Society's attitude to mental health beginning to ‘shift’

The attitude of society towards mental health problems is beginning to change, according to industry experts.

Andy Bell, spokesman for the Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health, explained: "We are beginning to see the signs of progress [in mental health perceptions].

"The national Time to Change programme [in England] is beginning to shift our attitudes towards mental illness and people with mental health problems."

In Scotland the See Me campaign is also starting to break down societal myths and misconceptions about mental health, according to Mr Bell.

However, he warns that there is still a long way to go before society truly understands and accepts mental illness.

Work is also needed to get people to view mental conditions on par with physical ailments, which generally receive more sympathy and recognition.

Societal cooperation is vital in improving access to mental health diagnosis and care, in addition to preventing the feelings of alienation often felt by patients.
