What our families say

What a fantastic home. The care delivery is second to none. Could not wish for a better place! Coffee mornings on a friday are a considerable perk!

After having to return to Awel-Y-Mor for 2 weeks due to my care agency failing me at Christmas, there's only a few words that I can use that can describe this magnificent care home, and they are: miraculous, dedicated, friendly and special! From the moment I entered the building I was greeted warmly, and that was the theme throughout the duration of my stay. Every single staff member was an absolute joy to speak to, was patient, friendly and absolutely wonderful! Due to my spinal injury I require different routines to many of the residents, but the staff were well versed in the situation, and even some that were unfamiliar with me, a couple of minutes on how best to help look after me was all it took for them to understand and make me feel like I was at home! They are the absolute jewel in the crown of the UK care industry! From the carers, to the nurses, the cooks, the cleaners, the therapists, the maintenance men, the office staff and managers, every single member of staff, you will not find another place where everyone was so warm, friendly, caring, nothing was too much for them to the point where I felt compelled to write to one of the deputy staff members saying how immensely grateful I am to everyone, and that I really did feel like a VIP! what is even more special is the support they give to each other! Even during these incredibly difficult times of this covid pandemic, with staff isolations and testing positive etc, I have never seen a workforce of people in a job more supportive and together then here! They will do their upmost and beyond to make sure that we, the residents, are safe, fed and well looked after, no matter what the numbers of staff on duty due to these crazy pandemic times! It is clear to see how much they really care about us, and I felt completely safe there despite covid numbers in Wales rising! I could continue like this and talk about every single member of staff but I would be here for a week writing :D and I am so so proud of the Welsh care sector to see so many people from all over the world, from the Philippines, to China, Romania, Poland, Thailand and more, all working in Awel-Y-Mor and is like 1 big global family that all pull together to give an absolutely incredible experience to as real a home life as possible, and I cannot thank them enough for everything they've done for me!
If Barchester hold award ceremonies throughout their company like many companies do, save your money this year and just hand them all over to the Awel-Y-Mor staff, because you won't find a more incredible bunch of people working together like this on the planet!
From the bottom of my heart, thank you, thank you, thank you, to every single one of you!!
Dave Davis

Everytime I have visited the staff have always been very friendly. The care home is clean and tidy and it always feels like the staff give the highest care.

"After a poor experience elsewhere, The nurse in charge of the first floor was very knowledgeable about manual bowel programs for spinal injury patients and made me feel very comfortable being in her care. I would gladly come back."

"An outstanding team (all staff) led by a very approachable and immensely supportive manager whose experience and ability to react instantly are impressive. The care afforded to my husband continues to excel and I only have to ask and I see a medic straight away. Clearly, communication is the key and teamwork. These are evident. I continue to be very pleased to have entrusted my husband to Awel-Y-Mor Care Home."

"The management of the home is reflected in the high standard of individual nursing care provided. The carers go the extra mile to ensure that patient's needs are met. Nurses and carers are supported by an effective physical therapy dept. The home is maintained to a very high standard, this enhances the patient's comfort. Many varied activities are offered in an inclusive manner to help stimulate and encourage patents. The dietary needs are met with flexibility and patience. The variety of foods offered provides for all tasks. This a happy ship."

"My aunt was placed in Awel-Y-Mor when her needs became too great for my grandmother to manage at home even with care and support. My aunt's needs were very complex and intense and at times very difficult to manage. The care she received was absolutely amazing. The staff are very knowledgeable and experience with supporting those with complex needs. My aunt was treated with dignity and respect by the staff. She was placed in the care home in the height of the pandemic and this was very difficult for us as a family but they ensured that we were aware of everything that was going on and they always had time to speak to us with regards to any concerns or changes in her health. There appeared to be activities going on at the care home which she thoroughly enjoyed, you only have to see their Facebook page to see the amazing activities that they do. I would highly recommend the care home due to the overall standard of care, respect and dignity given to the residents."

