"My father had excellent palliative care the staff were very patient with his fussy ways and accommodating and always kept me up to date. I don’t however feel the doctor from local surgery made enough visits and was dismissive."

"It feels slightly weird, reading lots of other glowing reviews of Dudwell St Mary and knowing that although I recognise many elements of other reviews, our experience was hugely out of line with others. I would hope that it was a 'one-off'. Dudwell St Mary has a very nice ambience, great location, the staff are lovely, smiles abound and yet, in our case the care just was not there. Our family group has considerable experience of care and nursing, and a relative recently in other local care home, so our expectations were very realistic. My mother, very elderly and with dementia, went there from care at home. It was initially to be four weeks respite, with the intention that it would become long-term. In the event, we brought her home after one week. There was a catalogue of failings, they were recognised by senior staff at the time, apologised for, but nothing seemed to get better. Effective communication between staff seemed to be almost entirely missing."

"Every single person on the team at Dudwell St Mary was outstandingly caring, from our first day onwards. We couldn’t have asked for more. The team really cared for my father, giving him all the care, attention and support that both he and we needed. I couldn’t recommend the team and facility more highly for those in need of the care that Dudwell St Mary offers."

"Every single member of the team at Dudwell is fantastic. They show so much care and empathy, not only to their residents but to the whole family. We can't praise them highly enough. We took great comfort in knowing that Mum was being taken care of so beautifully."

"Visited our old neighbour, it was our first visit to the home. I was delighted to see how settled our friend was. She was happy, smiling and telling me how lovely it was. They had an entertainer in when we arrived and afterwards, the staff were polite and respectful to all those who worked, asked their opinion and interacted well with all."

"Mum needed respite care at short notice, and the management couldn’t have been more helpful at a time of considerable familial stress. On admission, the staff executed their process with considerable care and attention to detail, and we left the home very assured about Mum’s safety and comfort. Throughout her 11-day stay, she was kept comfortable in high-quality surroundings. But most striking was the quality of the staff. Nursing, care, support, estates, admin: everyone we met went out of their way to make Mum’s stay as comfortable as possible, which allowed the family to make the necessary arrangements at home free from worry. It’s invidious to single out staff members for particular praise each was superb. Those who between us we can recall include, excellent senior management; The gentleman in estates; nurses and the lady in care/support and everyone else who made this respite stay so successful."

"Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home was superb in our hour of need. My mum wanted to move out of hospital for her last days of life. Her needs were complex however the staff made huge efforts to understand her care needs and give her the most comfortable, dignified end. Not only was Mum cared for but the staff cared for us too. Nothing was too much trouble. Having a comfortable place to sit, drink tea and discuss care needs was so important after being in an open hospital ward for two weeks. The clinical lead was exceptional, understanding our family's needs for information and providing it in a clear and considered way. The clinical lead and the whole Dudwell St Mary team are the best and we owe them a huge debt of gratitude."

"My mother’s stay at Dudwell St Mary was sadly too short. We moved her from hospital for end-of-life care. From my first phone call to her sad death, everyone was so kind, helpful and could not do enough for my family. This really is a special place, on the top of the ridge in Burwash. Thank you to all the staff - you made a difficult time easier."

"Visited today to see a client I used to care for! The home is very warm and welcoming, staff are always available to help and guide you to where you need to go, refreshments offered and the offer of sitting in a lounge instead of their bedroom, which we took the offer of and was pleasantly surprised with how comfy and homely the area was. To see my ex-client happy and smiling was lovely to see."

"The nursing and care teams looked after my mum at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home for several months. She received genuinely excellent care which I witnessed on many occasions at first-hand. It was refreshing to see such kindness shown to someone, my mum, who could be difficult (she had advanced dementia) and I know Mum grew to be very comfortable in this environment. I could not have wished for more."

"Mum has been very happy living at Dudwell. The staff have been fantastic in helping her to transition to a new way of living. Special shout out to two members of staff on the top floor. She enjoyed the activities and felt safe. She was seen and treated as an individual. Mangement scores relate to an incident specifically."

"My father-in-law has been a resident at the home for several months now, and having a loved one move into a care home is never an easy decision to make and it filled our family with dread. The reality has been such a relief to us seeing him settle so well into the new environment. The home is beautifully maintained and the staff have been nothing but delightful every time we visit. It is a real relief to us knowing that he has someone who can be with him anytime day or night and that the care he receives is such a great standard."

