Activities at Hafan-Y-Coed Care Home

We understand that the people we support have passions and interests that could be difficult to pursue after moving into a care home – but that doesn’t mean we don’t encourage them to try! Some hobbies can define a person, so our Activities Coordinators are dedicated to ensuring that everyone we support is able to do what makes them happy to the best of their abilities. Social events are organised with individual tastes in mind and with the idea that residents have the opportunity to try new and exciting things.

Rhosilli Bay

Our Garden trip centre trip was changed to a lovely day out instead. (We have to make the most of the Welsh Weather) Rhosilli Bay is a famous landmark beach and many residents would have spent many summers here as children or with their own children. The views are spectacular and they all had the opportunity to see the famous sunflowers. We passed many animals along the way and stopped to chat to passers by. A lovely afternoon of exercise, views and chatter!

Sports day fun

Hosting our Hafan Y Coed Sports Day was a chance for everyone to come together and reminisce about sports days over the years. Residents and staff had the opportunity to enjoy either watching or participating in traditional sporting games. The egg and spoon race, Obstacle race, relay, Archery, Skittles, the three legged race, the wheelbarrow race, tug of war and the sack race were just some of the fun games we enjoyed. Medals were given to all the children who took part along with hotdogs and ice-cream to finish off the day’s event.

Classic Car Show

What a fabulous event this turned out to be for our residents. After speaking to one of our residents, who is a car enthusiast, it sparked an idea to host our very own Classic Car Show to be held in the grounds of Hafan Y Coed.

Over ten different cars were on display for residents to view and to sit in if they wished. From the classic Mini to the Morris Minor, Many residents reminisced about the cars they had owned over the years. The weather stayed sunny for the afternoon, while chatting all things car related, sipping cocktails and eating the buffet prepared by staff.

Intergenerational Beach Day

We organised a memorable day for the residents this month as we embarked on an incredible beach adventure. Equipped with buckets, spades, paddling pools and sun cream, everyone embraced a day filled with intergenerational fun.

The activities team and other staff members were joined by Ysgol Y Strade and Serendipity nursery for a full day of beach activities. Everyone enjoyed the sea air and were treated to delicious fish and chips, followed by ice cream, while listening to music and soaking up the sun.

The experience left a lasting impression, with everyone finding it both relaxing and unforgettable.

Father's Day

Residents enjoyed this special day by us hosting a “Pie and A Pint” afternoon for all the gents in the home. Our ladies also attended this event. The sun was shining while we all enjoyed the entertainment and celebrations in the garden. A lovely day was had by all and the rain stayed away just in time for our singer to finish the performance. Families also attended to spend time with the special Father’s that live at Hafan Y Coed.

Bird of Prey Centre Dementia workshop

We were kindly invited to a Birds of Prey centre at the National Botanical Gardens of Wales, to take part in a Dementia friendly workshop.

Our residents had the opportunity to feed and hold an owl and then enjoy a live bird flight show in the grounds. Our residents had great fun going around the gardens on the golf buggies that were provided for us and we all enjoyed fish and chips on the way home. Joan said “I absolutely loved the day and loved the stuffed owl I brought home with me to put in my room”
