Barchester Care Awards National Winners 2023

Our Barchester Care Awards celebrate excellence in the quality of care we provide, by recognising those individuals and teams that make a difference to the lives of the residents and patients we support. 

There were over 3,975 nominations in 2023, with categories created to reflect the outstanding contribution in a whole variety of roles across the company, ranging from ‘Registered Nurse of the Year’ and ‘Foundation Champion’ to ‘Chef of the Year’ and 'Activities Coordinator of the Year'. 

The National Winners of the Barchester Care Awards were announced at a special awards ceremony on Wednesday 11th October. 

Activities Coordinator of the year

The Activities Coordinator of the Year award recognises the commitment of our staff in organising engaging lifestyle opportunities for residents and patients. Mandy Macara, Head of Marketing, presents the award for Activities Coordinator of the Year 2023 to Kimberley Bentley Colvert from Leeming Bar Grange Care Home. Congratulations!




Care Practitioner of the Year

Michael Beresford, Head of Learning Programmes, now presents the Care Practitioner of the Year award for 2023. This award celebrates the commitment, not only to the residents or patients, but also to junior members of staff to providing care and support. And the winner is Jo Vine from Kernow House Care Home. Congratulations!




Resident Ambassador

Next up is Sarah Lander-Scott, Head of Customer Experience, to present the Resident Ambassador of the Year award. This award gives recognition to our residents who share their views in support of the homes and act as the voice of those unable/unwilling to express themselves. The winner is Michael Taylor from Chalfont Lodge Care Home. Congratulations!




Health and Safety Champion

Health and Safety Champion of the Year award, presented by Paul Mason - Director of Health and Safety. This award recognises the outstanding contribution made by an individual in the pursuit of a positive safety culture through the provision of appropriate support and encouragement within Barchester. The winner of the Health and Safety award is Carl Marsden from Cheshire Grange Care Home. Congratulations!




Learner of the year

It’s now time for Learner of the Year award, presented by Gareth Williams, Director of Learning and Development. This award is for an individual who exhibits enthusiasm and commitment to their learning and on-going career development. And the award goes to Wayne Mulloy from Briardene Care Home. Congratulations!




Volunteer of the year

The next award is for the Volunteer of the Year presented by Laura Evans, Deputy General Counsel. This award will be presented to an individual who shows real passion and dedication by freely giving their time and energy at one of our homes or hospitals. The award for 2023 goes to Malcolm Jackson from Cherry Trees Care Home. Congratulations!




Garden of the year

The Garden of the Year award presented by Simon McCall, Commercial Director, who will present this award to the most impressive Barchester outside spaces. Judged on their use of colour, variety, safety and accessibility, maintenance and engagement. The winner of the Garden of the Year award is Mulberry Court Care Home. Congratulations!




Chef of the year

Next is the much-anticipated Chef of the Year award presented by Head of Hospitality – Davesh Kumar. Providing a choice of delicious, nutritious and beautifully presented meals is hard enough, but it’s even harder when you have to tailor your menus to meet residents’ / patients’ modified diets.
The decision was really difficult with the standard so high, the chefs in this category had to compete in a heated cook-off, and the winner of Chef of the Year 2023 is Melliel Angel Kho from Cherry Blossom Manor Care Home. Congratulations!




Maintenance Champion of the year

The next award is for the Maintenance Champion of the Year, presented by Neil Bowran, Head of Facilities Management. Our maintenance teams do a fantastic job in making sure our care homes and hospitals are consistently well presented and maintained to an exemplary standard. The Maintenance Champion of the Year 2023 award goes to Steven Hagan from North Park Care Home. Congratulations!




Home Administrator of the year

Fiona Sievwright, Head of Operational Finance, is up next to present the Home Administrator of the Year award. This celebrates the outstanding commitment of our administrative staff who provide a high level of support to the residents and their families. And the winner is Melanie Antcliff from Windermere Hospital. Congratulations!




Foundation Champion of the year

The Foundation Champion of the Year award is presented by Simon McCall, Commercial Director. This award recognises those who have done something special to contribute to Barchester’s Charitable Foundation either by fundraising or raising awareness. The Foundation Champion 2023 is Ride London / Essex 100 Team, consisting of Suzi Gibson, Wayne Hughes and Raj Boodhoo. Congratulations!




General Manager or Hospital Director of the year

It’s now time for the General Manager or Hospital Director of the Year award, presented by Dr Pete Calveley, CEO of Barchester. This Divisional Winners in this category were nominated by their Divisional Directors for showing outstanding commitment and leading their team to deliver high standards of care, whilst ensuring commercial and quality success for their home or hospital. This year’s deserving winner is Lynda Hamilton-Shaw - General Manager at Awel-Y-Mor Care Home. Congratulations!




Hospitality Champion of the year

The Hospitality Champion of the Year award is presented by Anna Shirley, Director of Customer Experience & Marketing. This award gives recognition to our hospitality staff who have provided the best quality of service and environment for residents and patients. The 2023 award goes to Gill Jones from Cheshire Grange Care Home. Congratulations!




Lifetime Achievement

Up next is the Lifetime Achievement award, presented by Mike O'Reilly, General Counsel and Director of Quality, Risk and Compliance. This award recognises individuals who have been part of the Barchester family for 15 years or more. The winner for Lifetime Achievement of the Year 2023 is Stephen Walls from Thistle Hill Care Home. Congratulations!




Registered Nurse of the year

Julia Atherton, Director of Nursing & Dementia, now presents the Registered Nurse of the Year award for 2023. All the nominees demonstrated outstanding ability as nurses and a genuine desire to improve the lives of the individuals they care for. The winner is Chris Winkley from Briardene Care Home. Congratulations!




Team of the year

The Team of the Year award is presented by Genevieve Glover, Chief People Officer. This award celebrates the outstanding contributions made by a team at a home or hospital to improve the quality of life of residents and patients. And the winning Team of the Year is Winchester House Care Home. Congratulations!




Carer of the year

It’s the last award of the afternoon, the Carer of the Year award, presented by Sue Sheath, Director of Regulation and Quality Improvement and Ross Joannides, Deputy Director of Nursing. This award recognises the vital role of the carer at Barchester Healthcare. Judges were looking for someone that provides the highest quality of care for the people they support. The winner of Barchester’s Carer of the Year 2023 award is Karen Whitney from Claremont Parkway Care Home. Congratulations!
