Activities at Oak Grange Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Life at Oak Grange Care Home

Remembering Buddy Holly

Oak Grange care home in Mollington was transformed into a 50’s diner to mark Buddy Holly Day on 3rd February.  Charles Hardin Holley, or Buddy Holly as he was better known, died tragically in a plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, aged just 22 along with fellow musicians, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson.  He was a pioneering singer-songwriter, hailed as one of the greats of 1950’s American rock & roll, despite his short career.

National Chocolate Day

Staff and residents at Barchester’s Oak Grange care home in Mollington had a fantastic time celebrating National Chocolate Cake Day on January 27th, surely one of the best days of the year!  Overseen by head chef Simon Burn’s, staff and residents whipped up a selection of different chocolate cakes from chocolate logs to cupcakes, chocolate fudge cake and even a Mississippi mud pie.  Once they had cooled, everyone got busy decorating with icing, butter cream and flowers to make some of the most fabulous cakes in town.

World Religion Day

Today the residents have been doing a religion quiz for World Religion Day and we found out lots of interesting facts about the different religions around the world.

We then did some reminiscing about our dear Queen Elizabeth thanks to The Royal London Mint, who have kindly borrowed us this great reminisce tool as we talked about our memories of the Queen and where they were on her Coronation.

Century plus 2 celebrations

Celebrations have been in full swing at Oak Grange, as one of its residents reaches her one hundred and second birthday in style.

Joan was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as she received a bouquet of flowers in recognition of her 102nd birthday. A champagne reception was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef Simon Burn’s.

Chinese New Year

The residents at Oak Grange have been making Chinese lanterns to decorate their home for Chinese New Year.  The Lunar New Year officially started yesterday and is one of the biggest holidays in Asia.   It’s a time for celebrating life, family, health, wealth and multigenerational traditions.  Each year in the Lunar calendar is represented by one of the 12 zodiac animals and this year will be the year of the rabbit symbolising longevity, peace and prosperity.

The residents enjoyed a Chinese meal prepared by our chef Simon Burns and they found out their zodiac signs and their meanings.

Virtual event with Royal Parks

Across our services our residents have enjoyed a wonderful live virtual talk about starlings, one of the UK’s most gregarious birds, hosted by Rachel Dowse from The Royal Parks London.

Rachel examined our long history with this bird and the importance of common species to our lives. Our residents had the opportunity to find out more about the great murmuration and why we need to pay special attention to these beauties before it's too late.

The virtual experience was truly enjoyed by all.
