Older adults must be safe on the road

As it is revealed that the number of drivers over the age of 90 on UK roads is set to increase by 18 per cent over the last five years, it is important that older adults take steps to ensure they are safe when driving.

Research by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) showed that by 2017 there will be an estimated 82,400 90-year-olds driving across the country, a rise of 12,400 from the current number of 70,000.

Those over the age of 80 on the road will also increase, rising 22 per cent from 1,049,058 to 1,283,000 by 2022.

IAM chief executive Simon Best said: "Today, over 10 million people can expect to reach 100 so the chances are they’ll be driven around by their 70 year-old children. While their frailty puts them at risk if they are in a crash, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are a risk to other drivers."

To ensure that older adults are safe when driving, it is important to take regular eye tests and buff up on the Highway Code.
