What our families say on carehome.co.uk

"My mum, who had advanced dementia, spent her last month at Hugh Myddelton after leaving the hospital after a fall. The care she received was wonderful. It was a fairly confusing time for all of our family and the discharge from the hospital felt pretty disorganized. However, the staff were amazing in making sure that everything was in place for her arrival and helped to settle her in very well. Everyone was friendly, respectful, and caring - Mum was made comfortable and I could see that she felt relaxed, even though she was not able to talk. After the fall her medical needs were much greater and were completely catered for. I would like to say a special thank you to the unit leader, who took the time to talk with me when Mum first arrived. On the morning that Mum died, everyone was so kind and gave me space to just sit and pray. Thank you."

"The nurses are fantastic, they go above and beyond to care for their residents. They celebrate special occasions for the residents, like decorating the dining room for Valentine's Day. Everyone is friendly and approachable. I have witnessed nurses first hand getting antibiotics delivered the same day for their patients even though the pharmacy they use doesn't offer this same-day delivery. They make it happen."

"My husband spent 5 months in the hospital and 1 month in the rehabilitation unit. He came here (Hugh Myddelton) in May 2023. At Hugh Myddelton House his needs are being met considering he is paralysed. I would recommend High Myddelton House for anyone who needs care, be it dementia or other illnesses."

"My 98-year-old mother-in-law with dementia needs 24-hour care after a series of falls. We are extremely pleased with the care she gets at Barchester Hugh Myddelton House Care Home. Staff have clearly got to know her as a person and centre her care around that, which is amazing. Mother-in-law is always very concerned about appearance and she is still extremely well turned out and even with varnished nails and a new hairstyle every time we see her. Hugh Myddelton House takes her to medical appointments too. I particularly appreciate the presence of nursing staff because caring with dementia is challenging and I think nursing staff bring a lot of expertise. I feel confident knowing Mother-in-law is being much better looked after than I could manage myself."

"My father is a current resident at the home and was discharged there from the hospital. Prior to deciding that a nursing home was the right place for him, my husband and I were shown around by two ladies, one of whom took the time to sit and discuss my dad's needs with me. They both provided me with reassurance, kindness and empathy for the big decision that we would be making. My dad had a fairly chaotic discharge from the hospital, however, the general manager and staff were amazing in making sure that everything was in place when he eventually arrived and helped to settle him (and me) when he did. I have nothing but praise and admiration for all of the staff. Everyone is friendly, respectful and obviously cares for the residents - they work hard and include the residents in activities or just chat with them. My dad’s nursing needs are completely catered for and any issues are seamlessly dealt with by the qualified staff there. I’m confident that this is the right place for him."

"My dad has been in Barchester Hugh Myddelton House Care Home for the last four and a half years and is very happy. My mum sadly was diagnosed with dementia earlier this year and is also now a resident. The care they receive is excellent and is a comfort to the family that they are being well cared for. Thank you to all the staff and the nurses."

"Posting this review after a short stay for my father. Very impressed with the entire care and support team for being so caring and professional in looking after my father who has high needs. His meds were administered precisely and his food and hydration levels were scrutinised with precision. Encouragement was given in eating and a high level of personal care and respect was given in a challenging service user. Very impressed overall given the challenging needs and short stay and would definitely use it again. Respect and courtesy was always evident."

"My husband came to Barchester Hugh Myddelton House Care Home after a stroke and brain haemorrhage for nursing care. I could not be more grateful to all of the staff for the outstanding care my husband has received since he came here. Everyone is so positive and empathetic and throughout this hard time they have taken care of our whole family, not just my husband. I have gotten to know many of the residents and their relatives and you quickly become part of the extended family. I know when I am not here that my husband is truly cared for as a person as well as a patient. A big thank you to everyone at Hugh Myddleton."

"My mother moved to Barchester Hugh Myddelton House Care Home in April from hospital and was there until she passed away in August. I was very impressed by all aspects of the home. It was very well run. It was a beautiful environment, lovely garden, little cafe area, good food and most importantly, kind and caring staff. It always felt calm and peaceful. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for nursing care."

"This two week stay at Hugh Myddelton for my mother shortly after a short hospital stay was an excellent experience, both for her, my sister and I. We were treated with professional and empathetic respect and dignity, and Mum was comfortable and always reassured us that the staff were lovely and she was content. This care centre is just the right size, large enough to have the professional staff, nurses and expertise, but small enough to give those who give here personal and lovely attention."

"Our father was happy, content and well cared for here. The wide range of activities on offer, connecting often with the outside world was stimulating and meant that our father slept less during the day. There were no smells here. The home was warm and very clean, and the front of house team was welcoming. The menu was very varied and enjoyed by our father. The carers did their job well, and the management team were always available to discuss any concerns (which were few). The link with the local GP was good, and she took the time to contact us on occasions. Our father was a resident during the pandemic, but he was able to have a designated visitor to his room so his family were able to visit most days, hugely appreciated. Some of the staff did over and above what was expected of them. The rooms are small, but we were able to accommodate a recliner from home. We feel confident to leave our father in the care of the Hugh Myddelton team. Thank you."

"All nurses, carers and management are very friendly and helpful. The facilities are excellent and always clean and tidy. My wife is treated with dignity and carers/nurses keep me well informed on all matters. Unable to really comment on the activities as my wife has until very recently been unable to take part in them, however, I would say the weekly schedule appears very well planned and appropriate."

