Activities at Awel-Y-Mor Care Home

Residents enjoyed a visit from the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, who had a chat with all of our residents and enjoyed a cup of tea and cake. The residents were very impressed to hear about all the charity work that the sheriff had undertaken recently, which included a critical bleed control kit initiative to roll out kits within West Glamorgan working with Heart Beat Trust UK. 

Our sensory therapist, Jayne, was happy to be invited to the sheriff's award ceremony on the 8th March to receive an award.

Residents enjoyed having their picture taken with the high sheriff after having tea and cake.

Residents have enjoyed some recent trips out bowling to tenpin in Swansea Parc Tawe. 

Residents have commented on what an enjoyable morning they've had. We have been visiting at around 10am in the morning when it’s been a bit quieter, and the residents have really loved a bit of fun competition. 

One of our residents, at 80 years old, said she had never been bowling before, so this was her first time at a bowling alley, and she said she had a wonderful time. Another resident said he used to go bowling when he was younger, so it brought back some great memories for him. 

It was wonderful to see residents have such a lovely fun time.

Residents enjoyed a wonderful afternoon where we had Pauline Kaytanua Wood come in to do a tribute as Freddie Mercury. 

The three favourite songs that everyone enjoyed were Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are The Champions and Don’t Stop Me Now. 

A few residents knew all of the words so had a go at having a sing-a-long on the microphone, and one resident had fun waving the Welsh flag to one of the songs!

Residents enjoyed a lovely pottery afternoon where we had a lady who specialises in pottery come in to visit us. We enjoyed making Christmas decorations such as stars, angels and snowmen!

One resident enjoyed using fabrics to create patterns on the pottery and another resident enjoyed making a Christmas gonk to add to his collection of pottery gonks.

Residents also enjoyed adding Christmas messages on their pottery and using stamps to add Christmas messages to. It was a lovely afternoon and residents are already looking forward to painting everything they have made.

Residents have enjoyed lots of trips out, one of our trips was to the Swansea waterfront museum which two of our residents really enjoyed. One resident said he found all of the miner’s facts fascinating and the vintage cars very interesting! Another resident particularly liked looking at the RNLI boats and trying on lots of the outfits and hats. We all enjoyed looking at lots of the old toys and seeing if the residents could remember any of them from when they were younger. Afterwards we enjoyed a lovely stroll along the waterfront looking at the boats and picking out our favourite.

We had a wonderful trip out to Rhossili beach. The weather was lovely but was little windy. The trip there was fun listening to music along the way and having a sing along.

We had a delicious lunch out and enjoyed fish and chips by the sea, one of the residents had the three bean veggie chilli which he said was delicious. The residents were very intrigued to see the hand gliders and really enjoyed watching them float through the air. One of the residents described the view as spectacular and was very impressed with the disabled access for wheelchairs.

We enjoyed going to see the very friendly horses roaming wild.

Everyone enjoyed an ice cream from the ice cream parlour where the residents chose their favourite flavours and toppings.

It was a lovely day and we are already planning our next trip back which our residents are very excited for.

We had such a lovely day for our Hawaiian themed day. In the morning residents enjoyed having their hair and nails done, and enjoyed having there makeup done trying lots of different bright shades of eyeshadows.

They enjoyed a delicious Hawaiian themed lunch and some amazing cocktails for our cocktail afternoon, with Pina coladas being the favourite!

We listened to some Hawaiian music and tried out some hula dancing which was lots of fun.

Residents staff and families all enjoyed a day of fundraising for Morgan’s army as it was Morgan’s heavenly 5th birthday.

Residents enjoyed looking through all of the crafty stalls and having a go at trying to win on the bottle stall. We had a visit from a fire engine and residents and staff enjoyed chatting to the fire men, and trying on their hats!

In the afternoon we had lots of lovely yummy cakes and a magician came along to entertain the residents. They were amazed at all of the card tricks and were given little souvenirs from the magician.

Residents, family and staff enjoyed cheering on the cyclists here at Awel Y Mor. We enjoyed decorating the outside areas with balloons and flags for the arrival of the cyclists. We had bikes out in the outside gazebo which residents got a little competitive seeing how many miles they could do. The cyclists enjoyed lunch here and we had a lovely ice cream afternoon with lots of different flavours, the strawberry cheesecake ice cream was the winner! A resident was very happy to win the tour de Barchester ‘guess the name of the dog competition’. The winning name was Lexi.
