Help older relatives de-clutter their house, expert says

The family and friends of older people who use assisted living should help them to eliminate any potential health hazards in their home, according to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Jo Bullock, of the organisation, warned that falls are the most prevalent type of accident resulting in death and injury among older people.

She explained that with the ageing population being encouraged to wait longer before they find a care home it is important to help older people prevent falls in their own home.

Ms Bullock advised older people: "Have a look around your environment to try and see the things that might cause you to have a fall. We would encourage older people's friends and family to help them in that task as well."

Age UK have called for older people to undergo frequent eye tests in order to prevent falls, with research showing that poor vision caused falls in 270,000 people over the age of 60 in the past two years.
