When mum was still 'with it' she always said how lovely everyone was. What I was most grateful for was that I was called at night when her condition changed for the worse so I was able to be with her for her last few hours. I was treated with such respect and compassion. I can't thank all at Challoner House enough!"

"My mother is happy, safe and well cared for. She is encouraged to take part in activities and to walk in the beautiful gardens, which she does despite being 100+. I feel very lucky to have found Challoner house a year ago, also very grateful to all the staff."

"My mother has been a resident for only six weeks. Every time my brother and myself visit we always receive an extremely warm welcome from all of the staff no matter what designation, from carers to managers. We are always offered tea and cake (their speciality!) nothing is too much trouble for the staff. My mothers care is incredible every little thing is attended to especially by carers and night carer a particular favourite with my mother who always bring her a cup of tea in the early hours before she even asks for it!! The only minor detail is that breakfast is sometimes quite a late, but my mother does get up early, staff already think about that in providing a "goody box" for her to have with her early cup of tea. Beautiful new refurb like a five star hotel."

"Brilliant care from all at the home. We were astonished by the level of care and time provided. Great care was taken to treat dad well and with respect. Also, we as his family were cared for too. We were always kept in the picture regarding dad's situation. Can't praise Challoner House enough."

"My two weeks spent at Barchester Challoner House Care Home were lovely. The staff were most attentive to my special menu requirements (I am an insulin type 1 diabetic) It was a good holiday! Just what I needed after a month in the hospital."
