Activities at Fordmill Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Julia Constandache

Senior Activities Coordinator

I’m Julia and I have been working at Fordmill since December 2016. I really enjoy art and studied Graphic Design & Illustration in Dundee. I love being with people and using my skills to improve their quality of life and bring a smile to their faces through crafts, games and all sorts of other activities.

I plan out the activities, either for groups or individuals, according to specific needs and interests. It’s a real joy to get to know residents and their loved ones and I’m grateful to Barchester for giving me the opportunity to work with them and bring some sunshine into the residents’ lives.

TUKTUK ride for a Charity

Wow, Wow, Wow! Tilly & Tuker

This afternoon we welcomed this amazing family travelling around coastline of Scotland with the hope of raising money in aid of Ellen Macarthur Cancer Trust. They arrived at Fordmill in their wee tuktuks and they gave a life experience to some of our residents that were able to get on and have a ride around the town. Some of the staff and relatives enjoyed a ride too. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU, to every single staff member at Fordmill, residents, families and friends who donated for such an amazing cause.

Virtual Trip to Romania

Where are we going next time, our residents were all wondering after the last virtual flight to Japan. Well, today finally dawned and everyone was up, ready and raring to go on our flight to ROMANIA.  Doris couldn't wait to climb aboard, she asked if she could be first in line! Shirley very kindly checked everyone's passports before they entered the plane to make sure all was good. Once thorough their Passports and boarding passes tightly clasped, pilot Derek and his hostess Julia both dressed in traditional Romanian Garb, welcomed everyone aboard and ushered them to their first class window seats.

Hearts racing with anticipation of the imminent take off, the engines revved up to a screaming crescendo, and the plane sprung forward. Before we knew it, we were in the air doing a very steep climb up to the heavens.  Everyone hung onto their seats until the seatbelt light went off and in that moment, all the worried faces turned into a sea of brimming smiles. Our passengers indulged in some Romanian delights and some Romanian wine, while the pilot and the hostess entertained by dancing a traditional Romanian dance. Margaret couldn't believe how much fun it was and was still chatting about Romania at tea time.

Julia put on a wonderful display of traditional Romanian culture and Hazel spent ages just mesmerised by what she saw, she wanted to try on all the clothes! What an airline!

National Ice Cream Day

Residents across our homes had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event in celebration on National Ice Cream Day. Wall’s team took us on a great journey through history, sharing fascinating details about the brand since its launch in 1922. We learned about major innovations such as the introduction of Mr Whippy, Cornetto, Viennetta, Twister, and Carte d'Or.

Residents were treated to a sing-along to Cornetto classic ads, an interactive quiz about fun Wall’s facts and best-of-all, an ice-cream tasting session. It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our ice-cream lovers.

Administrator of the Year

Debbie Ferreira at Fordmill Nursing Home in Montrose has been crowned Administrator of the Year for the North Division in the Barchester Care Awards 2023 and is through to the national round of judging.

The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile for the benefit of the 13,000 residents living in Barchester’s 252 care homes and private hospitals across the country. Categories range from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Carer of the Year’ to ‘Dementia Care Champion’ and ‘Activities Coordinator of the Year’.

Dogs Trust

Residents across our homes had a fantastic time during a special live virtual event, led by Jennifer and Emily from Dogs Trust, the UK's largest dog welfare charity. Jennifer and Emily took us on a journey to discover the rich history of Dogs Trust and their facilities.

Using captivating video and photo footage, our residents were able to explore rehoming centres and learn more about the highest level of welfare offered there. It was a delightful experience for everyone, especially our dog lovers.

RAF Museum London

Across our services we had a lovely time joining Rhiannon Watkinson from the RAF Museum London for an interactive talk exploring the exciting and innovative aviation history of Hendon.

Our residents were able to learn about the first flights from the fields at Hendon, the creation of the London Aerodrome and Battle of Britain pilots who flew from RAF Hendon.

The talk also included photographic and film material from the Museum’s archive. Residents across our homes had a fantastic time and we truly enjoyed the virtual experience.
