Northampton man with Parkinson's walks 56 km for charity

A man from Northampton has walked the distance of 56 km in a bid to raise money for a Parkinson's charity.

Andrew Anniwell from Rushden, who was diagnosed with the neurological condition four years ago at the age of 44, took part in the London to Brighton Walk on May 24th and 25th, a local publication reports.

He told the Northampton Herald and Post that, upon diagnosis, he was confused and upset, wanting to know why this had happened to him. 

"I didn't want to believe it at first but I dealt with it and gradually learnt to live with Parkinson's, and be more confident and open with friends and work colleagues," he said.

Mr Anniwell said taking part in this walk has helped to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson's UK, as well as given him the opportunity to keep fit and active. 

While he was hoping to complete the full 100 km of the walk, Mr Anniwell was forced to retire from the race at the 56 km mark, after he slipped and injured his thigh muscles, lower back and right shoulder. Nevertheless, he was very proud of his efforts, as were his family. 

He revealed he wants to do something like this annually to bolster the public's knowledge about the neurological condition, with a skydive being his next idea. 

Director of fundraising at Parkinson's UK Paul Jackson-Clark congratulated Andrew on his achievements and hoped those hearing about this story would be encouraged to participate in a similar event to raise awareness and funds.

"As the UK's Parkinson's support and research charity, we're leading the work to find a cure and we're closer than ever - but our work is dependent on donations."

It is thought 127,000 people have the neurological condition nationwide, with one person diagnosed with the disease every hour. Typical symptoms include tremors and reduced motor ability.
