What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"My mother has been in this care home since June 2021. The staff are very kind to her and treat her with respect and dignity. Due to the fact that my mother is almost bedbound and does not like being hoisted and put into a wheelchair as she finds the process painful. Consequently, she does not participate in the in-house activities. The room is light and well-furnished and generally kept clean. The quality of the food that my mother (vegetarian) eats in her room is, in my opinion, poor. Her daily menu consists of breakfast - tea and toast, lunch - a baked potato with a filling and supper - a sandwich. I did, on one occasion, take the baked potato lunch my mother had been served back to reception as it looked as if it was two days old. There is a distinct lack of variety in her diet and little or no fresh fruit."

"A very friendly and well-run care centre. The activities are outstanding and communication is really good. My mum has been here for a long time and I don't hesitate to recommend Barchester Awel-Y-Mor Care Home to anyone who wants to be a resident."

"My uncle is a resident of the home and I can honestly say I cannot fault the care and love he receives. The home has a very relaxed atmosphere and the whole team make you feel like family. The recent refurb is beautiful and I couldn't ask for a better place."

"An outstanding team (all staff) led by a very approachable and immensely supportive manager whose experience and ability to react instantly are impressive. The care afforded to my husband continues to excel and I only have to ask and I see a medic straight away. Clearly, communication is the key and teamwork. These are evident. I continue to be very pleased to have entrusted my husband to Awel-Y-Mor Care Home."

"Irrespective of the building and its finery, the care and management are my concern when reviewing a home. I delight in the teamwork and mutual inter support that the staff offer. High praise indeed, led by a very switched-on manager who has excellent social and interpersonal skills together with the required knowledge and experience."

"My Mum has Huntingdon's Disease and has very complex needs. Awel-Y-Mor are outstanding at making sure that she is part of an impressive activities program: going out for trips, meals, ice creams etc as well as enjoying in house sensory room and using the gym. They are creative in delivering a wide range in-house too. It is a team-wide effort led by the manager and they are very modest about how good they are, at what they do. Communication is very good and referrals made as required to HCPs and other networks including Huntingdon's Disease Association. My Mum has had a chaotic and troubled life and the biggest compliment I can pay Awel-Y-Mor is that she is settled and happy and this is down to the excellent care she gets. Mum has been at Awel-Y-Mor for over five years now and I hope for many more like this. I love the super friendly staff and always made welcome no matter what they have on their own plate and what challenges they face. Thanks: much appreciated."

"The biggest strength of this home is the staff and management; you are only as strong as the weakest link. Teamwork is paramount. Friendliness and welcoming home, helpful and obliging. I'm very confident that Awel-Y-Mor caters for all my husband's needs 100-per cent."

"The management of the home is reflected in the high standard of individual nursing care provided. The carers go the extra mile to ensure that patient's needs are met. Nurses and carers are supported by an effective physical therapy dept. The home is maintained to a very high standard, this enhances the patient's comfort. Many varied activities are offered in an inclusive manner to help stimulate and encourage patents. The dietary needs are met with flexibility and patience. The variety of foods offered provides for all tasks. This a happy ship."

"Very happy with Awel-Y-Mor in terms of the care offered to my husband and the standard of communication between myself and the home. Carers, management and all staff who work as a team and share expertise. Despite the restrictions of visiting due to Covid, the home has maintained contact through Facebook, social media and video calls. Now we can visit!"

"Both my daughter and late husband have received care at Barchester Awel-y-Mor. The staff have always been most helpful and courteous. Residents are treated with respect and kindness by everyone. Staff are innovative and are always looking for new opportunities to stimulate and entertain residents. "Awel-y-Mor the quality of care is superb, the home is beautiful, very welcoming, super efficiently run, the quality of care is fantastic, the staff are all welcoming, caring, helpful and compassionate not only to residents but also the families. They looked after my man for me until he was able to return home to me in our new home, the staff there have become our extended family keep up the excellent work guys. You have all worked so so hard under extreme circumstances well done you should all give yourselves a pat on the back. Stay safe everyone once again a massive massive thank you to Awel-y-Mor. "Awel-y-Mor has continued contact by technology, phone etc during these restrictive times, they do all they can to ensure visiting is possible in a safe and friendly environment both indoor (specially designed safe room) and outdoor. The on-site maintenance and staff did a great job, carers and management work well as a team as do the rest of the staff."

"I cannot praise this home highly enough. The care is excellent and they always go above and beyond for all of the residents living there. During covid their number one priority has been strict infection control to ensure the safety of both the residents and staff. There are always stimulating activities going on to make up for the fact that visits are limited. They have built a covid safe visiting suite and have a booking system to ensure that visiting is fair for everyone. They have a closed Facebook group that they post photos of what our loved ones are doing daily, it's so nice to see that they are having lots of fun! They have invested in technology to provide video calling for residents to see their families when visiting is difficult. I wouldn't wish for my mum to be living anywhere else ( other than at home, obviously!)."

