"Very caring staff giving mum the best care."

"Barchester Challoner House has provided a good support system for my grandmother and she is doing so much better now. She enjoys the activities, and the home has made efforts to help families visit/call during the difficulty lockdown period."
Abigail Jcarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5
"My husband has been very happy here for two years now. I have always found the staff to be very helpful and kind. The general manager is very efficient and will be always ready to discuss any issues we may have."

"My mother was well looked after at Challoner House. The staff couldn't have been more kind and understanding to her. She was always treated with respect and dignity, and in this, her final month, her care was outstanding despite her considerable needs. Although the staff were extremely busy they always had time to chat to my mother, and were good friends to her and me. The home is beautifully furnished, the gardens are a constant joy, and there is always a delicious choice of food at meal times. The activities team have such a good rapport with the residents, and have a wide choice of activities. Thank you to everyone."

"The staff and the place we first visited made us know that when Nan comes to the care home she would be treated the way we wanted and I would like to thank the management from the bottom of my heart. Thank you."
Heidi Jcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.92 out of 5
"When it became clear Mum wasn't looking after herself, I spoke to Challoner on the Tuesday and when I rang on the Thursday in rather a panic, they were able to accommodate her the next day. My experience of all the people who worked at Challoner was always very good. They treated Mum with care, kindness and patience which made a potentially worrying time much easier for us to cope with."
Sally Bcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.25 out of 5
"With eyesight virtually down to zero, hardness of hearing and very reduced mobility, my friend's life was almost shut down. With strong Christian faith, she just wanted to go to be with the Lord. After fracturing her femur she spent a month in hospital and then she moved into Challoner House. Her comments have been 'I didn't know I could do that' (in the dining room for lunch), 'I think I would like to stay here', 'the staff are so kind and patient with these old ladies' (she is only 92!), 'I am going to all the activities I can'. Stimulation has given her a new lease of life!"

"My friend is with you at the moment and I have noticed in only one week with you there is a vast improvement."
M Scarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5
"I have really enjoyed my stay here. The staff go beyond the call of duty. Nothing is too much trouble. The only negative comment I do have is there could be more handrails in the bathroom."
M Hcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.82 out of 5
"Helped my Nan settle in very well. Cannot fault the care she has been given and the encouragement she has been given."
G Hcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.58 out of 5
"Caring, friendly and very attentive. My room is very comfortable. The food is very good. All my needs are met. I enjoy having my hair done every week and my nails. I also enjoy the daily activities and interacting with the other residents."
B Scarehome.co.uk rating: 4.5 out of 5
"My Dad has really enjoyed his short stay here. He has been made to feel very welcome as I have. The staff are amazing. Nothing is too much trouble. Very kind and caring. The only negative point would be not enough grab rails in the bathroom."
Marion Mcarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5
"No matter what the weather outside, it always feels warm and sunny in Challoner House. The dedicated staff are so welcoming, friendly and caring. They frequently go beyond the course of duty. Challoner House is a beautiful home in well-maintained grounds. There are plenty of activities and the staff help the residents to share in a good time, whatever the ability of the residents. My mother would love to have stayed in her home but thinks that Challoner House is the next best thing. She is well looked after and enjoys her meals. There are a varied menu and a good choice."

"Staff, always pleasant and helpful. Good care with washing and dressing generally. Lovely cup of tea and cake. Food seems to be getting better with more variety and healthy options. The patient does not need nursing care but when there is anything wrong, a doctor is called promptly."

"Since my mother-in-law came for respite 2 weeks ago, we have noticed a great improvement in her. She is really happy and loves the place and staff. She looks better and says she feels well. The home appears to be really well managed and is spotlessly clean. When we visit all the staff are very friendly. We are hoping mum can stay here."
Jan Fcarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5
"Coffee and cakes were always available on arrival as a visitor and were much appreciated. The staff were always friendly and helpful. We moved Dad on the 9th August 2019 mainly because mum was being discharged from the hospital and they wanted to be together. The cost of Challoner House was not possible. Although the nursing home is very good we felt that they could manage to live in a care/residential house which saved them 50% of the cost at Challoner. Our aim is for mum and dad to return home soon and live out their remaining years with care at their home they have shared for 53 years."
Ray Pcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.75 out of 5

"Challoner House is one of the nicest care homes that we have ever seen, having a lovely setting and generally pleasing environment. All nursing staff, care staff and volunteers were very kind, professional and efficient. Cleanliness and food were outstanding. Residents were treated with great respect and understanding of individual needs."

