Activities at Queens Manor Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Shannon Cullen

Senior Head of Lifestyle

Hi, my name is Shannon and I am Head of Lifestyle and Enrichment here at Queens Manor. I have come to Queens Manor with 6 years of experience in the planning, activities and events sector.

I ensure that myself and the team get to  know each resident's preferences so that we can deliver a person-centred programme of events and activities within the home -  Including activities that positively impact physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. I strongly believe that creating great moments and memories for our residents and embracing their individuality with tailor made activities is the way forward.

In an era of developing technologies, we are using new ways of reaching out to family and friends - though Zoom, Skype and Facebook Portal. We hope that our residents never feel alone or too far away from their loved ones this way.   Each day I like to ensure that our residents enjoy themselves in a calm, stimulating and fun environment, whilst creating bonds with each other and staff.

Our Therapet Family Comes For a Safe Distance Visit

Whilst we might not be able to enjoy our usual cuddles it was amazing to see our friends Hermit the tortoise and Malcolm the dachshund from a safe distance today. Angela and Harry, our therapet family, brought them along with a delivery of cupcakes for the staff and lots of good wishes. We have missed you so much and cannot wait to see your properly again. Thank you for our yummy cakes!

Letters from Trinity Primary

We were overwhelmed to receive letters and chocolate Easter eggs from Trinity Primary PSA this Easter. Residents enjoyed learning about the lives of the different pupils and reading all their lovely stories and good wishes.   In these unprecedented times, ensuring we feel engaged and connected within our local community is more important than ever and acts of kindness go a long way. We’re very grateful to teacher, Aimi Armstrong and her pupils at Trinity Primary for thinking of us and taking the time to reach out, you brought a lot of warmth and cheer to our home.

Somewhere over the rainbow!

Our resident Myra has been busy making a beautiful rainbow to display from our window here at Queens Manor.

The idea is that members of community display rainbows in their windows so that children can go ‘rainbow spotting’ when out for their exercise with family.  The colourful displays are brightening up everyone’s day!   The Facebook group has over 90,000 members and the home is delighted to be part of the community spirit.

Easter Egg Donation to Local Food Bank

We have been rallying together to show support for our community this Easter, donating chocolate Easter eggs and encouraging others to do the same in order to support our local food bank, ‘Edinburgh Food Project’ in helping make sure children receive an Easter Egg this year.

Our lovely lifestyle coordinator Gillian has collected Easter eggs for children in the past and when she told us about it our residents became very eager to help in the same way. At Queens Manor we love giving back to our community in any way we can and we’re very grateful to everyone who helped us collect so many Easter eggs for children who may have otherwise gone without.

Resident delighted with ‘honorary’ role

Queens Manor resident Doris is delighted to be appointed honorary ‘Lifestyle Assistant’ here at our home and promptly signed her new contract with glee! We regularly hold events and activities for our residents and surrounding neighbours and Doris is keen to support our Lifestyle Coordinators, Suzy & Gillian in the planning and promotion.

Doris is enthusiastic about keeping fit and now holds her own exercise class so she can share her tips with her friends and fellow residents and encourage others to stay active. Another part of Doris’s role will be to meet our new residents and she is looking forward to playing a vital role in helping people settle in to their new home
