Meet our Activities Coordinator, Marilyn Knight
There is always a wide variety of different activities going on that are tailored to suit the interests of residents. One-to-one activities are a focus here at Red Oaks as well; it is important that everyone has individual time with a member of our team to do something they love doing.
Activities at Red Oaks
We believe in making a difference to the lives of people living here with us and ensure that we provide a lifestyle full of choice and stimulation that is centred around each resident here at Red Oaks. This includes a whole host of varied activities, together with regular trips out around the region, taking full advantage of the home’s minibus. Our aim is to enable each person we support to continue to do the things they enjoy for as long as they possibly can.
Life at Red Oaks Care Home
Easter Cake Competition
Every Easter, Barchester runs an Easter Cake Competition that homes can participate in. Our 2018 entry was created by Glenda Williams, one of our Kitchen Assistants, who is very talented at making creative cakes.
Nutrition & Hydration Week
Red Oaks has devised an exciting, challenging and fun week of activities, meetings and competitions. Every day at Red Oaks, we have had a special event with a nutrition and hydration theme.
Monday started the week off with a continental breakfast, Tuesday was 'Wacky Snacky' day with an enticing range of finger food in the morning; on Wednesday, residents made a range of different sandwiches for our tea party, where other residents enjoyed the fruits of their labour; Thursday was 'Thirsty Thursday', with a range of unusual drinks, and Friday was 'Fruity Friday', with a selection of fruits from around the world. The weekend continued the theme with 'Smoothie Saturday' and 'Sundae Sunday'.
Christmas Day is always fantastic at Red Oaks, with up to a hundred relatives visiting. We start the morning with Buck's Fizz and canapés and then, just before lunch, everyone gets their presents from Father Christmas.
The annual Christmas Party was a great success, with entertainment from Helen Bartlet – an old favourite – for our evening events. There was wine and cheese flowing and everyone was up on their feet dancing.
Christmas Cake Competition
Every year, Barchester care homes across the country take part in the Barchester Christmas Cake Competition. This year, we entered into two categories: 'Kitchen Staff' and ' Residents'. Four of the Kitchen staff members entered separately, and the residents did an amazing job of decorating their own entry. Glenda Williams, one of our Kitchen staff, actually won the competition with her creation.
Christmas Jumper Day
All residents and staff at Red Oaks have been encouraged to buy, borrow or decorate their own special Christmas jumpers and donate £1 to Save the Children. In total, over £160 was raised for charity. Some of the residents have gotten very creative and decorated their own glitzy knitwear with tinsel, stars, baubles and snowflakes.
