Activities at Queens Manor Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Shannon Cullen

Senior Head of Lifestyle

Hi, my name is Shannon and I am Head of Lifestyle and Enrichment here at Queens Manor. I have come to Queens Manor with 6 years of experience in the planning, activities and events sector.

I ensure that myself and the team get to  know each resident's preferences so that we can deliver a person-centred programme of events and activities within the home -  Including activities that positively impact physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. I strongly believe that creating great moments and memories for our residents and embracing their individuality with tailor made activities is the way forward.

In an era of developing technologies, we are using new ways of reaching out to family and friends - though Zoom, Skype and Facebook Portal. We hope that our residents never feel alone or too far away from their loved ones this way.   Each day I like to ensure that our residents enjoy themselves in a calm, stimulating and fun environment, whilst creating bonds with each other and staff.

Residents create festive floral displays

Queens Manor residents got in the Christmas spirit by coming together to create their colourful floral table decorations for everyone to enjoy as the home counted down to Christmas before enjoying a fresh cup of tea and a delicious slice of home-made cake.  Flower arranging and showing their creative sides is just one of the popular activities planned as part of the homes life enrichment programme.

Residents enjoy Christmas party

Barchester’s Queens Manor celebrated their Christmas countdown by hosting a Christmas party where everyone was treated to delicious festive party treats and presents.

The Christmas party was in full swing with a festive 5-courses of traditional fayre being served as festive music played throughout the day.

General Manager, Sharon McGowan said: “After such a difficult year it was great to see all the residents just having fun. Everyone celebrated together with dinner, drinks and dancing all evening”

Birthday Celebrations

Staff and residents at Queens Manor celebrated a double birthday for two of our lovely residents, Cathy and Margaret, on 21st December.

Cathy did not stop smiling all day, especially when given her present. The afternoon continued with songs from Michael Buble, Cathy’s favourite. Chef Duncan and Fabi were busy baking two spectacular cakes.

St Andrews Day celebrations

The residents at Queens Manor in Edinburgh enjoyed a celebration of Scottish culture and fare to mark St Andrew’s Day on Monday 30th November.

In honour of Jesus’ first disciple who promoted kindness and is laid to rest in Edinburgh, head chef baked traditional Scottish foods including haggis, neeps and tatties, shortbread, cranachan and apple and bramble pie accompanied by a wee dram for everyone to enjoy.

In the afternoon some of the residents took part in an ‘Ultimate Scottish Quiz’ where things got very competitive and throughout the day was spent listening and dancing to traditional Scottish music.

Residents remember the fallen

Barchester Queens Manor in Edinburgh commemorated the signing of the Armistice Day agreement on the day that the guns finally fell silent.  They joined the rest of the United Kingdom in holding a two-minute silence at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day, of the eleventh month.

As well as marking Armistice Day by wearing poppies and watching the televised service from Westminster Abbey in honour of The Unknown Soldier, residents took part in therapeutic activities including poppy flower arranging and a poppy window display.

Birthday surprise for Resident

Queens Manor Care home celebrated resident, Martin’s birthday a former Piper with Police Service in style!   Martin, had a fantastic day celebrating with all his friends at Queens Manor, he was overwhelmed with emotion when he was gifted a Scottish Bagpipe CD from his friends and staff at the home.

Chef Fabi, also baked him the most fabulous chocolate and strawberry cake and this was enjoyed by all.

He thought Gillian (Lifestyle Coordinator) and Sharon’s (General Manager) attempt to highland dancing was the cherry on top of the cake. Martin says ‘I really enjoyed my day, thank you everyone!’

Overall a very special day having had a surprise visit with his sons at the visiting lounge & a skype call with his daughter in Canada.
