Activities at Briardene Care Home

Briardene has a dedicated therapy team comprising of a Therapy Co-ordinator, Activities Organiser, Holistic Therapist and a Music Therapist. The therapy team have a fundamental role in delivering meaningful activities and therapies to this specific client group.

The team implement meaningful interventions with life enrichment to maintain and improve the whole of the wellbeing. This is supported with the use of a well-planned and sourced Activity life enrichment programme, full of choice and variety to suit the hobbies, likes, and interests of those that reside at Briardene.

The holistic therapist provides physical and mental health support to the clients ranging from lymphatic drainage and massage to Reiki, talking therapies and relaxation. This holistic treatment aids in maintaining physical wellbeing and offers great emotional support. The music therapy at Briardene encourages communication, positive interaction and further emotional support through the use of music.

The Therapy team promotes using non pharmacological interventions to calm, relax and enhance wellbeing in those with distress, reducing pain, promoting independence and recovery, and most of all to enjoy life to the best of their ability.

Our team pride themselves on having a non-judgmental approach that reflects cultural competency and sensitivity towards the unique needs and diverse experiences of others, with an approach to therapy that creates a safe and supportive environment where residents and their families can be seen and heard.

Claire Gibson, Dip HE Bsc (Hons) Psych and Couns is the Therapy Coordinator and the Head of Therapy Department, The Well Being Champion for the staff and The Dementia Champion for the residents at Briardene. The Therapy Team Claire leads consists of an Activities Organiser, Holistic Therapist and a Music Therapist. Claire supports and guides her team to provide meaningful and enriching interventions that have a positive impact on the residents Biopsychosocial wellbeing.

Her approach has very many different levels to it from those residents who can complete a task/occupation for start to finish with minimal support to another resident that may be involved in the group for emotional sensory support using feeling, tasting, smelling evoking memories. Claire’s ethos is everyone still has ability it’s how we unlock it to its full potential to have a positive impact on their life and their families. The families see the positive changes and often comment that they can’t believe the difference in their loved one.  Claire’s individual personality and professional approach inspires those around her showing how anything is possible in Dementia with the right approach for the individual resident. Claire has achieved many awards recognising her hard work and approach with those living with Complex Dementia care needs, these include 3 divisional awards for activities/therapies and 2 regional awards, 1 for activities and 1 for her Customer Care.

Julia Atherton, Director of Nursing & Dementia, presented the Registered Nurse of the Year award for 2023. All the nominees demonstrated outstanding ability as nurses and a genuine desire to improve the lives of the individuals they care for. The winner is Chris Winkley from Briardene Care Home. Barchester Care Awards 2023 - Divisional Winner!

We're so happy to announce that Chris Winkley has been crowned Registered Nurse of the Year and Wayne Mullow has been crowned Learner of the Year for the Hospitals and Complex Care Division in the Barchester Care Awards 2023 and are both through to the national round of judging.

The Barchester Care Awards celebrate the staff who go the extra mile for the benefit of the 13,000 residents living in Barchester’s 252 care homes and private hospitals across the country. Categories range from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Carer of the Year’ to ‘Dementia Care Champion’ and ‘Activities Coordinator of the Year’.