"My father was admitted to Awel-Y-Mor last June (2020). It was a very stressful time for us but the home was very reassuring, professional and informative about how Dad's needs would be met etc. It is difficult to comment on facilities etc as we have not been into the home due to Covid. However, activities continue and the staff appear to go to a lot of effort to make sure my Dad is comfortable and cared for while giving him as much independence as safe too. The lady who cares for Dad always gives me a detailed update when I call on what Dad has been doing and how he’s been., so important at the moment when we cannot visit inside and unfortunately I can’t get the feedback from Dad due to his illness. The home has done wonders to keep all the residents safe during this time, can’t thank them enough and I look forward to the time I can visit properly."

"My mother has been in this care home since June 2021. The staff are very kind to her and treat her with respect and dignity. Due to the fact that my mother is almost bedbound and does not like being hoisted and put into a wheelchair as she finds the process painful. Consequently, she does not participate in the in-house activities. The room is light and well-furnished and generally kept clean. The quality of the food that my mother (vegetarian) eats in her room is, in my opinion, poor. Her daily menu consists of breakfast - tea and toast, lunch - a baked potato with a filling and supper - a sandwich. I did, on one occasion, take the baked potato lunch my mother had been served back to reception as it looked as if it was two days old. There is a distinct lack of variety in her diet and little or no fresh fruit."

"I visit one of your residents most weeks and have always felt welcome and thoroughly enjoy the refreshments provided! I have experience of visiting other people in nursing and residential homes and without doubt, Barchester Awel-Y-Mor Care Home is, by far, the best. The indoor and outdoor facilities are most impressive with the gym and physio provisions are, in my opinion, beneficial to the health and well-being (both physical and mental) of residents. I'm also impressed by the variety of activities provided."

"My experience when visiting the home has always been a very positive one. The staff are always very friendly and sociable. I've always felt a good vibe from all members of staff. My father was the first person whom I visited at this home, and he sadly passed away there. I now visit a very good friend of mine there, and I can see how much he has improved since being there. The home is always immaculate and comfortable. My friend always tells me how he loves the food and is happy there."

"Wow! What an amazing, homely atmosphere, very high standard of cleanliness, residents were all treated like family. Didn't feel like a care home, felt like a family home, just bigger. Would highly recommend to anyone who has to place family/friends in this setting, who has to make this decision. Staff treat residents with kindness, respect and dignity, very impressed."

"Lovely, well-kept home with a friendly feeling. The staff are excellent with residents, nothing is too much trouble, always see smiling faces, more like a youth club, with activities for able-bodied, arts and crafts, doing jigsaws, loads of things to keep the residents occupied and entertainment brought in from outside, singers and various other entertainment. Always a positive atmosphere in the home. I have never seen anyone unhappy. When my time comes and I, myself, need caring for, I hope it's in a home just like Barchester Awel-Y-Mor Care Home. Excellent all round care with outstanding staff, excellent."

"Staff are friendly and committed, the standard of care is very high. The building is functional and well kept. Facilities are suitable and thought has clearly been involved in their planning. Although the building isn't an old, fancy mansion and there are clearly budgetary constraints on what can be achieved at this facility. Hard work and genuinely caring employees make Awel-y-Mor excellent value and a good quality of life. It is possible to pay a lot more elsewhere but it would be hard to get more than is on offer here. More work could be done on diet plans for residents."

"My brother has been a resident for 2 years. During that time, he has been well cared for. The staff are very kind, friendly, some are exceptional. They bother to get to know the person in their care and accommodate their needs/interests and build confidence. The activities team organise events and take residents out as much as they are able - from rugby to theatre to picnics, meals etc. The home occasionally has "restaurant evenings" where families join the residents for a lovely meal and entertainment. Overall, he is well cared for and I don't worry that he is safe."

"My brother has been in Awel-y-Mor Care Centre for about 4 years. His main carer (our mother) passed away in 2011, but he had been in other care establishments prior to arriving in Gorseinon. With Down syndrome and unable to communicate, he went through a harrowing grieving period. He needed good nursing care, which he has always received in Awel-y-Mor. My sister and I have been very pleased with the overall care. The staff are friendly every time I visit."