"An exceptional nursing home, with caring and competent staff. Management is equally helpful and supportive. The quality of my father's life and health psychologically and physically has significantly improved since being at Hugh Myddelton House, despite his medical conditions. As a family, my sister and I have complete peace of mind in the knowledge that our father is in the best care. Thank you to all staff."

"Mum has been a Hugh Myddelton resident since March 2018. During these months of lockdown and the challenges, this in itself has presented to all of us, we as a family (my sister, my brother and I) are very happy with the care provided to our Mum. The nurses and care staff undertake their work in a professional, compassionate, kind and caring manner and always take time to explain to us how Mum is doing when we call/visit. Both the home administrator and admin assistant are welcoming and friendly on the phone. In particular, our experience of the activities co-ordinator is wonderful. She is doing a tremendous job in keeping our Mum active and stimulated, with a sense of fun too! This is clear to see from photos taken during the activities and from our garden/indoor visits when we see Mum. We are comforted to see Mum is content and settled when we Skype/visit. Everyone is working so hard to keep us all going. All in all, we can see how Mum is well cared for and looked after. Thank you."

"My mother has been at Hugh Myddleton House for over 9 years and the ground floor team (particularly the nursing team) look after her so well. She can be quite tricky but over the years, they have changed her drug routine for the better, have got her to get out of her bed and sit in a chair, she even walks around and chats to people now, which was something she hadn't done for years. Yes, it is expensive but my mother is safe, well cared for and content so I can't ask for anything else."

"I feel the staff require training regarding being organised, especially as papers went missing in my father's folder. Staff should not make stories when they don't know the answers as I had some confused answers contradicting themselves. Also, some of his clothing went missing. I expected more professional service after paying private service which was expensive."

"Since my mother entered care I have seen care quality delivery of the poorest standards at one care home; good delivery with occasional catastrophic negligence at another, and a standard way below those at Hugh Myddelton at her last nursing home. She has now been at Hugh Myddelton for as long as her combined time at 3 previous establishments and her care quality remains exemplary in comparison, where she is content in spite of her slowly advancing dementia."

"My mother has been in this home since 2004, she has received overall good care. I find the staff are friendly and always welcoming. My mother seems happy here. The rooms are clean and the food seems ok. My mother prefers mostly one to one activities and the activity co-coordinator really tries to meet her needs as she is still young and likes to do things that maybe the older generation doesn’t. Overall the home is good."

"Our experience for our mother can be described only as "excellent" and hence answers as below. Please do not underestimate this! Following a most distressing time at hospital (hospital were as good as could be) - One staff member, in particular, has been a breath of fresh air subsequently in all respects and not just in her recovery. I repeat, a deserved 10 out of 10 for below on all counts and a massive thank you."

"The home has been fantastic from our first point of contact. The manager had great empathy and understanding, immiediately making my Mother happy with the decision. On arrival, the senior nurse was very quickly ontop of my Father's requirements, despite his late arrival after a hospital discharge. Subsequently, another member of staff has been fantastic and provided a high degree of confidence within the medical nursing care. All carers genuinely live up to their name - Happy, professional and warm-natured. The home is immaculate and the quality of care is exactly as we wished."

"Overall the standard is good to very good, with a manager who works hard to maintain a high standard, as do the majority of the care staff who work very hard to complete the daily tasks. The dementia floor struggles to feed 19 residents with 4 care staff and 1 nurse and rely on help from other floors and managers. One to one for two residents is now helping the situation. The auxiliary staff are also helpful."

"I was extremely concerned when I was told that my mother was too immobile to be able to live in her own home again. I felt that she would never be happy elsewhere. All this concern has gone since my Mum moved into Hugh Myddelton House Care Centre. She is eating again and laughing again, the nurses and carers treat her with concern, dignity and love, I could ask for no more. The home feels truly like a home, and although we are real newcomers, we have been welcomed with open arms."

"Carers and staff are dedicated to their job, unfortunately, the care home are unable to retain carers on a long term basis and continuity trying to employ staff to those who leave. Many carers leave after gaining experience and certain qualifications and apply to join employment in "national health service" for "better terms" of employment."

"The home cared for my father from start on 7th July 2015 until has passing on Friday 12th August 2016. He was 102 and 10 months! He was in a poorly state on his arrival but if it wasn't for the excellent care and nursing he wouldn't have survived so long. All the staff loved my father, he was cared for, nursed and clean! Such a worry when you are leaving a loved one with strangers but we had total peace of mind with leaving him at Barchester Hugh Myddelton House. We can't thank them enough."

"Dad had reached the great age of 101 when after having spent a month in hospital, it was decided he needed 24-hour care, and what wonderful care he got. The staff at Barchester Hugh Myddelton House Care Centre are the most kind, caring and professional bunch of people. From the nursing staff to the cleaners. Ou minds were at peace knowing he was in the care of such dedicated staff. Dad has just passed away the dedication shown to him and us went above and beyond the call of duty."

"On Saturday 20th August, Barchester Hugh Myddelton House Care Centre organised a BBQ. In spite of rather changeable weather, the staff put up gazebos in the garden, the chef cooked chicken, salmon and sausages in a strong wind. The dining room was decorated and the cold buffet was laid there. Some residents went outside, but a lot (in wheelchairs) stayed in the dining room. Everyone seemed happy. After the meal, there was entertainment. All sections of the staff - from the management to carers and the entertainment staff worked so hard and made it a most enjoyable day."

"The home is always clean and tidy. Mum receives excellent care from all the staff. She always looks clean, well cared for and the clothes are always colour coordinated. The laundry service is excellent. There are always plenty of staff so I know she is always safe and always treated with dignity which is so very important."