"First class service. Very kind and caring."
Patricia Ncarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5
"The garden and facilities are lovely and the staff friendly and very kind, but I have been very disappointed with some aspects of management, particularly on the nursing side and in respect of lost items. No inventory is taken nor any note made of items that have disappeared. It is often difficult to get things done - for example, it has taken weeks for my mother to have ear drops administered."
Jenny Scarehome.co.uk rating: 3.33 out of 5
"My review is based on the care and support my family have had over the past three weeks whilst our mother has been in respite care. During this time the family have had to deal with many emotions in trying to get "our mum" to accept she is no longer safe to return home even with a care package in place. Throughout, mum has had first-class care and support as have we, her family. We know mum will be well looked after and safe in Barchester Challoner House Care Home. Thank you all."

"The care given to my sister by all of the Challoner staff was second to none. They cared for her with dignity and skill, thoughtfulness and compassion. Always respectful, they also supported us as a family. We were reassured that my sister was in safe and caring hands."

"Father has enjoyed his stay at Barchester Challoner House Care Home again. The staff are very friendly and make a fuss of him. Since the redecoration, the public rooms have a much lighter look and feel. Very nice."

P Dcarehome.co.uk rating: 3.83 out of 5
"Most of the time things run well, but recently they seem to have been short staffed - and that has meant a lower standard of service. In recent months I have raised concerns about the standard of care my mother has been receiving, but no response has been forthcoming. I'm hopeful that recent changes will lead to an improvement in the service."
B Scarehome.co.uk rating: 3.25 out of 5
"Lovely surroundings and nursing staff. Felt a little more communication from management once mum was admitted would have been helpful in order to smooth the settling in process. Food and housekeeping excellent and safe, warm and comfortable environment."
L Fcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.42 out of 5
"I think Challoner House is a good car home with plenty of entertainment. The only criticism I have is that my friend has been left with food uneaten as she cannot do it herself. Cold cups of tea etc."
E Scarehome.co.uk rating: 3.58 out of 5
"My PAT dog, Honey and I visit weekly. I am impressed by the warm welcome we receive from the staff and residents. Staff are always on hand if any questions need to be asked, I find them very helpful. The home is very neat and tidy and the daily programme board shows interesting activities."
Mary Mcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.3 out of 5
"My friend has been a resident for about three weeks and I have visited on four occasions so far. I have been impressed by the friendliness of all the staff and by the caring way that they are looking after my friend who needs a lot of care."
Christopher Bcarehome.co.uk rating: 5 out of 5
"My mother always speaks highly of the staff, but I have found communication difficult - finding out my mother's weight or blood sugar levels for example."
L Mcarehome.co.uk rating: 3.83 out of 5
"My father was admitted to Challoner in a very poor state, having suffered a fractured pelvis which left him unable to cope at home suffering a series of falls. Due to the excellent care from all the staff, he has made a remarkable recovery. All his sores have disappeared (due to his hospital stay), he is eating well and he has put on 10lbs in weight. I would highly recommend the home as there are plenty of staff who are very friendly and helpful. The quality and quantity of food is excellent and the activities and facilities are very good. More importantly, my father is happy there."
Bernice Acarehome.co.uk rating: 4.92 out of 5
"I go in as a volunteer most weeks. I spend time with the resident, painting nails when they have had their hair done by the hairdresser. Staff are always welcoming to me - even though it's only once a week. Always a pleasant atmosphere."

"There is a calm and friendly atmosphere. Carers are kind and helpful. It is easy to relax."

"Great attention is paid to me every need both mental and physical. Regular opportunities occur for residents to discuss with staff any complaints of any kind with regard to care, food or any difficulty."

"My mother has been here for a year now and I have been very pleased that I chose this place. The staff are very friendly and kind and approachable. The food is good and the catering staff obliging. The building is clean and pleasant and the gardens are lovely. As in any institution, communication can be a problem but the staff have provided me with a notebook so that information, observations, requests or questions can be logged and not lost. Similarly, it would be nice if residents have a "named carer" who would pay particular attention to them and their situation."
Jenny Scarehome.co.uk rating: 4.2 out of 5
"I have only had a two week respite stay but have been made very welcome and looked after well. Everyone is very friendly."
J Pcarehome.co.uk rating: 4.25 out of 5
"Since I have been here, I have found staff very helpful and caring and very patient, even when extremely busy and short staffed, but it does vary with different members of staff. Basically, I think they all work extremely hard and have been very caring when anyone becomes emotional."
Ethel Scarehome.co.uk rating: 4.17 out of 5

"From the first time I visited Challoner House to visit a resident (now deceased), I have found the home to be a very good unit compared to hospital units! I visited as Chaplain. The care is up with some of the best, and better than many. I have found the staff helpful and supportive of my ministry, and very caring towards residents. I frequently recommend Challoner House to people who are looking for residential care for relatives."

