Dementia Disco

Staff and residents dusted off their dancing shoes, leg warmers and glowsticks for the launch of their Dementia Disco initiative which they held, very aptly, during Dementia Action Week.

Knowing how much their residents living with dementia love to dance and sing, the activities team at came up with the genius idea of a dementia-friendly disco.  The team also invited relatives and loved ones, members of the local community and friends of the home to the first official dementia-friendly disco.

Celebrating The 80th Anniversary Of VE Day

We marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day in style by throwing a lunch and tea party to remember.  The home was decorated in red, white and blue and residents’ staff, and the local community dressed up in their 1940s-inspired glad rags and enjoyed a street party style lunch followed by live music in the garden and dancing.

Head chef, Joseph whipped up a delicious selection of freshly-baked biscuits, sandwiches, cakes and pastries for the occasion, all washed down with pots of tea and a celebratory glass of fizz to mark the occasion.

Residents observed the national two minute silence and listened again to Churchill’s iconic speech accepting Germany’s surrender and an address from the Queen.  They reminisced about their memories of VE Day and watched clips of the celebrations that took place outside Buckingham Palace and all across London.

RNLI Fundraiser

The home raised £103 for RNLI. Residents, staff and the local community at the home in Bridlington came together to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) following a successful Spring Fair held at the home in April.

The event brought local community for a day of fun, games, and fundraising. Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone involved, the home raised a fantastic £103 for the RNLI.

To mark the occasion, residents and staff visited the local RNLI shop to present a cheque to the RNLI team, celebrating the community spirit and support for this vital charity.

World Cocktail day!

We marked this with a lovely selection of cocktails whilst enjoying the sunshine in the garden.
Most residents opted for the Non-alcoholic fruit cocktail which Brian made. All served in a lovely cocktail glass with a sugar rim and a cherry! A perfect way to mark the day!
What's your favourite cocktail?

National Doughnut Day

Pizza Making Party

A huge thank you to the Anna, General Manager and her team at PizzaExpress in Christchurch for hosting some of our residents for a VIP Pizza making party - we had so much fun!
The residents were so animated when they got back to the home telling us all about the dough and having to hold this above their heads! They returned with pizza's they had made choosing their own toppings. Whilst they were there they enjoyed dough balls, plenty of pizza and nice coffee after the meal. The team at the restaurant were superb and made this a truly special trip for us!

VE Day

We celebrated the 80th anniversary of VE Day in style today with something for everyone.
To start we joined others outside West Parley Memorial Hall for a service led by St. Mark's & All Saints' Churches, West Parley and West Parley Parish Council with one of our residents laying a poppy wreath along with children from Parley Pre-School
After the moving service is was back to Parley Place for refreshments and entertainment courtesy of Retro Rita in the garden, is was a lovely morning and the sun came out for us.
For lunch we decorated the room and all joined together for a "street party" with our fine china and wonderful buffet made by our versatile chefs.
After lunch we were joined by some pupils from Parley First School who chatted with our residents, did some word searches together and made some paper planes.
The day was finished off with a lovely player from Ferndown Ukulele Strummers providing us with another sing along!
We hope you like watching the video of our day - it certainly was one to remember.

Flower Arranging

Our talented residents took part in flower arranging and created some beautiful arrangements.

The life enrichment activities we offer let our residents express their creativity and individuality and this proved a very enjoyable activity.

Enjoying Memories - Dementia Awareness Week - 19 - 25 May 2025

This year, as part of Dementia Awareness week, we welcomed Sarah Bennion, the Dementia Ambassador for Worcestershire Library Services - pictured here with Liz our Deputy Manager at Elgar Court. Sarah is promoting their new library loan initiative "Memories". This is a themed backpack containing items to invoke engagement on that theme, such as sport or travel and can be loaned out with their library card to people living with dementia to use - as you would a library book. Residents today explored one of these themed bags, and they had such fun looking at the pictures and items from their era and talking about their lives of that time.

