Activities at Cubbington Mill Care Home

Every day we run different activities throughout our home. The activities are designed and adapted to each individuals personal needs. The activities are designed to mentally and physically stimulate the people we care for and also to enhance their life skills and feelings of purpose and self-worth. The activities encourage interaction on a one to one basis, in small groups, in large groups and some are designed for the whole home including staff to be involved in.

We are registered with the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA) which ensures we are able to achieve and continually progress to enhance the quality of life for those we support in the home. We provide entertainers such as singers, musicians, magicians, puppeteers, poets and dancers. We also have regular exercise classes and arts and craft classes. Relatives and visitors will be able to see what me make in these classes on display around the home. We have regular trips out on the mini bus to visit garden centres, enjoy high tea, visit the butterfly farm and spend the day at the zoo with a picnic. We encourage the local community, schools, colleges and relatives to come and join us for activities, tea and cake and to visit to share their skills as much as possible.

Staff from across the home are always willing to help and share their knowledge and skills across a whole range of activities we have had everything from carers preforming Bollywood style dancing to cooking classes from the chef. We feel activities are a vital part of the residents lives to ensure they are stimulated mentally and entertained.

I'm very privileged to work with the wonderful people and residents at Barchester's Cubbington Mill and hope we all make some lovely memories together! I LOVE to find out about residents interests & hobbies through tools like the “Getting To Know Me Booklets”.

We are always open to new ideas. If you would like to get involved in any of our Life Enrichment activities or have a skill, or project you'd like to share with our residents, please click here to contact me direct. New entertainers and community links are always welcome.

Brilliant Bowls

On most Tuesday afternoons you can find Bowls National Champions Cheryl and John showing us all what for in a very friendly competitive game of ‘Bowls’ in the homes first floor area of the quiet lounge. We all take it in turns to roll the jack down the corridor, Charlie keeps her fingers crossed for the bias and straight-line rolls. Hazel, Gisela, Cheryl, Moira, Chris and Janet all won a game each! Bowls is a good excuse to all get together and reignite our old hobbies. In true championship style Cheryl insists on the ruler to be bought out if it’s too close to call the winner or we have a tie break throw.

International Women's Day

We celebrated this day earlier in in the week by watching a Barchester Live Event ‘Famous London Women in History’.

On Friday Activity Coordinator Rose and precious volunteer Glenda took a minibus full of lady residents to Marks and Spencer’s. After checking out the clothes we got snacks from the food hall and sprayed all the sample perfume there was on offer!

Queuing for our items and paying just in time to be back at home for a well deserved fish and chips!

Very fittingly we had a Bingo prize consisting of a £10off voucher to use with Debbie the Hairdresser in our homes salon, won by Pat! Well done Pat.

General Manager Laura Russell treated all the staff to chocolates and Activity Coordinator Rose decorating tables with fresh carnations and petals, delivering an extra special bar of chocolate to each lady resident in the home.

Pilgrim Puppets Performance

Residents Cheryl, Bob, Lily, Paddy, Pat, Hazel, Janet, Shirley and Moira enjoyed an afternoon of puppet play! The Pilgrim Puppet Group was started in Autumn 2006, by Sarah Sellars and Hazel Taylor. Their aim was — and still is — to take the Christian Message to as many folk as possible in a different way. Their puppets have been bought or “gifted” to them over the years. They come in many different shapes and sizes. From “people” characters, to animals and “cookie monsters”! They tell Bible stories and experiences in different ways. They try and do this with songs, interaction and fun. Over the years they have had 30 children who have been part of our group plus 10 adults, they have visited 38 different local Primary schools; 25 Care Homes; Rainbow-Guide Groups; Beaver Groups; Nurseries; Village Festivals, and many events, and celebrations. Some over 10 times! After the show residents explained how uplifting it was to be apart of something different.

Pancake Day

All the residents and staff had fun for this year’ Pancake day/Shrove Tuesday. 2nd Chef, Yvette Cronin, said: “My secret to the best pancakes is all in the whipping. Give it some elbow grease when mixing the batter and you’ll get perfect pancakes every time. I like experimenting with the fillings – the residents’ favourites are ‘’good old fashioned lemon and sugar!” Don told us all “I absolutely love pancake day, it takes me back to my childhood when my mother used to make us all pancakes and we’d all wait in turn for ours hoping the batter would stretch to another.  We’ve had so much fun reminiscing and sharing our favourite recipes for fillings.”

Cubbington MIll to the rescue!

Every Wednesday, Cubbington Mill care home in Leamington Spa opens its doors to local residents and neighbours to offer them a home-cooked meal in a bid to help tackle loneliness in their local community. The care home offers elderly people who might usually eat alone, the chance to join the residents and teams at the home on Wednesdays from 12:15pm for a hearty three course hot meal free of charge.  The initiative is called Don’t Dine Alone.

Local gent Norman, 94, has been coming along to Cubbington Mill every Wednesday for his midweek roast and a chance for a good old natter and a catch up and loving the opportunity until recently his driving licence was revoked and he could no longer get to the home.  Norman was devastated, as were the staff at the home!  When they heard of Norman’s plight, they couldn’t let his miss out!  Cue Activities Coordinator Rose Tucker and Customer Experience Champion, Laura Renalson, to the rescue!

Warwick Museum Guided Tour

Lily, Don, Chris & Henry along with Activity Coordinator Rose and Head House Keeper Julie had a fantastic time at the museum, where we were treated to a guided tour by Jackie, organised by Lucy. We all enjoyed looking around the museum artefacts learning about local history, before a coffee and piece of cake until it was time to come home again for lunch. At a residents meeting previously held in the home, residents expressed they would like to visit the local area and learn about Warwickshire’s heritage.