"I have nothing but praise for this wonderful care home. The setting is beautiful and the atmosphere inside is warm, welcoming and friendly. Every member of staff I have encountered has been kind, helpful and sensitive. This is very reassuring for me and I have every confidence in the management who lead the team. I am extremely grateful to all the staff on Memory Lane for taking good care of my husband but also communicating with me. The activities staff are fantastic and pay close attention to detail when responding to the needs of an individual. They show kindness and humour which is so important to me. Thank you so much for everything you do, all your hard work and for enabling me to know that my husband is safe in your hands."

"In general, myself and Dad (the resident's husband) are very pleased and happy with Dudwell. Warm welcome by the reception/management team. Majority of staff are friendly and kind towards ourselves and Mum. Sometimes I have noticed not all staff talk to Mum. Most food looks appetizing. Activities I am unable to comment on as I do not know enough, except that the Jubilee party was very nice and fitting for the residents. Mum enjoyed it. A few niggles, like would be nice if clothes were ironed and hung up in the cupboard to keep them respectable for the niceness of the residents to feel good in their clothes, rather than being ruffled up in the cupboard. Dudwell seems a happy place, even though, very sadly, Mum is not happy in herself having to be there. Dudwell certainly is a nice care home. I would happily recommend it."

"Our Dad initially moved into Dudwell St Mary for a period of respite after a traumatic six months of ill health and prolonged hospital treatment. After his respite time came to an end he decided to become a permanent resident. As a family, we cannot fault the excellent care that our Dad is receiving. He often remarks on how happy and settled he feels and he certainly looks better than he has for a long time. Nothing is too much trouble for the Dudwell’s staff and we couldn’t have found a nicer place for our Dad to live."

"My mum recently has a hip replacement and needed aftercare, the home could not have done enough for her. Although we could not visit due to covid, through our calls we were delighted to hear from her about how wonderful the home was and she was very happy. The respite gave her confidence when she needed to go home. Thank you to all the staff you have been amazing."

"My husband has had two respite stays at Dudwell St Marys, one of one week and one of two weeks. I have had other experiences of care homes with my parents and Dudwell St Marys far exceeds those. All of the staff are friendly, caring and efficient. The standard of care is excellent and the facilities are also excellent. My husband enjoyed his stays, bearing in mind that he was reluctant before he was admitted. I would have no hesitation in using Dudwell St Marys again."

"Placing a relative in a care facility can be extremely stressful and worrying, especially with the recent pandemic. My mum has advanced dementia and can no longer manage at home. She has been there for 2 months now and has good and bad days. Nowhere is perfect in my experience but the staff here are very caring, and I am very happy with the team and the environment. The staff are mostly consistent and therefore have got to know my mum's needs. When small issues do arise, they do listen and try their best to put them right, and the care is very tailored to the individual. I have had experience of other homes, and this is much better than any of the others I have tried. I am very happy with the care from the team at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home"

"I cannot emphasise enough how impressed I have been with this care home. From my first visit to view it for my mother, the manager could not have been more accommodating to my very specific requirements and everything he promised was fulfilled from room requests to furniture changes and all done immediately. The staff are second to none. Not only in the genuine care they provide which is of the highest standard but also in the professional way they act towards me and one another. It is very clear to see that they are an excellent team and communicate well. On the second day mum was there, I phoned and said mum had moved into the home the day before and the person who answered immediately said her name and went on to tell me how she was doing. Very reassuring. The actual accommodation and surroundings are the best I have ever seen."

"Due to lockdown much of what goes on is not experienced. My sister has been a resident for two months only. However, what I have experienced is very good and I have no complaint. "My friend has settled well and the care team have been very responsive to her needs and any challenges presented since admission. I have been kept fully informed regarding her health and care needs and any issues of concern. My queries are followed up promptly. The care team, deputy manager and office team are friendly and welcoming whether by telephone or face to face. The activities team have worked extremely hard."

"Originally I came to be with my sister who had been a patient in Kings College Hospital. As we needed the house to be underpinned, I came to join my sister due to this and the Covid pandemic. I have been in two different houses and usually despite staff shortages at times I am pleased with my life under this roof."

"Mum went into Dudwell for respite first. We are extremely impressed with the caring staff and how Mum has progressed from not eating and drinking to now seems settled, eating well and happy as can be after leaving her home of 74 years. The garden view is fantastic which hopefully she will be able to enjoy next year. A big thank you to all the staff in these hard times and also for the garden visits."