All libraries across Worcestershire now have a fantastic source of dementia information, and we had the privilege of adding to these resources by providing books for young children to read about why their grandparents or great grandparents, might need a little more help if they have dementia. Here you can see Phillip at Great Malvern library with Barchester books to provide free to families (they will also be distributed to other libraries in the county).

Classic Car Sunday!

We had an amazing turnout at Elgar Court with the launch of our Classic Car Sunday Season. The range of cars that visited really impressed everyone, and which included a Piper GTR, Porsche, Austin Healey, Landrover, Triumph Stag, MG and of course a Morgan - or two!

Residents had a great morning looking around and sitting in the cars including Helen in the Stag, and Vicky our Administrator finding it tricky getting out of the Piper GTR! This is a great event to meet likeminded enthusiasts with and without a car and meet new and old friends.

A big thank you to everyone who came from far and wide to take part - especially the lovely couple from Scotland who were down for the car show at the Three Counties this weekend and made time for us.
If you would like to take part and enjoy a complimentary Bacon bag and cakes, please come to our next event - Sunday 15 June 2025, 10am - 12.30pm

Into Bluebell Wood!

This week was no ordinary trip to the library, but a surprise afternoon out! After the Library, residents were asked if they would like to see the Bluebells slopes on the other side of Malvern.
A unanimous yes, but also made better via a trip to Waitrose to pick up ice creams and lollies to enjoy whilst looking at the spectacular views of the Bluebell slopes on the Malvern Hills.

Life is never dull at Elgar Court, come and see us or visit our website of events to find out why.

VE Day Celebrations

Today, his Majesty The King joined the Second World War veterans in London for the military procession and fly past to mark VE Day 80, and residents at Elgar Court observed the two-minute national silence at 12:00 to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).
We celebrated VE Day and our freedom with a cheering concert with the D-Day Dollies and we remembered those veterans who fought to kept us safe.
Many of our residents with visitors from our community over tea and cake of those war time memories. Alice who is 105 years old, remembered both wars and other residents were evacuees during the second world war shared their experiences today.

Sincerely, thank you from everyone at Elgar Court.

Profiteroles are MAGNIFIQUE!

Dan gave the Residents' tea time Profiteroles the 'Chef's Kiss' this week, and made them SUPER SIZED!
Usually our residents can expect dainty little trios on their plates, but this week our residents thoroughly enjoyed these delightful showstoppers! Full of whipped double cream and fresh chocolate, residents said they were magnifique!

Pump Up the Volume!

Sheila's hearing has been declining recently so, when the Specsavers Team Callum and Hussain visited this week, we tested Sheila's hearing and Specsaver gave her a pair of her very first hearing aids! Sheila thought the test was very easy and simple, and as you can see here, Sheila is wearing headphones while Hussain measures the level of her hearing.

These have made such a difference to Sheila's way of life and she told us, "These hearing aid are very comfy, I can hear conversations clearly now with my friends here - I can even hear the paper rustling when I turn the pages of my magazines! We went out on the minibus after I had these fitted, and I could even hear the engine and it's made such a difference !".

At Elgar Court, we are always looking for ways to improve the daily lives of our residents, and we are over the moon for Sheila.

To register for a Specsavers Home visit, come along to our next event where the team will take your details and do an initial assessment. Our next event is: Wednesday 25th June from 10.30am - 3pm.
These hearing aids are free on the NHS!

Happy birthday Susan!

We absolutely love a party at Elgar Court, so it’s a delight to hold a party for a resident’s birthday and their family and friends.

For Susann’s birthday luncheon, everyone enjoyed a delicious luncheon including tropical salad with king prawns, rare roasted beef, baked ham and quiches. But the celebration birthday cake Susan’s family had commissioned, was certainly the pièce de resistance! Expertly decorated and crafted in confectioner’s sugar, the detailing from the basket and handles and flowers made this cake a special tribute to mark Susan’s birthday.
Happy birthday Susan!
