Activities at North Park Care Home

Our home is always full of life, and we can thank our wonderful Activities Coordinators for this. Dedication to creating a unique and interesting activities programme is what sets us apart from other homes. We always take into consideration that some people would prefer to pursue their own interests, which is why our team strive to incorporative activities that cater to a wide range of tastes and hobbies. Our trips out are always fun and exciting as well, and residents are guaranteed to return with stories to tell their loved ones!

Claire Liddy

Lead Activities Coordinator

Hi, my name is Claire, and I am Lead Activities Coordinator at North Park. I have 15 years’ experience in the role, three years at North Park and absolutely love my job. I like to involve the local community in events within the home, so we have connections with local churches, schools and community groups. We have a PAT dog that visits weekly, so our residents can enjoy pet therapy, and lots of external entertainers, who come into the home regularly as well; in addition to fairs, monthly coffee morning and so much more.

Paddling in the sea!

Residents Cathy and Shirley said they wished they could go to the seaside for a paddle in the sea one last time. Maureen said if they went, would they bring her some proper fish and chips back?

Staff at the home were delighted to be a part of making their wishes come true, as they knew how much it meant to them, and they all wanted to see the smile on Cathy, Shirley, and Maureen's faces when their wish was granted.

The activity team reached out to Beach Access North East-Hartlepool, who were more than happy to help and loaned them their beautiful beach wheelchairs. In total, five residents went to Seaton Carew, where staff pushed them down the beach, assisted them to paddle, and then poured them a glass of refreshing wine to drink while looking out to see the paddle borders and ships before heading back up for fish and chips to Maureen's delight.

RAF Hendon

Across our services we had a lovely time joining Rhiannon Watkinson from the RAF Museum London for an interactive talk exploring the exciting and innovative aviation history of Hendon.

Our residents were able to learn about the first flights from the fields at Hendon, the creation of the London Aerodrome and Battle of Britain pilots who flew from RAF Hendon.

The talk also included photographic and film material from the Museum’s archive. Residents across our homes had a fantastic time and we truly enjoyed the virtual experience.

'Beer' Happy!

You better beer-lieve that residents at North Park care centre in Darlington were more than hoppy to raise a glass, and sample some top Beers at The Steam Machine Brewing Co. in Newton Aycliffe to celebrate Beer Day Britain.

Beer Day Britain is held annually on June 15th to celebrate Britain’s amazing brewing scene and heritage. Several of our gentlemen beer lovers at North Park Care Centre expressed a desire to visit a brewery and Nick Smith from The Steam Machine Brewing Company was more than happy to oblige offering us a tour and set up a tasting and sampling session.

Medieval Garden Party for Spring Bank Holiday

North Park care centre, hosted a medieval garden party to celebrate Spring Bank Holiday and invitations were sent out to the local community.

Staff, residents and guests celebrated the occasion with traditional medieval foods such as mutton, an assortment of fried root vegetables, blood pudding, pork sausages and chops washed down with an abundance of ale and mead or milk for the younger ones. Staff preformed a courtly dance at the end of the meal before being locked in the stocks where instead of rotten fruit sponges soaked in ice cold water was thrown at them.

Pets at the Palaces

Residents across our services had a delightful time during a special virtual sensory storytelling event, led by Art Historian Jon Sleigh from the Historic Royal Palaces.

Jon took us on a journey to discover some of the more unusual and unexpected inhabitants of the palaces and the Tower of London, sharing fascinating stories about the pets at the palaces.

Whilst enjoying the virtual experience, our residents were treated to hot beverages, delicious biscuits, berries and cakes.  It was a truly lovely time for all.