"My sister has been resident at Dudwell St Mary for a few years. During this time we have found the staff both medical and administrative kind, considerate and very professional, treating my sister with kindness, dignity and proper care where needed. During the unfortunate virus time of 2020, we have been kept well informed with guidance and safety to my sister. Care wise, business has been excellent."

"Under what a difficult year, the service has been excellent. Visits in the garden have been excellent in their organising. My only question was could a pod not have been organised early for colder or wet days. Anytime I have rung with worries or general questions, the staff have always been so very, very helpful. I thank them all."

"My sister and I had to find an alternative home whilst the family house was undergoing a big underpinning and my sister had been ill in hospital and needed to be nearer our nephew and family in Kent. Most of the care has been well thought out and one or two of the staff have been extra helpful on my wobbly moments. "Thank you for making a difficult time bearable. My mother sadly passed away the first week in October, the manager and staff whilst taking every precaution with regard to Covid-19 still enabled me to be with mum in her last hours and to support my father who shared a room with her. They allowed me to break the news of her death to my dad and to be there in his grief. On the day of her funeral, they were understanding and helpful and there when he returned with compassion and reassurance. Thank you."

"I was charged with selecting a home for my friend and after viewing several found the atmosphere and facilities excellent at Dudwell. She has been a resident now for more than three years. She has a delightful room. The staff are excellent and always welcoming and she has physical needs as well as Alzheimer's and the care has been first class. Some activities have been curtailed during lockdown but we have weekly garden visits. I cannot comment on value for money as her finances are managed elsewhere."

"Thank you to the staff that always answer the phone with a cheerful and helpful manner, nothing is too much trouble. To the Nurses who know the residents so well and who listen to their families always keeping them informed. To the carers who really care for each individual resident and know them so well. Giving families confidence they are looked after. To the domestic staff for keeping Dudwell clean, residents' rooms are fresh and comfortable as are the lounges and visitor areas. To the laundry for ensuring clothes are returned clean and fresh no mean feat. (An ironing service would be a suggestion.) To the chef and kitchen staff for the high standard of meals. Particularly how often fish is on the menu. And for accommodating family when they bring in residents in favourites from home. To event, garden, maintenance staff. There are (literally) not enough words. So finally thank you to the manager for bringing all of the above together making Dudwell St Mary the place that it is."

"Having received poor care in another nursing home we are delighted with the quality of care, friendliness of the staff and attention to individuals needs. "Over a period close to five years we have found the standard of care provided by the carers is excellent. Over the past few months, Dudwell has been without a general manager but the senior staff have shown an excellent standard of efficiency in maintaining the high level in the care of residents. The standard of accommodation bedroom for our sister is satisfactory but not really good compared with other bedrooms. This is probably because she is LA funded, although previously self-funded. Other accommodation is very good, such as lounges, sanitary facilities etc."

"I would like to send a huge thank you to the amazing staff at Dudwell St Mary for the most amazing, surprise lunch that they organised for our 44th wedding anniversary last Friday. It was such a surprise I was speechless. The table was set as if in a top-notch restaurant, flowers, wine, a banner and a card signed by all the staff, I was so overwhelmed that I had tears in my eyes driving home. My husband has been a resident at this home for nearly six months and has multiple health issues, but the care that he receives is outstanding. Each and every member of staff are kind, caring, compassionate, tactile (a hug, stroke of the head, holding a hand goes a long way). Every resident is subject to the utmost care and devotion, dignity, respect, kindness and compassion, almost as if it was a member of their own family. Thank you one and all for taking such fantastic care of my husband. I love you all. Dudwell Saint Mary ROCKS."

Sadly my father passed away in February, however he only had a short stay here, where he was treated with kindness and dignity. "I am very happy that I chose Dudwell St Mary, Burwash for my husbands 24 hour residential care. I have been more than pleased with the care and support they have given my husband through his very complex behaviour and health problems. "In some ways, difficult to compare with the competition as this is the only care home we have known in recent years. I can say though, that the nursing staff have always been very helpful, especially since my mother's health has deteriorated. "In need of 24-hour care, I placed my husband into the care of Dudwell St Mary in November 2017. The open visiting times made it easier to adjust, having been married 64 years. The manager, nursing and caring staff are very friendly and approachable with your queries or problems. Supporting and reassuring and a 'cuddle' is given to my husband if needed. They are quick to contact the G P if aware of any change or need. Medication constantly under review. I made the right decision and a good one when I chose Dudwell St Mary."

