Activities at Ashminster House Care Home

Activities at Ashminster are based on residents' life histories. We host music workshops and encourage participation in a number of other activities, including gentle exercise, bingo and gardening. Monthly live singers entertain everyone with music from the 50s, 60s and 70s and residents are encouraged to interact with the musical instruments. Sensory sessions with fibre optic lights and touch & feel blankets are provided, which can be calming to those living with dementia. Residents participate in cooking sessions and enjoy the aromas of bread, scones and cakes - and, of course, sampling the finished product over a cuppa! We promote family values at Ashminster, and those we support can enjoy reminiscing about family events in the past, including weddings and previous occupations.

Head of Lifestyle

I have worked at Ashminster House since 2003, first as a carer then progressing to activities coordinator, which has know as 'Head of Lifestyle'. I have a wealth of experience in my role, as well as NVQs in Health and Social Care, Activities in the Care Setting and Dementia.

I am passionate about fulfilling residents' lives by getting to know each individual with a person-centred approach, learning about their experiences and helping them to express themselves, such as through reminiscing with items of old.

My interests outside of work include antiques, dogs and spending time with my family.

Celebrating life at Ashminster House Care Home

Scrabble Club

Scrabble Club

In Ashminster House, we had our residents gather for our weekly Scrabble Club, where the theme is witty wordplay and having wonderful company!

While four of our residents played the game, it didn’t stop others from offering ideas for words and aiming to help their friends get the highest score!

Panto time

Panto time

It's behind you and lots of fun in Ashminster's pantomime Cinderella.

Residents, families and friends from the community enjoyed this year's performance. Warm and spicy mulled wine was served along with a traditional buffet.

Flower arranging

Flower arranging

The ladies at Ashminster house showed their creative side in a flower arranging session.

Residents cut greenery from the garden as a base, then built up the colours of there choice to make there creation.

The roses went down very well. This activity has inspired the residents to make their own Christmas wreath in December.

Shopping for our garden

Shopping for our garden

An afternoon visit to Dobbie’s Garden Centre was about residents making choices of plants and colours for the garden.

Pat is a very keen gardener and has an eye for beautiful colours. Pansies, ivy, and autumn colours were Pat’s choice.

One of our residents suggested a singing bird box to listen to in our relaxing sensory sessions.

Book club on 1970s comic books

Book club on 1970s comic books

Book club this month went right back to the 1970s.

Mandy, Jackie and Bunty books were read out loud, which brought back many memories. One of our ladies expressed to the group she always brought a Jackie album every Christmas for her daughter.

Snow White at Marlowe Theatre

Snow White at Marlowe Theatre

Oh yes we did! Our residents had a wonderful time enjoying the pantomime of Snow White and the Seven Drawfs at Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury!

There was lots of laughter, singing along, and smiles all round, leading to a truly magical day out that brought back so many happy memories for everyone.

Christmas carol time

Christmas carol time

There’s nothing more jolly than singing carols from a good old-fashioned piano. Emelia from the community led the residents to a carol singing in the afternoon.

Singing brings out the best voices this time of year. The residents requested silent night, we three kings and noel.

Memories of keeping fish

Memories of keeping fish

One of our residents is a keen fisherman and has spent most of his life relaxing around a fishing pond. On a trip to the garden centre he found the fish area very relaxing and therapeutic.

He now has a job where he feeds the fish at the home twice a week.

Seasonal wreath making

Seasonal wreath making

In a recent residents meeting our ladies expressed bringing Autumn colours inside the home. Our ladies got very creative and used their skills, colours and imagination well in the making of our Autumn wreath.

This activity has inspired our residents to make another one for the local community church.

Italian Day

Italian Day

In our monthly meeting, residents requested a fun Italian day. The home was decorated with flags, and pictures of historical land marks.

One of our residents demonstrated a pizza making activity where they invited our chef to come along. In the afternoon we watched a virtual tour of Rome, with a glass of Italian red wine.

Pudding Club

Pudding Club

Pudding Club was in full swing over at Ashminster House this month!

The residents gathered together to enjoy a fantastic selection of delicious sweet treats, having big smiles and sharing their dessert delights with their friends within the care home, which was certainly the perfect recipe for a happy afternoon!

Mince pie making

Mince pie making

Here at Ashminster House, it's so important for our residents to continue to make and bake.

This time of year, the traditional mince pie making gets very competitive. Residents made their own pastry but requested to support the local supermarket for the mincemeat.

Meeting friends in the community

Meeting friends in the community

Every Monday, residents look forward to meeting friends in the community for coffee, cake and catch-up.

There are a lot of conversations about politics, knitting, sewing and sharing memories of life at secondary school.
Many of our community friends visit on a Saturday for a knitting club.

Memories of hop picking in Kent

Memories of hop picking in Kent

One of Ashminster residents was brought up on a hop farm in canterbury. He shared memories of good times running through the hop fields as a lad.

The smell of the hops shed a tear for Cyril, however he expressed they were tears of happiness.

Getting close to nature at Singleton Lake

Getting close to nature at Singleton Lake

Residents visited Singleton lake for bird watching and getting closer to nature.

A kingfisher was spotted along with moorhens, dragon flies and a bird of prey. The excitement got even better when they watched a member of the community catch a mirrored crap.