"My mother has lived at Challoner House for a little over two years. The care that she receives is of a high standard. She is treated with respect, affection and admiration due to her great age of 101. My mother is a very private and independent lady which is respected by staff. Recently my mother-in-law also stayed at Challoner House for end of life care. My husband felt that he was well cared for as well as his mother. In the end, he felt that he was enveloped in a huge hug by management and staff."

"From when I first came to the home I have found all the staff have taken the time to bother about all needs no matter what and have gone our of their way no matter day or night. I personally have found everyone has understood when I have needed someone to talk to, all in all everything about this care home is ideal."
Ethel Scarehome.co.uk rating: 4.5 out of 5
"I went into Challoner House after my husband's death, feeling very frail and unable to walk without help. I felt sick at the mention of food and had lost over a stone in a couple of weeks. I found the staff most sympathetic and helpful, day and night, so that after five weeks more or less I felt able to come to this place (extra care scheme), which is for people with some kind of disability, but basically able to look after themselves. However, if my condition (or either when my condition) deteriorates, I have asked my children to take me back to Challoner House."

"My mother was diagnosed as terminal with a brain tumour but was not 'ill' enough to go to the local hospice. She required 24 hour personal care however, which I was not able to do on my own so I chose Challoner House, as it had all the personal and nursing care that would be needed as she deteriorated as well as a lively and cheerful atmosphere. From first to last (approx 10 weeks) every member of staff was fantastic. Mum was always comfortable, clean and entertained and I was also looked after on my mostly daily visits. When mum was still 'with it' she always said how lovely everyone was. What I was most grateful for was that I was called at night when her condition changed for the worse so I was able to be with her for her last few hours. I was treated with such respect and compassion. I can't thank all at Challoner House enough!"

"My mother has been a resident for only six weeks. Every time my brother and myself visit we always receive an extremely warm welcome from all of the staff no matter what designation, from carers to managers. We are always offered tea and cake (their speciality!) nothing is too much trouble for the staff. My mothers care is incredible every little thing is attended to especially by carers and night carer a particular favourite with my mother who always bring her a cup of tea in the early hours before she even asks for it!! The only minor detail is that breakfast is sometimes quite a late, but my mother does get up early, staff already think about that in providing a "goody box" for her to have with her early cup of tea. Beautiful new refurb like a five star hotel."

"We knew Challoner House was the right nursing home for dad straight away after visiting. Dad has complex needs and Challoner House have done their upmost to care and look after him. All aspects of his care are excellent. Staff at Challoner House love their jobs and this shows through the excellent service. My dad would be the first to complain about anything if it wasn't right and I haven't heard a thing."

"Brilliant care from all at the home. We were astonished by the level of care and time provided. Great care was taken to treat dad well and with respect. Also, we as his family were cared for too. We were always kept in the picture regarding dad's situation. Can't praise Challoner House enough."

"Shortly after my review in September, my darling husband had a chest infection and died peacefully on the 1st of October. The care he received was brilliant, at the end I was holding him, the manager was monitoring his pulse and keeping me informed. The after care I have received has amazed me, when my time comes I hope I get the same love, care and attention that my darling husband received at Challoner House. I would like to thank ALL the staff, and a special thanks to the deputy manager who delivered a lovely tribute at my husbands funeral."

"My two weeks spent at Barchester Challoner House Care Home were lovely. The staff were most attentive to my special menu requirements (I am an insulin type 1 diabetic) It was a good holiday! Just what I needed after a month in the hospital."

"I had to find respite facility for my 92 year old mother for 12 months as the apartment she has just purchased wasn't ready. I have to confess I'd heard mixed reviews, however I kept an open mind as I knew there was a new manager on board. The care and consideration given to mum exceeded my expectations. We had an extremely warm welcome and because we were not sure how long mum would have to stay it was made clear from the outset that she was welcome to stay as long as she liked or was necessary. Thank you to all the staff you go that extra mile. Well done."
