At Thackeray House Care Home, we provide first-class 24-hour nursing care and palliative care for older people as well as offering the opportunity for short-term respite stays, perhaps for convalescence after an operation or to give a family member a break from caring for a loved one

Our nursing home is a small, purpose-built residential care home in Croydon, set in compact but beautifully maintained gardens, with excellent transport links to London and surrounding areas via train, bus and tram. There is a pleasant conservatory overlooking the rear garden and the home is a short walk from Croydon centre.

Personal profiles drawn up with the person concerned and relatives, provide the basis for individualised elderly care, treatment and support. They ensure that Thackeray House tailors activities, diet and medical care to particular needs.

Thackeray House welcomes visitors – we like people to drop into see what we can provide.

The team who work at Thackeray House demonstrate on a daily basis commitment to residents and their aim to provide consistent, high quality care, alongside, excellent hospitality, activities, administration and maintenance services. On admission, the Maintenance Manager will be available to assist newcomers in personalising rooms by placing furniture in chosen areas and hanging pictures. The Activities Coordinator will spend time learning about interests and hobbies, which we aim to integrate into the weekly activity programmes. The administration team will assist residents and families with any queries, and the housekeeping team ensure that clothes are all laundered well and rooms are kept clean and tidy. Shirley Spencer

General Manager

I am very proud to say I have been in the nursing profession for an excess of 40 years and have had roles and experience in education, management and clinical roles.

When I was considering moving into the care business 5 years ago, I looked for an organisation that would share my passion and personal ethos, alongside supporting me to consistently deliver high quality care to the older adult and Barchester Healthcare was my organisation of choice.

As the home manager, no two days are alike, which is both motivating and very gratifying and I have the honour of leading and managing an excellent and caring team at Thackeray House.

As the team leader, I promote that all the team members, identify each residents individualised needs and work in collaboration with residents, relatives and other professionals to meet these needs.

I promote the team’s professional development by providing them with opportunities to further their careers. I also encourage open and honest communication with all staff, residents, relatives and visitors and have adopted an open door policy for all.

Thackeray House is a community, and has become well known locally, for being a friendly and happy place to be. We have regular events which are well attended by residents, existing and previous relatives and visitors to the home, where everyone is served great food, renews old friendships and have a really good time, so much so, many return every year.
I am very proud of the team at Thackeray House, who consistently go the extra mile in making the residents and relative experience of living here, a satisfying and enjoyable experience on a day to day basis.

Our care

The Thackeray House nursing and care team provide individualised, person-centred care for older people who are unable to remain at home or who require experienced end of life support. Each individual is assessed prior to admission to ensure the team have the skills and knowledge to meet specific care needs. Residents and families' comments or suggestions are encouraged during the development of proposed care plans and at regular reviews. This enables the team to plan and implement our services based on the individual requirements of each resident, and maintaining a high level of independence is always something that we strive towards. In our latest CQC inspection, 'Care' was rated as ‘Good,’ and for the past two years, we have won a placing in the ‘Top Twenty London Homes’ on carehome.co.uk.