"After a lengthy stay in hospital following a fall, my 91-year-old father found himself in need of permanent care. Social services recommended this home amongst a few others. If you needed somewhere at the twilight of your days, then you could do a lot worse than here."

"Having visited other care homes in the area (East Sussex), I was impressed by the staff, facilities, friendliness and layout of the Dudwell St Mary care home. Clean rooms with windows she could look out onto nice views, comfortable, small, intimate dining areas (not one big institutional canteen as in other homes), wide corridors. Here the staff had time for the residents to get to know the likes and dislikes of the residents and treat them with dignity."

"I was visiting the care home today and I felt compelled to share what a great place it is. I have spent a lot of time in various care homes as my granddad had dementia and needed full-time specialist care. But I have never had such a pleasant visit. The grounds were immaculate but it was the staff that made it extra special. All of them were so friendly and pleasant especially the manager who was a joy to be around. You couldn't leave without feeling happier than when you arrived"

"I can't thank the manager and team enough for the care and compassion they have shown not only my Father who is using the short break service, but also towards my Mum who is his primary carer. Looking after Dad can be incredibly difficult so respite is much needed; knowing Dad is being looked after by kind and caring staff who treat him with respect means that Mum can really relax and recharge her batteries. Can't rate highly enough."

"My mother has only been here for 11 days, but I am nevertheless more than happy to complete this review on first impressions. On entering Dudwell St Mary, I was immediately struck by the immaculately tended gardens and the calm and serene atmosphere. All the staff are happy and friendly and have been kind to my mother. The nurses are very vigilant, right down to supplying me with all the relevant information for my mother's trip to the dentist. The manager clearly operates an open door policy and is willing to discuss any points I may wish to raise. Mum has settled quickly after a 4 and a half year stay at another home."

"Of necessity, my review and comments are only first impressions, given that my friend's mother has only been at Dudwell St Mary for 11 days. However, those first impressions are generally most positive. On our preliminary visits to the home, I was struck by the calm and friendly atmosphere and the overall environment engendered. The grounds are kept immaculately and the staff seem willing to help in any way they can. My friend's mother seemed to have settled in very well and very quickly after an unhappy last few months at her previous care home. Well done."

"My mother was here for just under two weeks for post hip replacement surgery convalescence. She is 87, very forgetful and gets confused easily. She has difficulty processing information, hence unable to complete this form herself. We are very happy with the care that was provided here and with the very warm and friendly and very patient manner of all the staff. With sincere gratitude thanks from all the family on her behalf."

"Following a long stay in the hospital and a hospice, Mum had a month here before she came home. The building is pleasing and spotlessly clean and the food is great. The most important thing for us was the care mum received and I had no worries there at all. I have been a nurse for 38 years, and not once in the month mum was there did I worry about how mum was being treated. If you have been a full-time carer responsible for decisions made for another you will understand what a relief it was to have a conscientious team take over some of the burdens for a while. Mum or I only needed to highlight something and it was sorted out. The staff were unfailing kind and helpful and I saw some genuinely touching caring attitudes towards the less able residents. I can't name names here but thank you, guys. I needed a break to recharge my batteries for times ahead and I got that. We hope to see you soon."

"My mother was enrolled at Dudwell St.Mary (Barchester) after three years of having live-in carers in her own home. This arrangement became unsatisfactory when her night-time wandering increased and a second carer has to be arranged to provide adequate 24 hour cover. My mother settled into Dudwell St. Mary within a few days and we have been impressed by the kindness and care shown. A few organisational 'slips' (running out of paper towel) have not detracted to any real degree."

"My mother has received the most wonderful care during her stay at Dudwell. The staff have treated her with the utmost care and respect and have also supported us during this difficult time. The team have encouraged my mother to eat something she struggled with at home, and have made her days more peaceful than I had thought possible."

"I cannot praise all the staff at Dudwell St Mary Care Home enough. They are all exemplary and work to the highest standard. I appreciate their attention to detail, listening skills, policy of transparency, genuine kindness, cooperation, respect and level of hygiene, which is five star. The buildings smell fresh like a family home. It is set in wonderful and peaceful countryside. I know mum is safe, secure, cared for and loved. I have peace of mind. Dudwell deserves the highest of awards. I never have to worry about mum’s safety or her physical, emotional and mental well-being. She is cared for with the utmost quality and dignity and is utterly respected. Mum has a beautiful room with a beautiful view and she is very settled. I cannot recommend this care/nursing home highly enough. It is not just the hygiene that is five star, it is every aspect of Dudwell St Mary, from the setting, the buildings, the staff, the management and catering. If only all care/nursing homes were like Dudwell St Mary."

