Spanish mountain trek to raise money for Parkinson's research

A team of 25 experienced walkers has begun a four-day trek through Spanish mountains to raise money for a Parkinson's disease charity.

The team will raise at least £50,000 for Parkinson's UK on its trip, having raised over £70,000 in total last year.

Starting in Trevelez, the team will travel 50km across the Sierra Nevada, with all the proceeds going towards funding research into treatments and cures for the debilitating condition.

The charity's research liaison manager Dr Lubna Arif is taking part in the hike, and expressed her excitement at seeing the vast landscapes of the Spanish countryside.

She added: "This trek is a fantastic way of raising money for Parkinson's research and I'm really proud to be a part of the team.

"It feels great to be doing something that is so much fun but also so vital for Parkinson's UK."

The charity estimates that there are 120,000 people in the UK currently living with Parkinson's disease.