"My father was admitted to Awel-Y-Mor last June (2020). It was a very stressful time for us but the home was very reassuring, professional and informative about how Dad's needs would be met etc. It is difficult to comment on facilities etc as we have not been into the home due to Covid. However, activities continue and the staff appear to go to a lot of effort to make sure my Dad is comfortable and cared for while giving him as much independence as safe too. The lady who cares for Dad always gives me a detailed update when I call on what Dad has been doing and how he’s been., so important at the moment when we cannot visit inside and unfortunately I can’t get the feedback from Dad due to his illness. The home has done wonders to keep all the residents safe during this time, can’t thank them enough and I look forward to the time I can visit properly."

"My aunt was placed in Awel-Y-Mor when her needs became too great for my grandmother to manage at home even with care and support. My aunt's needs were very complex and intense and at times very difficult to manage. The care she received was absolutely amazing. The staff are very knowledgeable and experience with supporting those with complex needs. My aunt was treated with dignity and respect by the staff. She was placed in the care home in the height of the pandemic and this was very difficult for us as a family but they ensured that we were aware of everything that was going on and they always had time to speak to us with regards to any concerns or changes in her health. There appeared to be activities going on at the care home which she thoroughly enjoyed, you only have to see their Facebook page to see the amazing activities that they do. I would highly recommend the care home due to the overall standard of care, respect and dignity given to the residents."

"The on-going care in these most difficult of times is second-to-none at Awel-y-Mor. Each and every member of staff is committed to keeping the residents safe and well. Staff are also ensuring that appropriate activities continue in order to maintain the morale of the residents. I cannot thank them enough for looking after my husband so well. Loving the social media page by the way."

"My mum has been at the care home for many years, and due to her illness can be quite a handful. My hat goes off to the staff for not only their exceptional care and tenacity but for also accommodating my phone calls at weird hours. Their demeanour on answering the phone is always ‘can do’ bubbly and always ask me how America is. Just recently, one of the staff tried to accommodate a video call with my mother at home, but the time difference was our enemy. I absolutely adore the staff and what they do. Thank you."

"My husband has been here for 19 years now. It is his home. This is largely due to the dedication and professionalism of its staff, but also to how much they care about their clients. They have become family, and under current circumstances, I worry about them as much as the rest of our family. I take my hat off to them all! A wonderful bunch of people."

"The whole team here are very welcoming and the attention to detail is noticeably better than other homes I considered. It’s always spotless, there is a constant program of renewals to make the place look and feel fresh but it's the staff that really make the difference. My Mum has been here for over three years and has really thrived. The activities are creative, built around her needs and video calling during COVID lockdown has been a revelation to her. I’m not on the doorstep so it's real peace of mind for me to know how well she is being cared for. My Dad and Uncle are no longer with us but they were also cared for at Awel-y-Mor. My Dad loved the food and the daily visit from the chef to see what could tempt him. It’s a real team effort and I can't thank all the staff enough."

"My father was a resident at Awel-y-Mor for a year. He had been seriously ill after suffering a brain haemorrhage and required 24-hour specialist care. We had viewed several homes in the locality, prior to visiting Awel-y-Mor. On our first visit to Awel-y-Mor, we were shown around by a lovely welcoming carer who put our minds at ease and explained everything clearly. The first impression and general feel of the place was that of warmth. My father was cared for impeccably by all staff members who cared for him like they were looking after their own dad. Amazing place."

"As a daily visitor with no set arrival/departure time, I have largely been warmly welcomed by nurses and carers. "Staff are friendly and committed, the standard of care is very high. The building is functional and well kept. Facilities are suitable and thought has clearly been involved in their planning. Although the building isn't an old, fancy mansion and there are clearly budgetary constraints on what can be achieved at this facility. Hard work and genuinely caring employees make Awel-y-Mor excellent value and a good quality of life. It is possible to pay a lot more elsewhere but it would be hard to get more than is on offer here. More work could be done on diet plans for residents."

"I cannot praise the staff, in its entirety, for the care and support they've offered my husband since he became a resident in Awel-y-Mor in December 2017. Nothing is too much trouble and, in fact, the staff go out of their way to do their very best for him. This includes accompanying him to London for a charity event, sorting out an afternoon's respite in a care home in Twickenham, to ensure he was as safe and comfortable as possible. I have, in fact, recommended Awel-y-Mor to a friend whose Father is now a resident here. Thank you to you all for everything."

"My brother has been a resident for 2 years. During that time, he has been well cared for. The staff are very kind, friendly, some are exceptional. They bother to get to know the person in their care and accommodate their needs/interests and build confidence. The activities team organise events and take residents out as much as they are able - from rugby to theatre to picnics, meals etc. The home occasionally has "restaurant evenings" where families join the residents for a lovely meal and entertainment. Overall, he is well cared for and I don't worry that he is safe."

"My brother has been in Awel-y-Mor Care Centre for about 4 years. His main carer (our mother) passed away in 2011, but he had been in other care establishments prior to arriving in Gorseinon. With Down syndrome and unable to communicate, he went through a harrowing grieving period. He needed good nursing care, which he has always received in Awel-y-Mor. My sister and I have been very pleased with the overall care. The staff are friendly every time I visit."

"We as a family have had an excellent experience here. The management and carers are professional, knowledgably and very caring to residents and visitors alike. The facilities and activities are excellent, plentiful and well run and there are many communal areas to suit individual needs. A care home is never going to be quite like a private home (living in your own home) but I'd say this is as close as it gets."