"In the absence of any close relatives, another longstanding friend and I researched care homes in the area after our friend had a stay in hospital and was recently widowed. She was physically frail and suffering from a degree of confusion and memory problems. In selecting a home, our criteria was "Could we stay there ourselves?". On visiting Dudwell St Mary the answer was a firm "Yes". From the general manager down the care is exemplary. Staff are well-trained, friendly, sympathetic and competent. Nothing is too much trouble to spend time with residents and their visitors to talk and to resolve any issues concerning heath, well-being and comfort. The food, atmosphere, furnishings and activities are of a very high standard and I would recommend it without reservation."

"Our stay at the home has always been welcome by all the members of staff in all areas we go to. My father has enjoyed his time at the care home and is always happy to return back after he goes out, which he does regularly. The care home is always being re-decorated where and when needed and I look forward to seeing the rest of the complex completed."

"We find Dudwell St.Mary very caring and excellent nursing home. However, at times we find the use of agency staff who, although caring, are not always familiar with the particular routine of individual residents."

"We are very happy with our fathers care at Dodwell St Mary. The home is very clean and tidy and there has been investment in decoration. The food is good and so is the nursing care. My dad is on a dementia ward which is always challenging but the staff treat him with dignity and care. We are very pleased with the manager and staff."

"The first impression we received when visiting Dudwell St Mary was an atmosphere of warmth, kindness and welcome. We met several members of the staff, all of whom were friendly and smiling, We were offered tea or coffee, which we accepted with pleasure. The public rooms are sensitively furnished with warm reds and browns and the temperature is kept at a comfortable level. Our daughter, who has been here about one month, seems to like the environment, food and staff. From what we have seen, we would say she is lucky to be a resident at Dudwell St Mary."

"Staff very friendly and caring- father settled in well. More staff could be with residents at meal times. Some residents who become agitated and verbal could be encouraged to engage with others activities so as not to upset quieter, vulnerable residents. Some residents find language and behaviour of others upsetting- maybe use quieter area for quieter residents as can be upset."

"I have been at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home since September and has settled in really well, although naturally, it took me time to get used to a change of environment. The staff have been excellent and caring and friendly. I would like to see more activities laid on during the day as we only have one per week on a Monday. Otherwise, all is fine."

"I am pleased my mother settled in well and is receiving the care and attention she needs. My only gripe is the lack of social activities. When she spent two weeks at Barchester Dudwell St Mary Care Home earlier in the year, there was something happening every weekday or evidenced by her being provided with a weekly time table. At present, something only happens on a Monday. This goes against your brochure which contains 7 pictures, 4 of which cover activities! I know you have many residents who have dementia but certain activities e.g. music can help stimulate them."

"My mother has been resident at Dudwell St Mary since September 2007. The home handled her transition with all the anxieties, gently and carefully. We have had consistently good care. As her strength has diminished the care needs have changed. She has been consistently and gently cared for. Now she is asleep almost all the time. Care standard have been very high. The home has responded quickly to any and all of our concerns as soon as they are raised."

"I have found Dudwell St Mary to be a warm and friendly home with excellent caring staff and a very pleasant environment. It is clean and very well presented. My mum is happy there in her ground floor room where she's allowed numerous bird feeders outside her window! I am kept informed about her welfare and we are allowed to come and go freely and always offered tea and very often a meal. I am very happy that mum is living there."

"Exceptional. Conscientious. Impeccable. Safe. Trustworthy. 10/10 The needle in the haystack when it comes to finding the very best care home, with the very best care, the very best staff, and the very best manager. Add to all of the above, and more in terms of praiseworthy, Dudwell is a haven of peace, calm and beauty. My mum is here now and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Absolutely Outstanding."

"My husband suffered 18 years of PD and diagnosed with myeloma in February 2016 and spent the last six months of his life at Dudwell St. Mary. Management - any issues I raised were resolved quickly and tactfully. Nursing - a very efficient team who delivered complex medication largely on time. Carers - never complained about what they were asked to do, however often. I felt all these highly professional people also became our friends. I was welcomed and invited to share a meal with my husband. End of Life - sensitive and caring. All personnel took the time to talk to my husband and me, whenever."

"The entire team from manager to all care staff have consistently provided excellent care for my Grandmother over the past 2 1/2 years. The carers treated my Gran with compassion and dignity as well as great patience. The team appeared happy and stable creating a lovely homely atmosphere on memory lane.
